1. Turn off phone and take out battery
2. Insert battery, and while it boots up press and hold Ctrl + Shift + F
3. After a few seconds you will be asked if you want to format or cancel

I recommend having the device open when inserting the battery so you can press the combination quickly.

Remember that this erases everything in the machine and it becomes like when you bought it. (I guess you know it, but mentioned it just in case).

This worked on my 9300, v5.22. You have to make certain that as soon as the inside display lights up, you are pressing the Ctrl, Shift and F keys simultaneously. Keep them pressed until the screen turns blue and it asks you if you would like to format. Answer YES with the appropriate button on the right side of the display. The unit will reboot, come up with the 3D handshake logo, display boot progress with the blue bar at the bottom of the display, and come up to ask you which country/language you would like to use.

Worked for me several times.

If you format the phone, All will be erased but not the apps which were installed on the memory card. If you want to get rid of the apps, delete the system file on the Memory card.

does formating the phone clears SIM lock.
I friquently see this message on my 9300
"Insert sim card" or "Sim card rejected"

I'm so TIRED of all the FUZZY instructions that makes the hard reset FAIL!!!
It's hard to understand how ANYONE can succeed with SOME of the instructions...
THIS IS THE CORRECT ONE, I'VE DONE IT a dozen times now to pinpoint EXACTLY what is needed!!

To perform a hard reset, follow this instruction TO THE LETTER:
  1. Restart the device. NOTE: You DO NOT have to remove the battery!! You can
JUST AS WELL use a FREE tool like TaskSpy: http://www.pushl.com/taskspy/
The restart option in TaskSpy is in the menu under "Tools"; Hotkey is Shift+Ctrl+R
(Non-related bug issue in v0.96: do NOT press the Menu key while in Preferences:
TaskSpy crashes and burns; use the ARROW keys in stead!)
NOTE: If you still decide to remove the battery and the battery is out too long,
you must press the power button on the front to start the device.
  2. When the image that says "NOKIA"(NOT the HANDS: that's TOO LATE!!!) comes up,
  3. press AND HOLD Shift+Ctrl+F(don't stress, there's PLENTY of time) and
  4. KEEP HOLDING KEYS(this is the CRUCIAL point) until you FIRST get A BLANK SCREEN, and
  5. KEEP HOLDING KEYS(this is the SECOND crucial point) until it prompts you to confirm the format!
You're welcome.

And BTW, it's "Shift+Ctrl" and NOT "Ctrl+Shift", so you're "shifting" a control character
and not "controlling" a capital letter. But this is just formal: it actually doesn't matter
if you press the Shift before the Ctrl or the Ctrl before the Shift,
as long as you press the character LAST.

PS. All the miserable bastards like me, who have actually TRIED holding down Shift+Ctrl+F
AT THE SAME TIME as they've inserted the battery AND placed the device down WHILE HOLDING
THE KEYS are probably as relieved as I was when they find that THIS IS A WASTE OF TIME.
("stupid Flanders and his stupid instructions...")

Good Luck!
