chattermaill/palm mail app battery question

I was reading about how using chattermail can result in excessive battery drainage due to tha fact that it maintaisns a connection with your imap server all day. however, I know that it only actively uses that connection when your imap server PUSHES a message to your phone (using IDLE)... SO my question is, is this realy more taxing on the battery than having the native palm mail app poll for mail every 15 minutes? I noticed that app also leaves the connection "on" but only sends/recieves data at the assigned interval...
