When does Edge Technology kick-in on the Treo 650

According to the Cingular Customer "Scare" Representative I spoke to, he said that Edge Technology only kicks in when your tethering. He said the Media Works plan for unlimited usage is for GPRS service only.

In other words, the Treo 650 will only go into Edge mode when you’re using it as a modem.

Does that sound correct?

Nope. he is 100% totally and utterly wrong.

What a joke of a customer service rep. Ah well...they usually don't know **** anyway. I always seem to know more than 99% of the sales reps I talk to in stores.

So how does it work?

According to Cingular, MEdia Net is only available with GPRS devices. So when you have a GPRS/Edge Device, at what point and cause does GPRS stop and Edge kick-in (or vice verser).

There is no distinction, if there is edge in your area and the phone is E-GPRS it will be used.

The posters here are correct.
EDGE is simply a different encoding scheme for GPRS. *Most* of Cingular network is now EDGE enabled.

Try it for yourself, point blazer at www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest and see.

I get 150-200kbs out of mine.

:-D

So if I just switched to a 650 and had the media works before I switched, and they didn't say anythingn... Am I going to get Unlimited EDGE for 19.99?

Yes.

hey everyone,
so i chose the 19.99 media plan and have a 64k sim card.
My internet is really slow though and so I went back into the Cingular reseller and asked if they knew why.
He told me to upgrade to the 39.99 plan.
Well...
I told him I didnt think I had to, but i did. I am now waiting for the change to take place and will test in aabout 2 hours.

Is this true to get onto the EDGE network?
I read here that I should be able to using the 19.99 plan.
I also have an unlocked treo 650 if that helps.
Also, when I check my preferences it sais:
service: Cingular GPRS
Connection: GPRS

I don't see anything that says EDGE or blue network
thx

I've tried running the test at www.bandwidthtest.com/speedtest on a couple of devices: my Treo 650 on Cingular, and a friends Samsung i700 on Verizon.

In both cases 1MB is downloaded then the process stops with no feedback on what the results were.

I've tried it on my laptop connected via DSL and it works fine, but I'm getting no joy from running the test wirelessly.

Any ideas?
