Do I need the data cable to use the EVRC code?

I searched, but couldn't find anything specific to this question...when I enter the EVRC code for my SE47, I get the "phone --> computer" graphic for a couple of seconds, then the phone power cycles. It looks like it wants a data cable (which I don't have yet) between my phone and my computer. Has anyone tried it and had any luck? Thanks.
Edit: it does the same thing with both codes, with no other indication of what it's expecting. If I do get a data cable, what software should I be running on my PC while I do this?

mine just says 'evrc code incorrct' when i try to enter that part
i also tried the field service code and the one-time subsidiary lock code that i ganked off the phone using kwpst, but neither of those were accepted either
theorically you shouldnt have to change anything to do with evrc... its just about the encoding mechinism between your phone and the tower...
i dont think a data cable is needed. that icon simply indicates the phone is in data-mode and if it reboots right away, then it has completed what its doing in data-mode.
