For the people that set up their mpx220 as a modem

I followed the directions on setting up my mpx220 as a modem thats listed in the FAQ. When I get to installing the drivers, I have downloaded the driver (smartfon.inf) and tried to direct it to the disk also to install, and it says the specified location doesn't contain any information about the hardware. I thought maybe it was my computer and so I tried it on a different computer and it said the same thing. So I am assuming it is an error on my part. Is there another way to do it or manually or something?
Thanks for any ideas.

use the driver that came on the CD you got with the phone.

I tried. It does not detect it as a modem. I put it to my cd drive and nothing comes up.

Ok, well I use BT connection for my modem so let me try to do it by cable. Also if you have BT on your computer you can use BT Dial Up to use your phone as a modem

Put the Motorola CD in your drive, close the window that apears, double click on My Computer. Right click on the optical drive that has the Motorola disk, and select explore. Notice Smartfon, and take note to its path.

On the MPx 220, go to Start, Acessories, Modem link:

Connection: USB

Menu, Enable: now plug in your data cable

It should ask you to locate the driver information. Do what you have normally done from here and it should work, it did for me. The name of the driver is Motorola Wireless USB Modem.

Go to Device Manager under System under Control Panel on your computer, make sure you do a modem querry so that your phone will connect to cingulars wap network.

Here is what you need to do after you get the modem installed.

Start, Control Panel, System, click the Device Manager Tab

(make sure you phone is on Modem Link and that it is active and the data cable is pluged in, if you don't do this you won't see Motorola Wireless USB Modem under Modems in Device Manager)

Right click on Motorola Wireless USB Modem, and select properties. Click on the Advanced Tab, and in the Extra Intitialization Comands type the following:
+CGDCONT=1."IP","WAP.CINGULAR"

Create a new dial up connection, follow the screens below:

Click on Create a new connection

Click Next, and click Set up my connection manually, click Next

Click Connect using a dial-up modem, click Next.

Select Modem-Motorola Wireless USB Modem, Click Next

Finish the rest of the set up wizard, in Phone Number filed put *99# Click Next:

User Name: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM

Password: CINGULAR1

Uncheck both boxes, unless you want them checked, click Next, Finish

Now the final step, In Network Connections, right click on the new connection you made and select properties, click the Networking tab and under Type of dial-up server I am calling: select SLIP:Unix Connection and then click OK

Right click on the new connection you made and click dial, and it should work! (It did for me) good luck

Hahahaha, oh well I guess any one else who needs to know how to set up the MPx 220 as a modem will see the tutorial I made lol

It's an awesome tutorial. I'm not using my phone in that capacity right now but if I find myself traveling more in the near future I certainly will. Not a wasted effort and it's a nice piece of work.

I cant get it to work under your settings. I keep getting error 692, there was a hardware failure in the modem. I used the settings you provided, and I just dont get it. Help!

I cannot check the actual settings now; however, I believe I had the same issue and disabling Hardware Flow Control resolved the error. Please post your results. If this does not work, I will check my settings to see if there was anything else I changed.

Good luck.
