Best phone for...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Around $220 or under? I've been looking into the Nokia 6230 (seems to have all I need, only gripe is that watching videos on the small screen may be a pain in the ***) and the LG VX8000, even though its slightly out of my price range.

Any opinions on these or suggestions for better phones?

Also, I know the 6230 can play mp3s but on Nokia's site it says it won't play mp3 ringtones. I'm pretty sure there is a way to, am I correct?

Posted by: braindead5400

yes the phone can play mp3 tones. Are you buying an unlocked one or one from a carrier? If you are getting an unlocked phone, then look at the moto E398.

Posted by: KickTheChair

Probably just get one from a carrier.

The Nokia seems to fit all my needs except the screen size seems pretty lackluster for watching videos on. I'd definitely prefer a bigger screen.

then get 6600 with Symbian.

or the 6620

i am also heavely looking at the 6230... but i stumdled upon the E398.. will this work in the US on cingulars network? what are some opinions on this phone?

E398 is the best phone for its buck, i'm sure you'll love it, check the links;

http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...threadid=398830

http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...threadid=562130

and yes, it works with every GSM service carrier

Posted by: TanSahara

is it gsm 800/850?

Posted by: braindead5400

no it is not. What city do you live in? If you live in a city where cingular is 850, then you'll be on the blue network all the time and will lose the benefit of having two networks to work with.

Posted by: Levent

it has two versions sold; 850/1800/1900 and 900/1800/1900. 850 version is little more expensive than the 900 version. You can get detailed info. from the links.

Posted by: TanSahara

what is the blue network? i am in columbus ohio

Posted by: braindead5400

blue network is the aquired at&t network. I've also never seen the 850 version of the phone, only the rare quadband version

ok , i meant quadband so it is 850/900/1800/1900 which are more expensive than triband E398s. (i must be hungry )

Posted by: TanSahara

so what are the freq's of the blue band Vs. orange band?

Posted by: braindead5400

it varies. In chicago, Cingular uses 850 while at&t used 1900. If I were to put my Cingular sim into a non 850 phone, then I'd be on the at&t (blue) network all the time and not have the advantages of having dual networks. In columbus, Cingular uses the 850 netowrk and at&t's 1900 network. If you have an 850 phone now, your phone can utilize both networks to get the best possible signal, without the 850, then you phone would only run on one network and you could find yourself loosing reception in some areas

Posted by: Levent

E398 is a nice phone but for you to keep in mind that you can get a free 6230 if you sign a 2 year contract with cingular. Also don't worry about quadband. A triband E398 will work for you in Columbus (mostly).

Posted by: TanSahara

the tri band e398 would be 900/1800/1900 and accordint to people on here and cingular CS i just spoke to if i lost the 850 band i would loose the advantage of haveing dual band... i really would like to get an e398 but untill i can confirm for sure that Columbus is primarly 1900 i probally wont do it...

Posted by: braindead5400

if you know anyone with an unlocked non 850 phone, ask them to borrow it so you can see what reception is like with your sim card. If you want the 6230, the get it from another site otehr than cingular because you can get a better deal. (for example, amazon.com or a1wireless.com)

is that without a plan? and are you happy with your 6230? i know nokia is know for theere reception... but the 6230 is still kind of pricey for being "just a phone" i may wait for the 6230i with the mega pixil camera :-)

the 6230 isn't just a phone. Its got a great VGA camera, Edge, radio, mp3 player, mmc slot (up to 1-2 gigs) video recording and playback bluetooth and speakerphone. The only thing the i is gonna do that the 6230 can't is take better pictures and supposedly have stereo speakers

Posted by: TanSahara

i wished someone from my area would chime in and let me know if the lack of the 850 band is really much to worry about... i really like the e398 and the price is awsome... looks like one can be had for about 220 - 270 bucks... but if the 6230i is suposed to have stereo speakers then it would be very compairible... can you use MP3s as ringers on the 6230? and how does the currant camera look picture wise.. mind snapping a few photos and emailing them to me?

Posted by: braindead5400

yes the 6230 can play mp3's for ringers. Keep in mind that the i model will be higher in price. l

^look there for pics

man thoes are unbeilievible qulity compaired to my t616...... i got to get me a 6230...

how do mp3's sound when played through the phones speaker... would it be worth it to wait for the "i" supposing its got a better cam and speakers?

Posted by: KickTheChair

So basically it's down to the Motorola E398, LG VX8000 and the Nokia 6230 for me.

If the reception and everything on the Moto is as good as I hear the 6230 is supposed to be, then I'm definitely leaning towards it.

How is the screen on the E398? Also, if I buy it unlocked what do I need to do to get service? Can I just bring it to a Cingular dealer?

the mp3's are loud but the sound isn't as rich as the E398. Sounds alot better though headphones though

All you have to do is stick the sim card in and set up the internet and you are good ot go. The E398 has good reception but its not quite as good as the 6230. The E398 has a better screen than the 6230 though

Posted by: KickTheChair

Now reading some reviews, the E398 is supposedly laggy and has low earpiece volume? Can anyone confirm or deny these?

the thing you can do in Moto e398 and you can't in 6230 is modding with seem files which means there are prrograms that let you hack into phone software and enable voice recording, turn the volume up 8 times higher than its standard version (so i definetely don't agree on 6230 giving better sound thru headphones and it's vice versa), or change the screen by playing with screen files or watch lord of the rings whole movie on 176X220 screen. Those programs are avail. anywhere in hofo moto forums or i even can send you them. Yet, it's still the loudest phone to me with stereo 3D speakers which is second to none. If you want to listen to FM radio, you can do it by plugging a FM headset into the phone (you have to plug the headset to 6230 as well if you want to listen to the radio). Its reception is far better than others with 6230. You can have any service carrier with it.

i meant compared to playing the sound though the speaker, not comparing it to the E398
