How to use an IRC Fserv, more particularly, #phonephreakz fserv's

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I figured since there are so many questions about this, I'd create a thread so nobody has to ask anymore:

TOC:
1. - Connectiong to a channel
2. - Triggers
2.A - Messages
3. - To use a trigger
3.A - Reasons for failed DCC Connections
4. - Browsing an fserv
5. - Reasons for failed file sends

1. Getting Connected
First thing you need is an IRC Client. mIRC is a great client, very simple and easy to use. Once you've installed mIRC, you can simply type "/server irc.xxxxx.xxx" to connect to a server, and then "/join #channel" to join a channel. mIRC allows you to also connect by clicking an "irc://" protocal link (such as the one in my signature).

2. Triggers

Next, you need a trigger. A trigger generally starts with a ! then followed by the trigger. (!trigger) In #phonephreakz, triggers are advertised regularly. There is NO !list or any sort of index like that. You will be automatically kicked for those. So just be patient.

2.A
Messages are very important. They are the last part of the trigger, but often times contain vital information to that fserv.

3. typing the trigger

Type the trigger into the channel. You will recieve a "DCC Chat" Request. DCC means Direct Computer Connection. Accept this request.

3.A
A Failed DCC Chat request can occur for several reasons. Some fserv's only operate on one port for reasons covered later, so if someone is on the fserv, you can't get on. Second, the max numbers of users have been reached. That's a limitation to all fserv's. Third, your end. If your ports are not fowarded properly, or such, you can fail to recieve the connection.

4. Browsing the fserv

To browse an fserv, you need only simple dos commands. These commands are pretty standard, and include:

dir: display all contents of the current directory

cd..: this (only the cd.. part, not the : part) changes the current directory to the directory that's one higher.

cd ________: Changes the current directory to "________"

get filename: this is how you recieve a file, get filename.rar or whatever the filename is. You can highlight the file and then hit control + v to make it simpler for you. It's better that way for larger file names, such as "TRIPLETS_G_0B.08.8F5R_VA_LP0039_JPG_0B_TRIP_0B_01. 05R_SE7402AXXE30BE_1FF.shx" (it would suck to try to type that out before it times out)

5. Reasons for failed file sends

There are several reasons for a failed. The most common for our channel is failing to read the "Message" on the fserv advertisement. If the message does not work for you, then you need to open ports up for a file to be recieved from.
