v220 (128x128) WinXP Skin (work in progress)

I'm working on a 128x128 version of the WindowsXP skin, and have a pretty good lil bit done... just wanted to post some pics, get some feedback, and see if any other v220 (or other 128x128 moto phones) users might want this when I'm done...

Here is a pic of the main screen (sorry for the quality)...


and a closer view of the top of the screen, since that one's hard to see

custom startup/shutdown logos (they are animated, but I don't wanna post the .gif's til I'm done with them)




I also converted the startup/shutdown sounds from windows and set them as custom startup/shutdown sounds...

So anyone interested in this style?

how are you able to change the settings? like what steps involved and what files need to be replaced or altered? very interested on making my own, you know, keeping it personal. looks awsome though i will definatly use you as a resourse if you dont mind.

you have to do some seem editing to activate custom styles, then you can create a custom style in the software p2k style... then write that to your phone. ( great information here: http://www.xlr8.us/hofo/ )
i made my background in photoshop... removing the carrier logo is optional, but i set mine all the way to the left so it wouldn't be so obvious as to how i was hiding it.
to activate custom startup/shutdown animations and sounds, you can use the program MotoKit, but after you've done that, you'll need to change the name of the custom start-up mp3 from 'Start~Up.mp' to 'Cust_Start~Up.mp3'...
that's pretty much what you do..
Editing the outer LCD logo is real easy, just see the webpage linked at the beginning of this message.

just be sure to backup your phone before you do any editing.

Easy, just wait a few more days and I'm gonna post at least 2 different XP themes, and maybe this MacOS one I'm working on (if it doesn't irritate me to the point of insanity)... and offer some choices of startup/shutdown screens and sounds. I'll also make a guide for installing the color style on your phone, and include some .mp3 converted windows sounds to use for Text message notifications and voicemail notifications... good stuff!

hey how do you get the sounds activated in custstartup and shutdown? i got the animations down pretty good except how do you get rid of the hellomoto flower in the begining of the startup sequence? any help is appreciated

can't change the moto screen, at all.

and the startup and shutdown is easy to change, just get Moto Kit and go to StartUp&Shutdown and pick your files u wanna use...

then, only the shutdown will work... so look on your phone and in the sounds menu, rename Start~Up.mp3 to Cust_Start~Up.mp3 and you're in business.

Take all the time you need !!! This is a totaly awesome work of art !!!

I for one gave up on having a windows look on my V 220. I was so depresed I was thinking of going and getting a Razor so I could use the windows skins , since it looked like I made a bad buy on phones.

Thank you yt !!!! You just made alot of people very happy

I am trying to follow you, but it's like trying to follow a person in an underground cave, I'm looking for the bread crumbs

If I can manage to learn from you, I would love to work with you on some skin designs.

I'm a newbe to phones, but an old hand in the PDA feild. I cut my teeth on a Casio BE300. Which if you have ever seen as a stock unit, it's ugly and basic as heck.

Now I mainly work on Windows Media Player skins for the Pocket PC



Now the last example deals with the love I have for doing what others say can't be done. Nothing gives me more pleasure then posting up news that what "experts" say can't be done is in fact false.
IAStyle, makers of the IADialer that comes with an Audiovox RTM 8000, said the BE300 was not worth the time of day and their app was "too much" for such a little unit.
I guess they never realized just how badly I wanted to show them as wrong


So now being told some time ago that the XP skins would not work on the V220, got me down.

Till now!!!


I hope the proccess of working out the details and walk through are not giving you too much stress. But if you need any help with graphics I'm here to try and help you.

yeah, GreyWolf, the buttons are blended into the background. I just have the two colors of the standard bottom bar that would appear right there set to completely opaque.

Do you have photoshop? I can get together a .psd file of the screen layout, and it makes the design really easy...

also, if you AIM, you could holler at me on there and we could probably get something done

if so, the s/n is mentholated43

Thanks for posting the rest of those... I like that Mac Classic OS theme, but the apple ruins it... you can't hide the little menu button that's usually right there, and until I or someone figures out how (if it's even possible at all), I can't make any skins that have a button different than the standard moto menu button.

And I'm also trying to learn about icon editing, searches on this forum have turned up little to nothing... if anyone has any links with any type of info (for ANY vXXX phone, I'll adapt it to the v220) please post it here!

I'm going to finish up the skin MotoXP and try to get it posted ASAP... Even if only two people use it, it's better than making it for no reason!

Look in 'Skin' files for the different icons. If you know what the icon names are in the Vxxx series: (180-220-400-505-600) and where to find them on the phones software, you might be able to rename the new icons to the old icon names and put them back. Remember that the new icons need to be the the same size as the old ones, to make sure the will work. In Theroy.

I will keep this thread in mind if I find anything.

I have photoshop, Microsoft Pictureit and Paint, Photo Suite and a few others.

I have to get a few apps to make animated gifs but I am getting there.

I also added you to AIM so if you see footdemon thats me

Now I am seeing all the additions djdownhill gathered for us in one spot and it has me drooling like a dog.

Ok I've noticed a slight shift when you do the clock face ahead of time. So I have tried to adjust for it....I am almost dead on.


So now I guess I have to attempt turning the color theme opaque.....

Any tips?

You will need a program called P2Kstyle v0 5.0.0 and you will have to download the spcolor file from your phone. I think it's in the a/mobile/system directory on p2kman form your phone open it up with the P2kstyle program and edit it from there to make it clear so you can see the bottom XP stlye toolbar at the bottom of the screen. It also lets you put a backround in it while you are adjusting the spcolor to see what it will look like on your phone. Make sure you make a back up of the spcolor so if you mess up you will have a backup to fix it.

Both the P2Kstyle & spcolor files can be found on:
www.motomodders.net Sign up is free. (look in the downloads section) there is alot of stuff in this section so look in all the sections. these 2 things are in there.

I have it all in the phone, but still the original stuart up sound plays.

Is there a step missing?

What did you use or how did you rename the file?

rename the mp3 to:

Cust_Start~Up.mp3 Spelled exactly like this!!

All ready got it named, still not playing. Thats why I think I missed something.

Greywolf, looks like you're coming along nicely... did you get your bottom menu bar opaque yet?

There's a step in that process that I don't think anyone's mentioned... enabling custom color style.
All you need to do is edit seem 0032_0001, offset 53, bit 6... then you'll actually be able use to the spcolor.sch file... or, if you want, I can give you a pre-modified spcolor.sch file that has most of the changes already made.

gon hook up my webcam in a few mins and take some pics of the themes i'm workin on now... check back

hey id like to show you guys what i've come up with but how do i post multiple pics on here without multiple posts? do i need to host them somewhere or can i just grab them off my hard drive. i see the "IMG" button under the size section but when i preview my post i only see the path on my hard drive. and the "attach file" size is way too small for my pics. i tried reducing the size but i could barely see them that small. what am i doing wrong?!

you can upload your images to a host, like www.imageshack.us

and no, I don't believe there's any way to change the font, short of flashing/flexing (maybe), something I haven't really gotten into.

YT I am going slow right now, I want to master each step as I go. Like I said before I am knowledgeable in Pocket PC/Windows CE, but all this SEEM editing has me nervous.

Much like I was when I first attempted Registry Editing on my Casio BE 300. I thought I had killed my BE on that one when it locked up on boot up with a blank black screen.

I must say between yourself, dj, and the many more brave and smart moto hackers, you all are leaving well thought out and easy instruction for slower thicker skulled people such as myself

I'll be trying for the see through bar this weekend as work has me tied down till friday morning.

The .psd is just for use during the design process... saves plenty of time by making it possible to preview exactly what it will look like on the phone instead of putting the file on your phone over and over again... just make all the layer sets invisibile and Save To Web... when you get ready to put it on your phone...

hmm... I may have stumbled upon something.

I was playing around with my menu file (mma_ucp) in P2K Menu Editor, and I enabled Video in the 0032_0001 seem... then added Video to my media menu.

After rebooting my phone... I notice my soft keys have changed to Styles and Camera, where it was Camera and Settings.

I press the menu button and I see:


The cingular-branded icons are gone! But everything still works!

Anyone heard of anything like this happening when activating video via the 0032_0001 seem and adding it to the mma_ucp?

how do you edit the mma_ucp file? i know where it is but how do you add video in the menu's. didnt really understand xlr8's tutorial when i was reading it

get p2k menu editor and it's plain as day... and a reminder that this does NOT make your phone capable of recording video, just playing it (to my knowledge, at least)...

just download 0032_0001.seem and mma_ucp from your phone...

now launch P2K Menu Editor

=Let's activate the video feature first=

Browse to the 'SEEM 0032:0001 menu' tab
Click 'Open', and point to the 0032_0001.seem file you got off your phone with p2kman.



There's what we're looking for. Just click to Enable.



Ok, now SAVE.

=Let's add Video to the phone's menus=

Browse to the 'Phone Menu Tree' tab.
Click 'Open', and point to the mma_ucp file you got off your phone with p2kman.



Highlight one of the submenus under multimedia (I'm using 'Pictures' in my example, so just do that and make things simple )

Now click Insert Item.


There, we have a new menu item. Now just do this to make it a Video menu.


You can put it whereever you want, I *think* the OEM placement would be like this:


now SAVE on this tab!

close p2k menu editor... start up p2kman, and upload your new mma_ucp and 0032_0001.seem files. Restart... Enjoy!

How much movement can be had with the clock ( digi, and analog), the provider? I know they can be moved off screen so they don't show at all.

Can we active the date? Have the formated date display like say the Razor? If Yes....moveable?

I was at work last night and I had a vision in my head for a simple skin.

Now also what are the exact dimentions of the screen? I know we are making skins in 128 by 128, but can we make the wallpaper any closer to the screen dimentions?

Well, I don't know HOW to move the Op Logo... all the tutorials I've ever seen for it involve the Moto Skin program and .ski files, which we know the v220 doesn't support... so I'm clueless there, but I am looking into it.

And the wallpaper IS 128x128, but I'm sure you can tell that the phone stretches the wallpaper vertically, tho I'm not sure how much. Still trying to work out all these details.

Everyone's work is looking great, I'm thinking of getting another Moto phone just so I can make some skins for a different phone too... keep postin your work!

Figured I'd pop in and show my first attempt as well. This is just a screenshot from P2KStyle, so it's not exactly what it looks like. I'm still not happy with it...mainly cause the dragon looks like crap. not as bad as it looks in the screenie, but still not great.



I'm trying to map out where the analog clock fits on your .PSD, yt. Then I'll make a better wallpaper with the clock background too.

I'm pretty sure no one has found a way to move the operator logo on a v220 yet or remove it either without breaking the function keys.

I would think you should be able to use YT's walkthrough. If I am not mistaken a V180 is basicly a V220 with no camera or video player.

Hey all! I've been playing with my v220 now that I've come across this thread and I love it. I wanted to show appreciation to those here for posting newbie-friendly guides. Has anyone Flashed or Flexed their v220? If so, what is the best? I went more into detail on another thread... http://howardforums.com/showthread....threadid=603041 but no one ever replies to my postings Also, I have a pretty big problem now... I got rid of some files through MotoKit and not MPT says my phone doesn't have a modem. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Rather than making specific screens for each phone, I'm just gonna replace those startup/shutdown gifs with ones that say MotoXP (since i call my themes that) is shutting down/starting up

amen to that!! ive been concidering it but the cons still outway the pros. cant find a good enough reason to flash or flex yet. i have some flashes and flexes if anybody wants copies. i haven't tried them out yet nor do i know how yet so use at your own risk but if someone wants them let me know and pm me thier email and ill sent it.

Myself, I would say avoid flex/flash. What can be gained?

I would stick to just the basics, YT's walkthrough to pretty it up, and a few seem edits. Maybe remove the video player and video if you need the room.

If your V220 crashes fine then try it. As I was led to believe it's not like we can push this phone up to a V3. So I don't see an upside.
