VX4700 Data Cable

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: mikel1965

From every thing I am seeing ...the VX 4700 uses the same data cable as the 3200, 6100 and 7000....anyone know if this is true?

also I see some cables with little boxes in the cable..and some do not have....I have a 4400 cable and a 6000 cable now....and both have the boxes on cable so I assume I should stick with them...any help?

Thanks
Mike

Posted by: lgreenberg

Moved to the software forum.

Posted by: wolverine423

You can use the vx6000 cable with the vx6100 and vx7000. You just kinda have to gently work it in. see this: http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...threadid=524526

Read the first paragraph under Data Cable.

Posted by: mikel1965

yep it sure does work......is a bit tight...and have to rock it just a bit to get connection..but we got ringers on the VX4700 tonight....and WOW there are nice and loud

Posted by: 76bull

hey mike or anyone else, could you give me an idea of what you did to get the ringtones to work on the 4700? i have went through several posts and tutorials and i got one ringtone to work, mp3 changed extension to .mid played fine. Tried another and now none of my ringers show up on the phone. I've used QPST and Bitpim both connecting fine and writing files seems to be ok. Just after reboot of phone they dont show up? Any ideas would be great thanks alot for any response. I must be misssing something easy.

Bull

Posted by: mikel1965

I used midi and mp3 both and both worked fine....i could not get bitpim to connect but QST did....with QST is seems when you load ringers u need to load em all at the same time......so if you add ringers.....add all of them every time....that seemed to work for me let me know if I can be of more help

Mike

Posted by: 76bull

Hey thanks alot for the response mike. I found the problem and i would like to post this to everyone.

The ringers i added did not show up after adding them and a power cycle so i deleted the Brewringers index file did a power cycle and boom they showed up and worked fine. I used QPST by qualcomm with a #19 futredial cable from radio shack.

Here is a screen shot of the file tree so everyone knows which file to delete. File Tree Screen Shot

Also do the same with images add them to the /dload/img/ directory and delete the brew image index file in same folder as the ringer index file.

Just remember to delete the index file everytime you add a new ringer or image and the phone will remake the index with the new files. Hope this is very helpful to all who have a vx4700!!!

Sound Files tested are mp3, and mid files with either extension.
Image files tested are bmp, jpg, and gif at 128x128 pixels

Posted by: mikel1965

yep bull you are SSSOOOO right....deleting the index file works like a charm...i hate to delete stuff unless I know for sure LOL....and audio formats are right on the money....what is so cool too is the fact u can have voices in the music..most midi files suck....hard to reproduce the exact music.....thanks for the info bull

Posted by: 76bull

Glad you're happy. lol I know how ya feel mike about deleting stuff like that cause i've messed up a few phones in my time lol. This time i just said screw it and did it! So far the lg phones seem much more stable than the audiovox phones. I do like audiovox they just arent as stable. If anyone else needs help with it i.e. dont understand how to do it drop me a line and i'd be happy to help ya personally step by step, although i think everyone will do fine.

This phone rocks now!!

Posted by: dmmptt

which driver did you use for the Futuredial cable. Both Bitpim and QPST are not recognizing my phone.

Posted by: 76bull

I used a prolific usb driver. I'm not sure where i downloaded it but i think it was from the lg 6000 or 6100 tutorial on this board. If nothing else pm me and i can send them to ya asap.

let me know if you need it.

oh, i see it says you have the v60p? Did you get a 4700? Just making sure no confusion is all. This thread is about the 4700 just making sure.

Posted by: dmmptt

I did get the 4700 and love it. I figured out how to get the MP3 ringtones over using the filesystem technique on Bitpim, however, where do you put the wallpaper that you created?

Posted by: 76bull

You put the wallpaper in /dload/img/ directory then of course as i said before delete the /download index/ brewimageindex file and reboot should be all there is too it good luck glad ya like the phone i love it!

Posted by: Dalite

What is everyone using?

Posted by: mikel1965

I am usin QST for ringers and wallpaper...I have not got bitpim to work on my VX4700 yet.....so my phone book is not backed up as of yet

Posted by: Dalite

Set bitpim to VX4400 for phone book and try VX4600 Telus for Wallpaper.

I have sent the phonebook both ways using VX4400, and I have uploaded .bmp wallopaper using VX4600US (but I havent been abkle to access it on the phone yet).

Just got the VX4700 tonight, and I will be able to concentrate a little better tomorrow. I will also continue reading the forum oposts to get some clues.

Posted by: podwarrior

Hey guys,

I've got the vx4700...I have downloaded the QPST program and I have been able to move over a sound file. I have tried both .mp3 and .mid extensions, however when i try to play the song, nothing happens. I have deleted the brew files. What am I missing?

Posted by: sunynp

What size is your file, and what settings do you use to save the file? Also can you see the files on your phone?

Posted by: Techno

it seems that the futuredial #19 and #49 are "amost" identical??

I really get a nervous feeling about forcing in a connector and that seemed to be what was involved with using a #19 and the vx4700, does the #49 cable solve that?

thanks for any info

Posted by: Dalite

FWIW, I am using a Future Dial #19 tethered to my VX4700 to send this reply using QuickLink Mobile software.

The #19 isn't listed as the cable for the VX4700, but it seems to work OK, as long as there is no strain on the connector.

It does come out fairly easily........

I am thinking about getting this phone does anyone with it know if the settings used to program the WAP browser are the same as the vx-7000, 8000 annd 6100???

Posted by: crzybordr86

did you try restarting QPST? Sometimes it's as simple as turning the QPST server on and off.

Go into settings Menu, Settings (9), Data Settings (6), PC Connection (2), and select RS-232C (Com Port).

Apparently the cable in the MOK is either one of the USB to Serial Converter type or a serial cable. The 4700 has a quirk that makes it defaul t back to USB.

Also, check this setting everytime prior to going on line, as the 4700 also has a tendency to choose the "Closed" option on the PC Conection, depending on which program you are using and how it is exited.

Greetings, folks.

I like just about everything I've heard about the VX4700's non-PTT cousin, the VX4650, and I'm almost ready to pull the trigger and buy one.

What's holding me up is the thought of having to enter 250+ contacts manually. Can anyone confirm that they have been able to upload or download contacts in bulk between a PC and a VX4700? If so, could you tell us which cable, tool, and configuration settings you used? I'd love to find out that this is possible, or at least might be possible in the near future.

Thanks in advance.

Posted by: Dalite

I am using a Radio Shack (Future Dial) Cable 19 and Susteen DataPilot for software. The cable communicates, but it isn't the greatest fit for the VX4700. It is hard to keep it locked in, if there is any strain on the cable.

I also have a USB Data/Charging cable that I got off of eBay that I haven't tried. It has a sticker on the box with the URL: www.USBDataCable.com.

If you purchase the Mobile Office Kit from Verizon, it should contain both the cable and utility software for both internet access and phone data. I have the MOK software, but still use the Data Pilot software.

You can also use the phone to emulate a modem (With laptop, PC or PDA) for internet access for minutes used during peak times, or free on nights and weekends...

I would like to thank everyone that contributed to this post. By deciphering all of your individual comments, I was able to connect to my 4700, add mp3 ringtones, create mp3 ringtones, add pictures for wallpaper, and even update the phone book so that I wouldn't have to insert each one through the keypad.

I've got Audacity for mp3 ring-tone creating, QPST for file loading, and BitPim 0.7.33 for the phone book(I used the vx4400 setting to take care of that).

So again, I love this phone, my wife has even created her own language to describe the the thing....

Does anyone know if you can change the little "chirp" when you are in PTT mode?

"So, I'll 'ping-pong' you later when I need to talk to you..."

pingpong is PTT, but push to talk is too many syllables....

Posted by: ziggy66

Unfortunately that's one setting that you can't change. That not the only thing you can't even adjust the volume on the "ping pong" tone! I like that! We finally got tired of the PTT not working so we bailed out and eventually got he VX4650 which is the 4700 without PTT.

I'm glad that you were able to update your phone. Yeah I have called VZW to notify them of changing the firmware to allow the PTT alert tone to be changed. Whether it will happen is another story. Our PTT service has been working good.

Posted by: ziggy66

in dealing with Verizon Data Support which is ultimately responsible for PTT they told me that LG was the one to contact and not them! I contacted LG and they pointed the finger right back at Verizon. LG told me that they built the phone to Verizon's spec and any change request would have to come from them! Nice when everyone points the finger at everyone else. I was also told to talk to the phone side and ask them if they could help. When I did that they attempted to pass me to Data support so good luck getting anything when it comes to PTT done. The group that's responsible is trying to pan it off on everyone else.

Posted by: Americonium

Hey man, everything's groovy.....

If we can't change it, no biggie. I'm sure it's so they can have their own signature chirpy sound, like Nextel. Whatever. I'm just happy that it works, and that I could use my own mp3 collection to create ringtones from. So, I have a phone that works, and I'm happy.....

I'm easy, can't you tell?

Wow, thanks for this update Americonium. When you say that you updated your phonebook, does that mean you were able to upload entries from a .CSV file, or from MS Outlook, or from an existing BitPim file from an older phone? Or a scenario I haven't listed? I don't see anything specific in the BitPim documentation about how to upload addressbook data.

Thank you!

Posted by: Americonium

Maybe updated was not quite the right terminology. I typed it all in and transmitted it into the phone via bitpm. However, it's much easier than punching it in with the keypad on the phone.

After calling around for availability, I went to a VZW retail store this evening and got what must have been the last MOK in my area that contains a USB-to-Serial cable that exactly matches the LG VX4650. (I ended up buying a MOK for the 3200 - cable also compatible with 6100 and 7000).

I loaded the enclosed Prolific drivers and the cable was detected right way. The enclosed Smith Micro Phone Manager software was crippled - it did not let me complete installation because it detected my 4650 as "incompatible" with a 3200 package. I would have appreciated the chance to say "OK, I understand the risks and want to go ahead anyway."

So I moved on to BitPim to attempt to upload contacts. There is a menu command to import directly from an Outlook profile which worked pretty well, considering the purchase price. I wouldn't mind seeing an easier or faster way to map Outlook fields to telephone fields. After a few fits and starts, I successfully uploaded about 200 contacts from an Outlook profile.

I encountered a brief obstacle with QPST but thanks to HoFo I went and found the instructions that require the detection and configuration of a specific port (in my case COM9). I was able to upload both ringtones and wallpaper, but I got a fright when I got a warning about a "Bad File Name - Error Code 113" in QPST. Apparently my file name was too long. So keep your mp3 file names pretty short.

Overall I'm pretty pleased, although I wish VZW had timed my phone's launch with the release of OEM accessories like the MOK. Since the 3200 s/w is useless to me I'm thinking of returning the kit and getting a new one when it is released for the 4650/4700, or trying out a third party tool like DataPilot or that MobileAction tool. Thanks everyone for your great documentation and sharing of knowledge!

Posted by: afroning

What folder do the ringtones go into?

Posted by: LGPhunk

I have succedded with the above method using BitPim on a VX4650 phone. I am using the settings for a VX4400 and through the file tree can add and delete ringtones and wallpapers. Thanks for the info!

Ringtones - user/sound/ringer

EDIT: Just wanted to let you guys know I transferred an MP3 and am using that as my ringtone, didn't have to convert or rename to midi format.

Posted by: sunynp

Yeah, I use mp3 format for my ringtones as well without having to rename them to midi.

My Verizon dealer took all my contacts from my old Motorola phone and put them in the LG 4650 phone. They have a machine that does this. They say they charge $15 or so... but if you wheel and deal, you can get them to do it for free.

Does anyone know where to find QPST? I have had little luck finding it. Thanks.

If you talk to them enough they will give you just about anything. Phone contact transfers are all gravy for them. So if you buy the phone tell them up front before the purchase that you want the transfer for free. That way you'lll know if there going to be cool about it.

Hi folks,

I know I'm a little late to the party here... this looks like a lot of great information but it's a bit sprawling. I'm wondering if someone who's successfully transferring files to the VX4650 would mind posting what exactly they're using, so we can find it all in one place? Pretty please? Cable/driver/software/settings/procedure if possible would be awesome. I'm trying to use a USB data cable that purports to be compatible with the 4700, and neither BitPim nor DataPilot is detecting it, so I could really use the help.

Thank you!!!
Ron Moses

Alright, I have a vx4650 and here's what I have done:

I started off by buying a cable from ebay from this person: http://stores.ebay.com/DWOODSZ-COM-USB-Data-cables

I started by installing the LGUSBDriver. The Driver is v3.35.0.600
I have the Diagnostic Port set to COM2
The USBModem is set to COM4

I then installed BitPim. I used the version that was on the CD that the guy gave me from ebay, which is v0.7.25-official

For the settings, I went to "Edit->Settings" I used LG VX4400 for the phone, and COM2 (whichever COM port is your Diagnostic Port)

To see everything, go to the "Filesystem" Tab and click on the "+".

To put wallpapers on your phone, go to "dload->img" and right click on "img" and go to "New File". Find the wallpaper you want on your computer and put it in that img directory. NEXT, delete the BrewImageIndex file in the "download->dloadindex" directory. Right click on any directory and click "Reboot Phone" Once it's rebooted go to the Media directory on your phone itself to see the wallpapers.

To put ringtones on your phone, go to "user->sound->ringer" click on the "ringer" directory and choose "New File". Find the ringer you want from your computer and put it in the ringer directory. NEXT, delete the BrewRingerIndex file in the "download->dloadindex" directory. Right click on any directory and click "Reboot Phone" Once it's rebooted go to the Settings directory on your phone itself to see the ringer.

Hope that helps...

Posted by: ron2112

Thank you LGPhunk! That provides quite the tidy road map. Very much appreciated!!!

EDIT: Yay!!! It's working. BitPim still insists it can't find my phone, but it does show the file system and transfers files. I just added a ringtone, it was a piece of cake. Thank you SO MUCH!!!

Does anyone have any hints as to how to back up the phonebook?

One question : I read (above)
"I started by installing the LGUSBDriver. The Driver is v3.35.0.600 I have the Diagnostic Port set to COM2 The USBModem is set to COM4"

Where did you find these settings?
Thanks.

Posted by: LGPhunk

I found the settings in the Device Manager, I'm using Windows XP.

As far as the phonebook, it is in the "pim" directory, called pbnumber.dat but no idea how to back it up onto your computer, just save it(?)

Posted by: Bruce95

I've got a VX4650 too.

I went to my Verizon dealer and ordered a Mobile Office Kit. It was salty at $40.00, but it showed up at me door a couple of days later. The CD in the kit had the USB Driver, a Phone Book Manager, and the EZAccess Installation (which lets you use the phone as a modem for your laptop at 14400 thru verizon).

I installed the USB Driver and the Phone Book Manager. The Phone Book Manager connects to the phone right away, and showed me all of my contacts in Spreadsheet Form. I simply made a backup. I haven't tried adding any new ones. But it looks fairly easy to do so.

I did not install the EZAccess, as I already have AOL. I set up AOL to use the Phone as a modem (AOL automatically detected it)... and it connected without issue. It is a little on the slow side, but could be useful for checking email while on the road.

I then found QPST 2.7 on the internet. I installed it. Note: Before you run it, you have to change your Phone's Data Settings to use the Com Port at 115200. I then started QPST, and it recoginized the phone right away. I was able to download several ring tones. I deleted the BrewRingerIndex file, and when I exited the QPST, it rebooted my phone. The Ringers were there when the phone restarted.

I've tried BitPim too, but so far haven't been able to get it to work.

Yes, save the pbnumber.dat file.

All this jibber jabber about different tricks to use this feature on these phones is very frustrating. I wish there was one clearing house for how to connect each phone and get it work in bitpim. More importantly, I wish LG could just make software and cables that works with all their phones. I guess that probably isn't going to happen. I've got a VX4700 and a VX6100 and I can't get either of them to show up in bitpim. Any help out there?

Posted by: sunynp

Most of the problems I have read tend to be with either drivers, but usually with cable. I have a cable that was purchased from Susteen, and I'm able to use it on a vx3200, 4700, and 6100 with no problems. Also I use DatapilotPC and QPST as my software.

If you are having problems with the 6100 and Bitpim, then the problems is with your cable or drivers. Bitpim does not support the 4700, but you can trick it. Check this link for the 4700, and this one for the 6100.

I think my problems are with Drivers. The cable I have is the one with the Box in the middle of it. Its been a while since I got it, but I don't think I got any drivers with it. The only drivers I can find seem to only install the phone (VX 6100) as a modem, which I was actually able to use one time as a modem (but extremely slowly.) Even when I had it hooked up as a modem it will not show up in Bitpim.

Is anyone familiar with the cable I have?
http://cgi.ebay.com/FOR-LG-VX7000-V...Qcmd ZViewItem

That is what the cable looks like that I own.

Where do I get the correct drivers for it? The cable itself is not automatically recognized when I plug it into the computer, but the phone is when I plug it into the cable.

How should I configure bitpim? I do not feel like waiding through 16 pages of redundant threads to find that information. Can anyone sum it up?

Thanks

Posted by: sunynp

Try the drivers label as all other LG phones. Before installing these drivers, change the PC Connection on the phone from USB to RS-232. If that does not work then reset PC Connection, uninstall drivers, reboot PC, and install new drivers.

Posted by: bradleonard

Guess I am the only one paying attention to this post thread anymore. I finally found the CD with the drivers for the cable that I have. I have been able to isntall the VX4700 as a modem and I have even been able to do some stuff in BitPim with the 4700. I have been able to get the phonebook, but I have not been able to get the images yet. This thread actually seems to have the most accurate information regarding the data cable and the VX4700, although I have not been able to make images work yet.

Posted by: sunynp

What steps have you taken to accomplish this task?

Posted by: bradleonard

I forgot to quote the post that told how to do it.... but for contacts I used the VX4400 setting on RS232 @ 115xxx. For downloading pictures from the phone I used the same port settings but I used the VX4600 with Telus Mobilty. I was not able to upload picture for some reason, even when I deleted the brew index file. As for installing the phone as a modem, once you have your cable drivers properly installed, windows will usually automatically detect the phone and install it. Although once I installed my VX4700 the computer would not recognize my VX6100 as a modem or that it was even hooked up.

Thats all I got for now.

Posted by: sunynp

I'm sorry. I meant what have you done to upload your pics to your phone. Cuz I have no problems with this task, and I wanted to see if I could help.

Posted by: bradleonard

Well when I upload the pics, they seem to go to the phone, but then they don't show up in the downloaded pic section. I tried deleting the Brew image index but that didn't help. Would the pics not show up if they were too big or the wrong size?

Posted by: sunynp

Correct. The file should be set to 128x128, and the file size should probably be less than 20kb. I compress my files down to around 5kb. See if this helps. Also check the file name because if it is to long that will also prevent it from showing up.

Posted by: LakeFishing

bradleonard, if I read you properly, you have successfully installed the drivers for your Serial-to-USB cable (Serial = RS232 = COMx on the phone end, and USB on your computer's end); you have been able to use the phone as a modem; and you're still trying to get images uploaded. Right?

I'm not sure what software tools you've used to connect via modem, or to upload sounds or addressbook data, or if you've attempted to do these things. As far as image uploads go, I've had the best luck with QPST--I found the phone got cranky when I used BitPIM. Give QPST a whirl and let us know if you are still stymied. Good luck!

Posted by: bob bismal

Can the VX4700 accept pix messages from other verizon phones?

Posted by: sunynp

No. A text message would be sent to your phone to visit VZW's Pix site to see the picture.
