How to Configure Full Internet Access On BlackBerry

Current Information as of February 26th, 2005. Newer Information may be located here.

You are interested, if you want to do any of the following, especially if you are an individual prosumer rather than a big corporate user. Such as run "BES/MDS-required" software without needing BES or MDSEasy 1-2-3 Instructions:
  1. Upgrade your BlackBerryOS
You need BlackBerry with OS 3.8 or later. If you have an older version of BlackBerryOS, please Download BlackBerryOS 4.0 and install it on your BlackBerry first.
  2. Configure your BlackBerry & Your Carrier
On the BlackBerry handheld, go to Options -> TCP
There is a new option in BlackBerryOS 3.8 and later. Then fill in APN with the provided APN listead in the below post, that is appropriate for your carrier. If no username or password is provided, leave these blank. If only a username is provided, then leave in the password. Also, ignore the Gateway IP address, unless your Blackberry specifically has a textbox to enter the IP address in. "APN" means "Access Point Name". Once you have saved the APN information, you should reboot your BlackBerry by removing and reinserting the battery.
  3. Run your BlackBerry Internet Software
Once you have filled this information, your Internet applications should work on your BlackBerry. TCP/IP makes Internet software work, including chat software: Verichat, WebMessenger, IRC, Telnet/SSH, Web browsing, etc.
Occasionally, some applications on the BlackBerry need to have the gateway or APN information entered directly into them. This is not common.

For cingular, the things we have to call to add to our account are free, correct? I don't want unexpected charges. I do have an unlimited internet plan.

Posted by: Mark Rejhon

Not free for Cingular, unfortunately. However, the latest information about adding the plan to Cingular is now currently located at www.BerryFAQ.com (Click "Configuring Internet" section there)

Posted by: knoppe01

Now that Cingular and ATT are one - which to use ? My 7290 originally came from ATT but is on the Cingular network.

Posted by: Mark Rejhon

Try both. Sometimes only one of the two works.

Posted by: smc

Telus now has full MDS and HTML support without being on the BES.

I need help....

I just got my "Unlocked" T-Mobile 7230. I work for Cingular and everything is going great with this. Unfortunately I cant figure out this internet thing. Ive been looking all day through different forums and cant seem to fix it.

I updated to 4.0 and I still dont have any browser icon. What do I need to do. I still have the unlimited data on my account from my old phone(which was a P910a)

Any help would be great.

Has anyone helped you with this yet? If not, I think I can help you.

Go into options --> host routing tables --> click --> register now. If that doesn't work login the your BWC and try resending your service books. My bad just noticed your data package is from your SE910. Do you have a BlackBerry data package yet? You'll need that for and data communication on your BlackBerry.

i just got the blackberry 7520 and i did have the i730 with nextel
i called nextel to aske how much and they are telling me it is an addditional 45 bucks amonth to add the web ,,, i asked about the static io address but she told me i didnt need it and that there is no other options but to buy this plan .... I read the above post but i can get in for nextel especially not for 40 bucks more ...... help me

so wait im on bell canada i wanna use the internet i have a 7250 im pretty much screwed for internet i dont have TCP does that i mean i have to pay for MDS hosting
is there any way i just use msn and internet browsing and email for freee?

Posted by: teknobabble

as it's been said above, unless you do a data plan, you have no web access. What I do is I use unlimited SMS messaging ($10/mth) to access hotmail and MSN.

Posted by: abz123

i have unlimited SMS and unlimited browser but the problem is i have no data plan

Posted by: teknobabble

If you read the info on the blackberry and configuring you will see that Bell Mobility does not allow you to use a TCP/IP stack on your berry. You must have a data plan (starting at $25/mth for 0.5mb). Your unlimited browser is useless on the blackberry platform. Your unlimited SMS if that was included will not cover the costs for things such as SMS alerts via MSN.

To get around that, I pay the unlimited $10 SMS package and it allows me to use my SMS via Hotmail and send messages that way. I however have no browser on my BB at all. If you wanted a BB as a phone with no data plan then you are stuck with Rogers only

Posted by: shelveen

those links up there dont work especially the one with the chat..my verichat doesnt work...help

Posted by: social1

Well I work for rogers I would be happy to sign you up. I like the functions they have and also 3 differnt browsers.

Yes I see the $25.00 price plan for blackberry does blow. But you can also change as much as you want your plan. You not stuck with it and you can actually get unlimited every month if you really figure it out. I do it all the time for customers.

Ok I have a new 7105t running Blackberry version 4.1.0.309. I went to Options, Advanced options, TCP and entered the APN info in the sticky. I then went to setup internet Email and entered all of my Hotmail info and received a message that you can only add an IMAP/POP account. I had the same issue with my Nokia 6620 on Cingular. In that case I was able to get into the mailbox settings screen and enter the info for hotmail. It has worked well for the last 2 years. I received the same message when I tried to add my Netscape email account. Is there a way to get into mailbox settings and if there is can anyone give me the settings for the above two services.

You are interested, if you want to do any of the following, especially if you are an individual prosumer rather than a big corporate user:
  • Run BES-required Internet software without BES!
  • Instant Messaging, AIM, ICQ, MSN (Verichat, WebMessenger, BerryVine, IM+, etc.)
  • Full HTML web browsing ability (Reqwireless, BlackBerry Browser, etc.)
  • IRC chatting (virca, wlirc, etc.)
  • telnet/ssh (Idokorro, etc.)
  • No BES needed! No MDS needed!
Easy 1-2-3 Instructions:
  1. Upgrade your BlackBerryOS
You need BlackBerry with OS 3.8 or later. If you have an older version of BlackBerryOS, please Download BlackBerryOS 4.0 and install it on your BlackBerry first.

BlackBerry TCP/IP Configuration Success Reports
  • AT&T - Now has TCP/IP; No MDS hosting needed
    Go to Options->TCP
    APN: proxy
    Username/password is blank

  • Nextel/Telus - iDEN - Works with TCP/IP
They are special because they are iDEN and more native TCP/IP. You need to order the static IP address option. This is done differently from the APN method. You have to call your Nextel/Telus customer service rep and order the static IP address, which is reported to cost about $4 extra per month for Nextel customers.

  • Rogers - Now has TCP/IP; No MDS hosting needed
    Go to Options->TCP
    APN: internet.com
    Username/password is blank
Note: If this does not work, call Rogers and get the "internet.com Access Point Name" added to your account. If they say it already exists, tell them to load up the records anyway, just to doublecheck.

  • T-Mobile - Now has TCP/IP; No MDS hosting needed
    Go to Options->TCP (or Tools->TCP)
    APN: wap.voicestream.com
    Username: Your T-MOBILE Username
    Password: Your T-MOBILE Password
Note: T-Mobile has fixed the port-blocking issue - see this post for more info. If it still does not work properly, just call T-Mobile (call after Feburary 11th, 2005), and ask them to get the "wap.voicestream.com Internet Access Point Name" added to your BlackBerry account at no extra charge.

  • Cingular - Now has TCP/IP; No MDS hosting needed
    Go to Options->TCP
    APN: wap.cingular
    Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
    Password: CINGULAR1
Cingular works now, though you may have to call Cingular to make sure that you ask for the "Data Connect" plan added in addition to your existing "BlackBerry Unlimited Data". Once this is done, you will have several line items that show up on your Cingular bill. The wap.cingular APN is the official Cingular recommended APN. Occasionally, Cingular Blue users may have to use an APN of "proxy" with blank username and password. An alternate configuration is an APN of "isp.cingular" with username "ISPDA@CINGULARGPRS.COM" and password of "CINGULAR1". More info in this this thread and Cingular contact information in this thread.

  • Rogers - Now has TCP/IP; No MDS hosting needed
    Go to Options->TCP
    APN: internet.com
    Username/password is blank
Note: If this does not work, call Rogers and get the "internet.com Access Point Name" added to your account. If they say it already exists, tell them to load up the records anyway, just to doublecheck.

  • Verizon - Model 7250 Now has TCP/IP; No MDS hosting needed
The Verizon model 7250 now has a TCP/IP stack, no configuration is needed. Many third party Internet applications work out of the box on it! However, the 6750 and 7750 does not have a TCP/IP stack, although a future BlackBerryOS may fix this (Version 4.0.0.204 or later may be required).

  • Bell Mobility - Does NOT Work; Need MDS hosting
Unfortunately, none of the Bell Mobility BlackBerries have a TCP/IP stack enabled. Not even the 7250. A future BlackBerryOS may fix this, or Bell Mobility might enable the feature in the future. No timeline known. For now, get BES/MDS Hosting in order to make 3rd party Internet applications work.

  • Sprint / Telus - CDMA - Might Work
Unknown. There is enough TCP/IP functionality in BlackBerryOS 4.0.0.204 or later, for software such as Verichat and Berry411 to work. This BlackBerryOS is preinstalled on the model 7250. Some software such as Reqwireless Emailviewer will require you to input gateway IP address information (See below). For the best TCP/IP support, you must use BES/MDS. You will need to pay $10 to $25 extra per month for BES/MDS Hosting in order to gain access to the Internet and TCP/IP software.

  • Other Carriers - Might Work
This is a list posted by a wonderful forum member bfrye on BlackBerryForums.com ... In addition to this list, there is also another list of alternate APN's on the Internet. You may have to telephone your carrier to tell them to get the Access Point Name (APN) added to your BlackBerry mobile phone account. Here are the most common APN's, although they can change over time:

What is the APN username and password for tmobileUSA.

My carrrier is Fido and I've gotten the GPS and IMz to work on my unlocked 8310 from rogers but the browser refuses to work. I've tried "Go into options --> host routing tables --> click --> register now." to solve my lack of service books but nothing happens after. I run v4.2.2.163 (platform 2.5.0.24). Please help.

I was wondering if there are settings I have to configure for the 8100 to view videos on youtube. Every time I try to view a video, I get a message that says "the protocol specified is not supported by the handheld. Please try a different URL." I just bought the phone from tmobile and it seems to have the latest software. Any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks. If there are suggestions, please leave me a PM.

Posted by: hillstrubl

you need to have handheld software version 4.3 or higher to view youtube on your pearl... assuming you have T-Mo based on your post here's the link.

http://members.a1.net/updateservice...00_4.5.0.55.exe

install this, then search for and delete the vendor.xml file (which allows you use non-tmobile branded firmware).

after which, open Blackberry desktop manager (assuming thats a recent version too) and plug in your BB

read this in its entirety before attempting!! -> http://www.blackberrycool.com/2008/...berry-software/

Disclaimer warning: only do this on a stable computer as if it screws up 1/2-way through your phone is a paperweight, and this could easily void your t-mobile warranty if you need to turn in for service and they notice.

otherwise t-mobile approved upgrades are here -> (but only go up to version 4.2.1.107, which you prob already have... http://t-mobile.com/bbupgrade
