NEW!: P910x Firmware Update - March '05

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: BigFeat

An update is available for the following CDAs (162005/1,2). All other remaining CDA upgrades are TBA. No release notes launched as well.

Maybe this upgrade will have the final pieces for BB support in place. Rumor has it that most providers will be rolling out BB support to P910x series phones this month.

unfortunately mine is 162005/3

Posted by: tankee531

by the way, why the different CDA? different language bundles?

Just checked my phone again, and sorry no blackberry.

As for the different CDA's, I have no idea what it was for. I have to do more research on my spare time today. I hope that I can find the answer for you. Alohas for now.

I clicked on the link. Looks like it's for the P910i only?

I couldn't find any indication of an update for the P910a version.

Do you suppose this makes the performance any snappier? Any other improvements?

Posted by: Frommy

If the new firmware doesn't have blackberry, does the one from this page work?

This should answer your question.. As to your second question the answer is - No. The online upgrade online allows updates respective to the existing CDA.

Can you elaborate on the BB topic? Is this something that your IT guys setup for your phone specifically to work with their BB enterprise server?

Posted by: tankee531

Extracted from the SE P910i Blackberry user guide ....

"There are two versions of the BlackBerry service available: one for companies with their own email server (BlackBerry Solution) and one for use with Internet (ISP) Email accounts (Instant Email with BlackBerry).

The BlackBerry service automatically pushes all incoming emails to your phone and outgoing email to your email account. In addition, BlackBerry Solution users have access to the wireless calendar functionality and wireless access to the company's global address book so they can always keep up-todate."

The software supports both versions of service (but either 1 at a time i believe).

I'm using it to access my corporate email through my P910i instead of blackberry 7100g.

Where can one obtain the BB P910i connect client software from? I didn't think the BB connect sis file was released yet by SE. I know SE has released some documenation on installation and has left the service providers that task of issuing the client software.

I'm asking this question because I would have to say you are the 1st member to claim to have BB fully working on a P910x. Moreover, there is no publication of BB working with P910x anywhere else that I'm aware of. Some have done it with the P900 with the caveat that the IT department develop the software client necessary. I would be much obliged if you could expound on this subject matter. Moreover, let us know if you got both solutions to work.

You Download the software @ the T-Mobile Web site...

http://www.t-mobile.at/business/mob...load/index.

Posted by: Frommy

bmwf1techie in the RIM forum has it working with T-mobile US as well.

The client has been out for a few weeks now. I'm not getting my p910 until tomorrow to set up with my BES.

I managed to get all the necessary software now. However, setup is still an issue.

Posted by: Kingamir45

It took me four hours... Im talking BB Support, Tmobile Tech Support, Tier 2 and 3.. but finally a BB Data Connect specialist was able to figure it out...

He was quite amazed, he stated "this is not supposed to be available yet in the US, I can't belive it works"...

Posted by: tankee531

my setup was a breeze apart from figuring out the GPRS setting issue from BB and web surfing.

Probably having installed BB desktop for my 7100g had helped.

Posted by: bitablespore

I too have had it working now for 3 weeks... downloaded it from the same place.. Tmobile Austria. I dont want to sound greedy or conceited, but I was worried to say anything here, in case someone at T-mobile wised up and pulled the download off their site (then no access to newer versions/upgrades etc)... but since the cat is out of the bag, if anyone wants to ask questions on how I got it working, send me a PM. It took me 5 minutes to setup and have it connect into my companys BES.

Posted by: Bophasa

I tried to set it up on T-Mobile (US) They said the Pin was not recognized. How did you get past that? Thanks

Posted by: dotokpa

Just updated my P910a and now when I do a restore my contacts don't get restored.

Anyone update their P910a yet???

Posted by: Kingamir45

OK..Tmobile Tech Support people are dumb as a bag of nickels...
You must first try to provision your account on the Tmobile Black Berry website.. if that fails, which mine did, you must then call Black Berry support to provision your pin..

I was talking to the lead technician @ Blackberry Data Connect and he told me that this software is completely diffrent than any other Blackberry Software.. The software via the IMEI translates a generic PIN, this pin is not a valid pin and needs to be manually provisioned into their server. He also stated that Tmobile Austria (the original host of the software download), jumped the gun and Blackberry is in the process of having them remove that software download until it is fully released on a global scale in April...

however, after the pin is forced into the server, then it should be smooth sailing....

but the major issue is attachments...it seems that this software does not allow attachments to be opened... now because of the wacky PIN issue, Tmobile by default blocks attachment downloads, so you have to call back after all is provisioned to enable that feature. Mind you all this was done by me, the BlackBerry Data Connect tech, and BlackBerry Tmobile Support rep and it was conclusive that there are issues with this version of the software.. so push works fine, but not attacjments..

Posted by: bitablespore

I use a BES through my company and this portion worked right away...

When I went to the t-mobile blackberry site to change the PIN it told me I could not and to call tmobile. I did and the blackberry tech was able to see that I was using a P910a, my IMEI and the PIN used... He just reset my account and everything works flawlessly...... (until this week anyway when my company IT department set a IT policy that restricts the type of e-mail accounts used... now I can not use the tmobile website to redirect my emails... that specific service book is automatically deactivated on my phone.

I am using Windows 2000. I have the latest version of Java. I updated my DSS-25 drivers just to be sure. I am using Firefox.

But it NEVER goes anywhere. This was true with the previous version. (BTW, I am 162005/3 R1A29). The Update Service applet starts, and the station loses sync (light turns out). It tells me to turn off the phone and place it on the base station, which I do. Then it goes to power cycle the phone and ALWAYS returns the Failure to Communicate error. Then, to top it off, the phone DOES power up.

Doesn't matter if base station has power cord plugged in or not.

Can someone PLEASE help me. I would REALLY like to update this phone.

Posted by: BigFeat

You need to use the recovery option. You may need to go through that process a few times if it fails. I was in that boat once with one device (P900) in the past, but the recovery mode eventually helped. If your phone is functional, but not updated I would also suggest that you reset the phone.

Posted by: wr wagon

Thank you for the input, BigFeat. I tried using the recovery mode, but got an error box: "Error in Communication with the device." This happened when it was like 2% of the way into the update.

Any idea why I might be getting such an error?

Posted by: tankee531

I went to the service centre to upgrade my firmware, the version turned out to be R4A16 ?!?!?!??!

There are too many variables as to why you are getting the error. All of which includes your mobile phone, pc configuration, and the online updater. As I stated before you may really want to try to continue to update it.. Try to master reset as well if you can.

I have seen the online updater behave very strangely ever since they implemented the service for the P900. I think the majority of the problems is on the SE side.

Posted by: tankee531

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry7100/4.0.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1)

It is R2A16 instead of R4A16. Did the service center loaded an older version for me?

I'm happy to report that I have upgraded to R4A10 with no problems as of yet. If I find any, I'll report back!

So all you P910a users, WE'RE UPGRADABLE NOW!!

Under Applications

Go to "Edit" -> "System Information" then arrow over until you find it.

It's been a little while now. How is the latest greatest P910a firmware? Any improvements to the speed issue?

Posted by: kmozis

I have exactly the same problem (as describe a/m error message from Java Console). Have you somehow resolved it?

Posted by: haywood

i dont know about anyone else but i thikn i upgraded my firmware about 2 months ago and my cda is 162005/8 and it upgraded me to r4a11. whats wierd now is that jsut today i checked my cda for any newer updates and now i get:

Your device is not supported

CDA162005/8 is not supported or you have entered an incorrect number.

If the number is correct, it means that your operator does not approve usage of the service for this device. If the number is incorrect, click Previous and enter the right number.

???? i dont get it.... oh well. i guess ill have to wait and see if the ycorrect their site.

I got that error once, I think you forgot to enter the CDA first. It looks like you dont need it since its on the left of that field, but you do.

WARNING: I updated to R4A02 and when I restarted the phone my Language Setting defaulted to Chinese!

Took me a half hour to fumble through the menus to get it back into english.

Posted by: haywood

i have never had to enter CDA before the number before and if you notice on the error message, it placed CDA in front of my entry already.

also, if you go to the SE site where you enter your cda number ..preceeding the entry box is already "CDA" there for you.

i think SE just might be a lil screwy right now. cus i have R4A10 as of right now which i think is the newest org version

Posted by: cryptoptic

Haywood I am having the same error I am at R4A11. I checked like 3 weeks ago and I was able to check with no problems. Must be SE site because now I am getting an error when checking.

Posted by: haywood

good to hear..... not to say good youre having problems too but good that its not just me hallucinating.

oh and SE's response to the issue was so vague that its not worth mentioning. hopefully htey fix it back to where it just states that there are no newer updates available instead of making us think that we are no longer supported.

good looking out.......

Posted by: neuroking

I get the same 'not supported' error with my new p910a. 162005/8 here. I'm a new user, so I thought I had done something wrong!

Is there a changelog type listing of what is updated at each release? I currently have R3A04 and want to know aboutt he new goodies!

Have an /8 users been able to get to the firmware update? I still can't get it.

Sorry for the delay in my response but I was having SEVERE pc problems.

As of today, I can report no problems!! Everything is as it was before. Hope this helps!

Posted by: neuroking

I still can't update. I emailed SE support - or as they should be called "Masters of passing the Buck" - and this is what they said:

This message is in response to your question about using the Sony
Ericsson Update Service for your P910a. It does not appear that CDA162005/8
is supported by the service. Different network operators provide
different customized software versions for the device and the update is only
supported if that specific version has been authorized by the carrier.
The number you entered, CDA162005/8, is a correctly formated code but
is not supported.

Can anyone help? Is every United States Cingular customer never allowed to update their firmware? (I bought mine unlocked from SE themselves)

Posted by: nicolasl46

I have a question, can any body tell me if i could flash/flex my P910i as with any other phone, so i could get 850Mhz band and EDGE instead of GPRS?

Posted by: neuroking

Heard back again from SE, and this was interesting:

"Please contact your service provider to be sure that they didn't lock
your phone to their service."

Can Cingular lock a phone they didn't sell? I thought they couldn't....

Posted by: Mr.Incredible

I updated mine today....Fairly smooth update with no hassles.
It updated me to the R5A02...Not sure how new this is but the one that was on here was not this one.

Posted by: nicolasl46

i'm having an issue trying to update, it tells me thaa my service provider doesn't alowe me to update the software, I have a P910i, unlock, what service provider are they talking about?

Updated the firmware is now CDA162005/8, my p910a now can not connect to the network. Called SE support they said try an update next week, or send it in to be restored to its original firmware. The update service will not let me restore. Says no service for this operator.

Posted by: denix

Is 162005/8 still blocked? Does anyone know what provider this CDA# corresponds to? I see /7 and /9 are working now. But my unlocked /8, which I bought from LetsTalk, not from an operator, still gives me a message about being blocked my my operator. What a BS...

Posted by: simon_n

Can somebody tell me whats the new adds in the update? Whats the difference and what will the result be of the new version of update. Apart from that the phone will do better.

Somebody who knows list all the news in the update if its present of Sony Ericsson what the news is.

Please.

Posted by: garryweil

I hope the update includes support for BB push email

Posted by: simon_n

Me too, but when can we get a answer on that hope then?

Apologises if this is answered elsewhere, I had a look but couldn't find it.

I've a p910i with CDA162006/15 R1C01, is this a later version that R1A30? I'd assume so but not totally sure.

I've noticed a few weird things with the phone, so was looking for an upgrade, I can't update that CDA from the online site and O2 seem less than helpful. Is there anything I can do or is it possible to remove the O2 branding? The BB stuff would be exceptionally useful to me.

What is fixed in the new firmwire?

Posted by: neuroking

I called SE, they said the problem was with the website and to check back in a week. Checked several times over the following weeks and still no go. Then I emailed them and I got this:

This reply doesn't make sense because it is mixing positives and negatives. Is this correct:

-The phone SHOULD be more than 50% charged

-The phone SHOULD be switched on and in the cradle with the power cord plugged in.

-Antivirus and firewalls SHOULD be switched off.

-The port that the phone is connected to SHOULD be checked in the Phone Connection Link, and Enabled in the Phone Monitor Options Control Panel.

Is the above correct?

If this is correct, the phone is still not updating.

Why are they shafting the 162005/8? What a pain in the a$$. I reviewed this phone for a website, and we knocked it down a couple points because it requires too much maintenence. Took me a week to get it to sync with outlook and over 2 months to get a friggin update. This phone is NOT for casual users at all.

LOL! Their reply: Please call customer support.

I'm on the phone with them right now...

Them: Yadda Yadda... our web site and update service are being updated.
Me: It's been 2 months. When will it be working?
Them: No idea. Let me pull up info... Okay you phone CAN be upgraded, but the website will not work. So you can either wait or send the phone in for 2 weeks.
Me: What kind of waiting are we talking about? Another month of a year?
Them: Probably less than a month.
Me: Fine, I'll wait. *grumble*

I feel so productive!

R5A02 is up again for cda 162003/3 updated mine and all is ok (until now) try it guys.....

FINALLY!

162005/8 works! R5A02.

Question: Now that all my info was wiped out, do I do a restore or do I have to reinstall all my themes? I was afraid system files would be included in the restore which would muck things up!

Thanks guys!

My CDA version is CDA162005/7 R4A10. From the replies of other users, I'm afraid to update the firmware.

Did anyone try R5A02 for 162005/8 already? What are your impressions?

I've noticed that the update service does NOT like Firefox. You have to use IE.

Cheers!

Neuroking,

What was the number to contact SE? I seem to be in the same situation where the update does not want to work.

Thanks.

Posted by: neuroking

The number is on the SE site. I think it was this one: 1-866-766-9374

I have the 2005/8 and finally updated to R5A02. I see no significant difference in interface response or features that I use on a regular basis. All that fuss, and nothing really to show.

R5A02 dosen't support BB Connect. R4A10 works with BB Connect. Don't upgrade the phone if you are using BB Connnect.

Posted by: aless

More info? Define BB Connect?
I use Jabra BT800 with my p910i at the moment with R4A10.

Thanks,
A.

BB Connect = Blackberry Connect

There is a newer BB connect, v2.54 that works with this new P910x firmware

i upgraded my orange unlocked p910i from R1 CDA to R5 using SEUS... and the thing got LOCKED!!! went to the guy who sold me the phone (grey markt) and he unlocked it for me..
Bottom line, Dont upgrade if your phone is BRANDED.
