How many people are using BT ActiveSync?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I use it all the time, I use a program called BTAutoSync to do it for me at set intervals. Does anyone else do this and if so what are you experiences with using BT ActiveSync.

Posted by: jleecong

Set it up but found that the BT was not reliable. It would work one day but not the next.

I ran into big problem when I went from XP SP1 to SP2 with my BT dongle so that could have been some of the cause.

When I had an iPaq I constantly had a sync connection over BT with so I could surf or get emails at the pool.

I love BT syncing!! I have had no problems using it once I set it up. I think some people who are trying it for the first time forget that to activate it you need to use the phone and click connect via BT and It will commence to connect!!!

Posted by: ChrisFB

I tried it for a bit with a long range BT adapter. Well, the phone's BT wasn't a match for the adapter so I wound up having to be in my office to have it synch reliably anyway. Nothing outside 15' reliabily even though the adapter had a 100m range. I opted to go back to the USB cable since I had to be at my desk anyway. Plus, I think the speed was slower because BT works via the Serial connection in Activesynch and if I'm not mistaken this slows it down a bit. For some people I'm sure their desired use matches a bit better but I returned the adapter for my $ back.

I can not!
Tried almost everything mentioned in this forum.
I have WinXP SP2 and MSI Bluetooth dongle.
Nothing worked so far.

still trying though..

If you're having trouble connecting try to get updated drivers for your bluetooth adapter. Many of the older adapters don't work with XP SP2. I have an HP laptop with built in bluetooth and once I updated to the latest drivers it worked perfectly. I also have an IBM Thinkpad T43 with integrated bluetooth and it worked out of the box.

Posted by: Omega2008

I use BT ActiveSync all the time its very reliable and easy to use. It took a while to get it to work, I had it working with SP2 Bluetooth stack then I hacked some widcomm drivers and got more from my BT dongle. Since I got the widcomm drivers to work I have had no problems at all. Yes its a little bit slower but not that much to me anyways and its range is fine for me its not wi-fi but it works for me. I also use BT to use my phone as a modem or to use internet pass through so that I can surf the web on my phone with out using GPRS data.

I am already using the latest drivers for SP2, this is what they say on driver download page:

"Notice:
Currently there are two kinds of drivers for MSI MS-6967 dongle installation:

A. MSI driver Please click here
B. Microsoft driver only for XP_SP2 OS (Do not support AV profile & Headset profile). Please click here "

I am using the one for XP_SP2 OS..

The problem is the post numbers never match between active sync and bluetooth settings.
In Bluetooth settings the com ports starts from 20 and goes up, I cannot get a smaller port number, but in Activesync the port numbers are shown from 1>9, so I cannot select the same port numbers at all.

Count me in, too! That did it!!! Thanks a million! I spent hours last week trying to do Active Sync with BT, and now it finally works!

I think keeping the BT "off" on the phone during the set-up phase did the trick...

Posted by: Brandonjg

I spent a day or so playing with mine but now it seems to work all the time and I love it

Posted by: Brandonjg

Thanks for the BTAutoSync Tip Omega. I installed that this morning and its a very convenient addition.

Posted by: Omega2008

Your welcome.

Is anyone else using a BT connection to teather there phone? I do it with my laptop when I can't get wi-fi access.

Posted by: joeblowstein

Wow! This actually worked. I have spent many, many hours trying to get ActiveSync to work over bluetooth. I knew there was a specific set up steps, but I could never figure it out. Thank you so much for the link to these directions.

Now that ActiveSync works, I want to get it to automatically sync when I am in range. There is the program BTAutoSync SP (http://www.ciscoreload.co.uk/) but it requires that my laptop be in Discover mode all the time, which is a bad thing. I don't see why the laptop needs to be in Discover mode. Why doesn't it just try to sync every few minutes, without having to first discover the laptop via bluetooth?

I also read that you could do this via the repllog.exe command that exists in the /windows/ folder of the smartphone. I tried this but it didn't work.

I would really like to find a way to trigger the "Connect via Bluetooth" command that exists in the phone's ActiveSync application. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

You need to write a program to get that to happen.

I use Activesync via BT all the time....it works great. Even if it is a little slower, I don't have to have the phone sitting right in front of my computer. I ran into a problem with an older BT dongle (made by Ambicom) where it wouldn't work after I installed SP2...but I bought a newer BT dongle and all is well...

Posted by: Mark Larson

I was going to, but since the USB cable charges my phone at the same time, I didn't bother to set it up. USB is much faster than BT anyway

Posted by: sunsurfh2o

Sorry if this is off-topic but you guys definately are the ones using your BT so you may be the best collection of members to ask: On boot-up or after cycling out of Flight Mode, the BT adapter is set to "Discoverable" every time; this happens even when BT was turned off as the phone powered down or cycled through Flight Mode. Never experienced this until this week. At the moment I have no use for BT and keep it off for safety as well as battery consumption concerns BUT it comes on by itself!!!

Posted by: Omega2008

When you activate Flight Mode it turns off all radios, both GSM and BT. If you turn Flight Mode off it will activate both radios no matter if you had BT on when you activated Flight Mode or not. That is how it works on my phone.

If it didn't do this before than I am guessing it was an error on the phone. In either case, when you turn Flight Mode off , make sure you go and turn BT off if you don't want it on.

If I have BT on when I turn off my phone, then BT will be activated when I turn the phone back on, however if I turn BT off and turn the phone off, it will be off when I turn it back on.

Sync with BT everyday without issue on SP2 but it does mean i get my emails before i even get to my desk

I don't use BT and don't get the same behavior switching in and out of flight mode as Omega describes. My BT is never on, whether cycling out of flight mode or rebooting. Go figure.

Is anyone worried about catching a virus via BT? Does turning off "Discoverable" keep you relatively safe?

Posted by: Omega2008

I don't worry about a virus for two reasons. One because if the phone is not in discoverable mode then its hard and nearly impossiable to recieve a virus and two if I did get a virus. I would just hard rest my phone and put restore my backup file that is on my computer.

Wirelessly posted (MPX220: MOT-MPx220/0.342 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows CE; Smartphone; 176x220))

I'll use BT to sync on the road, USB at home. Laptop tethering on the road as well. As long as you don't leave BT in 'discoverable', you've nothing to worry about. Even then, the worst that can happen(right), is you'll get bluejacked.

In ActiveSync click on Tools, Options, click the Sync Options tab, and un check the box beside Email.

That way it won't download your messages.

There are no virus for the Smartphone as of now, ( or that I know of or feel theatened from) mainly because its not worth the effort of a virus writter. Virus writers want to make a big scene, so they will more than likely target a Windows XP machine than a smartphone. Not to say that I virus couldn't happen but as long as you back up your phone and keep a back up or your ROM image than nothing can hurt your phone. Its just like Norton Ghost on a computer, if a virus strikes I just pop in the Norton Ghost Emergency recovery disk, and pop in my harddrives image on my DVD-R and voila, computer up in running in a matter of minutes.

I haven't tried BT sync yet. I do use IR to sync when I'm away from my desk and don't have the USB cable. Its slower but not bad. Does anyone know how the speed of BT compares to IR?

Posted by: Omega2008

BT is about a 1/3 faster than IR

Bluetooth sync works great on my SMT 5600 using BT Autosync, but I've noticed some strange behavior when switching between BT and USB sync without changing the advanced settings for the port in ActiveSync:

- If I have it set for BT, and plug in the USB cable, it starts charging, but the AS connection never starts. Unplug, then plugin again, and windows says the USB device has malfunctioned. If you look in AS, it changed the connection port to USB though. I have to restart the phone to make it work.
- If I have it set for BT and want to use USB and I MANUALLY change the port setting from BT to USB, then the sync works fine.

Is there a way to make the switch between BT and USB automatic?

Posted by: Omega2008

I never had that problem, as long as I used BTAutoSync to discconect the BT connection and then plug it into the USB data cable. I recommend you wait at least 30 seconds after you disconnect the BT connection. I do this to make sure that the BT connection had enough time to fully terminate. See if this works for you.

Posted by: mskovrinskie

I tried waiting a while between BT syncs, and it still does it. I only have it set to sync every 60 minutes now.

So are you saying that you can move your phone between USB and BT and have it work without changing any settings in AS?

Posted by: Omega2008

On the MPx 220 I can. I don't have this problem. I used to have a SMT 5600 but I never used BT ActiveSync with it.

When I do a BT ActiveSync and then I disconnected it takes 20 seconds for the connection to drop (e.g I hear the ActiveSync dissconnection sound on my computer). Then after hearing that sound, I put it in the cradle and ActiveSync fires up and syncs with no problem.

By the way I am using the Widcomm BT drivers.

I change no settings within ActiveSync on the computer or the phone.

Posted by: Brandonjg

Ive had similar issues getting the USB sync to work after BT syncs. I've just allowed it to BT sync all the time. I just use the USB cable for charging. Yeah the xfer rate is slower through BT than active sync but it doesnt bother me. There isnt that much data being transferred

Hello all,

I am using ActiveSinc via BT very much and it works like a charm! Since I like to auto-sync via BT and don't want to push "sync via BT" in the menu, I have installed AutoSinc SP. BUT... this won't work for some reason... I constantely get the following alert:

"AutoSync not possible. Please ensure ActveSync connection type is set to Bluetooth."

Pretty weird, because I've set my Bluetooth partner to my desktop and if I connect manually with the "sync via BT" in the ActiveSync menu it works...!! I also have restarted my phone & computer but still... not the works... What am I doing wrong...

Thanks for your help

Posted by: Brandonjg

check this setting:
In ActiveSync on the phone, choose Menu -> Options -> PC Settings -> Menu -> Advanced
On the Advanced settings dialog, you should have 2 options. Make sure the "Enable PC sync using this connection type" is checked and that the second option is set to "Bluetooth AS" instead of "USB"

Posted by: hvz

I took half year to set uo bluetooth activesync Please note that i didnt try to set up connection everyday .. But maybee once a week.
Now its working and i love it.!!

You are... THE MAN!!!

In other words... it is working like a charm!

Messed witht is for about an hour one night using Omega's blog, never got it to work. My cables stays conected to the PC and I pretty much always have my phone with me, so it's no big deal. I really have no need to sync daily either.

Posted by: Omega2008

Are you using the widcomm drivers? Did you set up the correct BT Serial Ports (low number, same com number reflected in ActiveSync settings)

Also with the 3.45 and 3.46 ROM you could try this:

Start, Settings, ActiveSync, Menu, Options, PC Settings, Menu, Advanced:

Make sure you scroll to USB and change to Bluetooth AS

Posted by: TruBlu01

Yeah, I did all of that. I'm using a Linksys BT USB Adapter that has Widcomm drivers installed. Like I mentioned no big deal. I'm still deciding if I want to make the switch to 3.45, I was not aware of a 3.46.

Posted by: Omega2008

Yes 3.46 is the newest one however none has really noticed a big difference between 3.45 and 3.46...

Posted by: Troxelke

Today I walked into my room and I noticed that my Laptop began to work... HELP!! God ****... it's the BT AutoSync... It works like a charm!

Only it is a bit laborious that I constantly have to enable the outgoing comport 6 if I rebooted my phone... and also sometimes it is necessary to re-pair the computer / phone which costs more time than just putting the USB cable...

This is also the problem when connecting to my BT GPS receiver... does anyone know how to permanently fix these connections in my phone?

Thanks in advance...
