I'm sure it has something to do with the way internet data is proccesed. If I understand it correctly, with the sidekick 2 you aren't connecting directly to the internet when you used the built in web browser, you're actually talking to the server at Danger HQ which processes the internet data and then sends it to your phone. So if you were to use the SK2 as a modem it would be going through that server and then to the web, also there's the fact tht there is no way to connect the sk2 to your comp, unless there is some way through the developer unlocked USB port.

now this is just how I think it works, I could be very, very wrong.

Without going into a lot of gruesome detail that's not interesting at 7am, you're very correct. The backend servers that the hiptop connect to do a LOT of customized processing for the hiptop that would make using the same proxies for a PC useless. It's not a "standard" network connection by a long shot.

That, and the fact is that the hardware of the hiptop isn't designed to do this. The USB port is not for general purpose I/O, its not tied to the right places in the hardware.

gonna be expensive

why would you want it as a modem when the skII has internet capabilites? with the exception of flash and javascript. html rocks. the only function i know where a phone can be used as a modem is a bluetooth enabled laptop and cell phone. but y? its slow. o well.

it would be much easy to make as network modem if it come with bluetooth. Unless, T-Mobile would lock it. Same thing on Treo 650, that wouldn't allow to have PAN.
