A HowTo on tones, wallpaper for SoHo

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

OK, some how to for the SoHo!

Firstly, and this is a personal opinion based on experience, BitPim sucks. It's such a tempermental program. Sometimes it will go days reading a phone and most times it will go even longer never reading it.

The best software for Kyocera to view your phone's file system and delete/add ringtones/wallpapers/screensavers/callerIDs is QPST (Qualcomm Phone Service Tools). It has the EFS Explorer. This is the tool in QPST that shows your phone's file system and allows you to add/delete.

Wallpapers: Must be saved as .png - I'm sure others may work but I'm sticking to what's original to the phone. They must be 128x98 (pixels). They must be at 24 BPP color.

The best program, and less complicated one, to use is IrfanView. Get it here.

Install it and run it.
Go to FILE, OPEN... and choose the picture file you want as a wallpaper.

Go to IMAGE and then INCREASE COLOR DEPTH... - Note that if Increase Color Depth is grayed out, it's already increased and you can skip this step.

Now go to IMAGE and then RESIZE/RESAMPLE... - when the RESIZE/RESAMPLE edit box opens, click the radio button for 'Set New Size'. Then next to 'Units' click the radio button for 'pixels'. Then at Width, change it to 128 and at Height, change it to 98. At the bottom where it says DPI, if there's a number there, delete it and leave it blank. Then click OK at the very bottom.

Go to FILE and SAVE AS...
At the bottom, choose a file name if you're renaming it or leave it alone if you're using the original file name. Then under there in the Save As Type: pull down, change it to: PNG - Portable Network Graphics

Then click save!

It's done. Upload it to your phone (more on uploading files to your phone below).

Caller IDs: Setting a little picture that shows when its assigned to someone in your contact list when they call. It's the same as wallpapers except change the sizing to Width 85 and Height 55. These will be saved however in a different place than the wallpapers. Refer to below for saving.

Ringtones: Well, unfortunately, I haven't been able to get real mp3's to work on this phone, even after making them at 24 KBPS, 16 kHz and mono and chopping them down in filesize and renaming them to a .mid extension as would work on the Kyocera Slider. Maybe some of you could figure this out and let us know. Therefore, I'm using midi files.

OK, now for uploading your new wallpapers, ringtones and caller IDs to your SoHo using QPST as referenced above. This is of course assuming you already have the data cable and installed its drivers...

Get and install QPST.

Plug your cable into your SoHo.

Go to your Windows START, then to QPST and choose EFS Explorer.

EFS Explorer will open up and then will eventually show your phone in its Phone Selection panel. Click on that phone and then click on OK. It will begin reading your phone's file system.

Once it's finished reading the filesystem, look in the left panel. Click once on the + sign next to BREW. This opens your brew folder tree and shows all the folders under the brew folder. Next click on the + sign next to MEDIA.

Now for uploading Wallpapers:
Next click the + sign next to IMG. Next click once to highlight on the actual folder called WALLPAPER. In the right hand panel you will see a folder called DEFAULT. Now, in this right hand panel, you will right click in white space (NOT on the DEFAULT folder) and choose NEW and then FILE. Browse for your wallpaper file, choose it, then click OK at the bottom and it will transfer the wallpaper image to your phone. When it's done, you should see it listed under the DEFAULT folder in the right hand panel.

To make sure, pick up your phone, go to MENU then to MEDIA GALLERY then to IMAGES then to WALLPAPERS and your file should be in there. Select it and save it as your default. Now it's your phone's wallpaper.

Now for uploading ringtones:
Having already gone into BREW and into MEDIA, click the + next to SND.

Next click once to highlight on the actual folder called RINGER. In the right hand panel you will see a folder called DEFAULT. Now, in this right hand panel, you will right click in white space (NOT on the DEFAULT folder) and choose NEW and then FILE. Browse for your midi ringtone file, choose it, then click OK at the bottom and it will transfer the midi ringtone to your phone. When it's done, you should see it listed under the DEFAULT folder in the right hand panel.

To make sure, pick up your phone, go to MENU then to SETTINGS then to SOUNDS then to RINGER TYPE and your file should be in there. Select it and save it as your default. Now it's your phone's general ringer. You can also assign ringers specific to personal calls, business calls, and to people in your contacts list.

Now for uploading caller ID pics:
Next click the + sign next to IMG. Next click the + sign next to SAVEDIMG. Next click once to highlight on the actual folder called DEFAULT (this is still in the left hand panel). In the right hand panel you will see several .gif files but .png works too and take sup much less space. Now, in this right hand panel, you will right click in white space and choose NEW and then FILE. Browse for your caller ID image file, choose it, then click OK at the bottom and it will transfer the wallpaper image to your phone. When it's done, you should see it listed in the right hand panel.

To make sure, pick up your phone, go to MENU then to MEDIA GALLERY then to IMAGES then to SAVED IMAGES and your file should be in there.

To assign a caller ID image to someone in your contacts list, go to the contact under CONTACTS, choose options and then ASSIGN PICTURE.

Hope this has helped some of you. Remember that if you figure out how to get mp3's working on the SoHo, post it here so we can all enjoy it!

ok, I downloaded QPST and anytime I open up the explorer, it asks me for my phones service programing code? how do I find this out?? Please help asap.. Thanks

Posted by: DamnCellPhone!

try six 0's or six 1's... that's a general SPC. Otherwise, if that doesn't work, you'll have to get it from your cell service provider.

Posted by: walsh8

will they tell me that, if I call my provider to get the service code for my soho? wont they know what I'm up too or something?? Sorry for all the questions, I'm new to all of this, thanks!

Posted by: DamnCellPhone!

try the six 0's and if that doesn't work, try six 1's - do this before considering finding out from your service provider.

Who is your service provider anyway? I may be able to find out for sure what the SPC is.

Posted by: walsh8

The 1's and 0's didnt work.. I've tried everything I can think of.. my provider is us cellular

Posted by: walsh8

Should I consider calling my provider??

Posted by: bitesalljerks

If you haven't already, try this: 1,2,3,4,5,6.

You can call your provider and ask them for the code and it shouldn't make a difference to them. Generally our codes are the six 0's or the six 1's, now and again we get the 1-6 code.

Posted by: walsh8

ok so the 123456 dont work either for my service code.. so I called US Cellular, and she told me that they couldnt give me that code because " my phone dont support the downloading of ringtones " bulls*** it dont.!! I have the phone desktop software, and it works just fine... Us Cellular wants me to signup for easy edge to get ringtones.. any suggestions anyone??

Posted by: abuthemagician

I went into my dealer and had them change it to all 0's. They weren't very conviced i needed this, but they did it anyway. Just tell them you might be selling it to a verizon user and when they say verizon won't activate the phone cuz it says Us Cellular on it tell them it can be done over the phone. In any event i just waited until it was only women working (i know they are all fairly new) and told them they are not allowed to give out the MSL but they can reset it to all 0's. It will be reset to the original if you update the roaming list.

When I was looking around in the phone for anything related to Tetris, all I could find was tetris.mid

So .bar files is where it's at, eh? But there's lots of .bar files in there.. how do you know which ones you need?

Posted by: abuthemagician

if you have tetris on the phone, it's burried in the brew folder (i think). if it is listed in your games menu, i want all the files that have kwc in the filename. you can send them to abuthemagician@gmail.com

Here is what i got from Kyocera about using the SoHo as a modem:

It said you can get the driver on the web site. You'll need to figure out the model number of the USB data cable you have tho to figure out which driver you need.

As for the modem file, looks like you have to get that off of a disk - according to their instructions anyway.

Regarding Tetris, I've checked every folder found on my phone, including Brew and it's sub folders.. nothing in this phone's file system/folders says Tetris except for tetris.mid . There's tons of .bar files and having all of them without knowing exactly which ones you need, is pointless. If you find out exactly which ones, let me know and I'll grab them off my phone. I know I've got Tetris as I play it every single bored moment of my boring life! haha!

Faceplates!

I finally got faceplates for my SoHo.

There's been faceplates out there for the horizontal display SoHo but not ANY for the vertical display (see my phone pic to the left) SoHo... until now.

Ebay it up. Starting bid at 99cents or $1.99 buy it now plus $4.99 shipping and $1.99 shipping for additional units you win by this one seller...
http://stores.ebay.com/YaHit-Co

Once there, do a search for 'kyocera kx1' in the top left hand side Store Search.

I got the solid black and the translucent (see thru) blue. It comes as the set, ie: front cover and battery cover.

Unlike after-market faceplates in the past that I have purchased, these are made very well. The display screens aren't just haphazardly glued on there waiting to fall off/out at any second, they are plastic riveted to the faceplate.

Anyway, check 'em out if you're in the market for vertical displays. Beats paying $15.00 for them direct from Kyocera who still don't even have vertical display SoHo faceplates on the market yet on their web store.. just still says COMING SOON! Hwo they release a phone and don't have all of the accessories ready to go for it, doesn't make good business sense.. financially anyway. The point of covers is to make money and they can't if they don't have them manufactured and ready for sale....
