650 to Verizon ?!?!?!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: yuhoo22

I read on the phonescoop forum that Verizon will be launching the Treo 650 in April.....

Any truth to this? What will the price be?

Also, my contract is up in July, do I still qualify for the promo prices if I resign and add my mom to the plan?

Posted by: yuhoo22

bump???

Someone now posted they saw the promo card at a circuit city kiosk?

Posted by: Zu818

Im not sure I quit nextel to got verizon and got the new LG phone and then I found out about the Treo 650 and asked them if they were gonna carry it. no one could give me a definative answer. So a week later i quit Verizon and went to Sprint for the 650 and I am very much pleased. Although I hate that Sprint will be merging with NExtel. I hate Nextel the bastards.

Posted by: yuhoo22

Just got back from a Verizon store on my lunch break.....a sales rep said they were told that it would arrive in the Spring. He seemed pretty reasonable, in that he told me that it could be coming out anytime from today through October. He said that he has been working there for 9 years and usually they don't have a creditable time frame, but if they were told it was coming that it will come out by the end of the year.

Anyone hear any dates? Prices?

anywhere from Q2, 05/24/2005, on...

I quit Sprint and went to Cingular. VERY happy. I called Verizon and told them I was going to port over if they couldn't give me a better time frame. They wouldn't even acknowledge that they even planned to carry it. So I left.

Verizon doesn't see the need to make an announcement at all. I guess they don't mind losing customers to other networks who roll out products in a timely manner.

Posted by: si4u2nv

yea, i wanna know if VZW is gonna be carrying the 650. my friend work at the verizon store, im gonna stop in tomorrow and talk to him. my new every 2 comes due on the 5th of april, and if he can promise me a time frame, ill hold out if its not too awful long. if i fiond out any credible info from him, ill post it up on here. BTW, is it possible to get an unlocked 650 and have it put on VZW's system?

Posted by: yuhoo22

I hear it is possible, but that some capabilties don't work? Also that customer care will not acknowledge if you have any problems with service unless its a phone they support.

They just dropped the 600's price by another $50, so it's only $150 after rebates.
Looks like VZW is trying to free up some inventory space, wonder what for?

Where did you get that price from? It's still $249 on Verizons site with the rebate...

There's an ad in Wed's USA Today business section.

Yeah I just saw it.. Looks like I'm going back to Verizon to return it.

Posted by: revhendrix

Can you give us some more info on the ad in USA today concerning the drop in Palm Treo 600 price...? Is is a coupon or a date sensitive Verizon ad??

I'm courious becuase I just bought the Treo 600 (10 days ago)and I'm thinking of returning it and waiting for the 650. The price drop may make my decision easier to wait as I expect they're cleaning out the 600s.

Thanks...

Posted by: patchs

It wasn't a coupon, can't remember if there was an expiration date. I'll look later when I get home from work.

"Limited time offer, while supplies last."
I'm glad I didn't toss that out.

Move out the 600s and bring in the 650s!

patchs.......thanks for the reply.

Was it a Verizon ad or an independent store??

Posted by: patchs

A VZW ad, not for a store, it's a national ad.
If you want to see it. go to www.newsstand.com, download their reader, pay $.75 and download Thurs' paper. The ad is in the money section, towards the back.

well, bad news guys. i talked to my buddy and another guy at the VZW store and they got on the "special employee website" and showed me that VZW has "no plans" to release the 650 on their service. the reason for this being is that the 650 doesnt support broadband access and VZW wants all of their smartphones to be broadband capable. but, they did let me in on a little secret that palm is currently developing a new device that will support broadband and has everything that the 650 has, and it should be gettin debuted sometime in the spring or summer. so, im kinda undecided as to whether to go ahead and get the 600 or wait for the "new" device, well just call it the T-700 for now, since thats the way it seems to be goin. so, theres the update that i said i was gonna give, sorry for the wait.

My VZW contract runs out May 19. If there isn't any legitimate news of a new Treo by then, it will be, "A Cingular, I will go, a Cingular I will go, Hi-ho, the Treo, a Cingular I will go."

Posted by: UncleDannie

I, too, had heard of a new Treo. PalmOne is supposedly making a Treo 670 with Bluetooth, enhanced everything, but runs with MS Moble2003 OS. This new phone, if true, will be the 'smoking gun' for Verizon. It will be a MUST HAVE item. I have the Treo 600 and use a Dell A50 PDA, and I just love the MS 2003 OS, althougth the PalmOS 5 series is pretty nice also.

This new phone has been talked about in a couple of forums, so the 'rumor' might have some truth in it.

I hope this is just a bad dream, or a time warp... and VZW has something up their sleeve...

More fuel to the fire guys!!! Coincidence??? I think not!!!

mytreo.net site news Wednesday, March 30, 2005
mytreo.net is very pleased to announce that we're now shipping the Verizon Treo smartphones! Treo 600 model is available now, and the Treo 650 will be available soon.

Must stay calm, must not get hopes up.
I bet this came out because I visited a Cingular store today and asked about the 650.

Posted by: Son93sl2

I am on the trial period of the Treo 600 right now, so far so good, I really like this phone. I will return this before my 15 days is up, I hope more concrete news of the 650 will be available...

From the people I have talked to, they have not heard a peep about the 650.

Okay guys, I come bearing fantastic news!

It's official, the Treo 650 is going to be released by Verizon, it's just that the customer service reps are either being tight-lipped about it, or they really have no idea.

But I was at a Verizon store a few days ago and spoke with a rep who gave me a lot more information than he was supposed to. He told me off the record, that they already received the placard cards for the display models for the Treo 650, and Verizon has been dropping the price on the T600 in order to clear out their inventory to make room for it.

I asked him what the ETA was on the 650, and he told me that usually they receive the placard cards about a month before they receive the actual units themselves. I asked him if I could actually see one of the placards with my own eyes because I've been getting conflicting reports up the yin-yang form so many reps in the past. This is the same rep whom I said before seemed like the only one who seemed to know what the hell he was talking about and was very knowledgeable on the tech side of things.

He discretely got up and excused himself with a wink to me and went to the back to the storeroom and returned moments later with the placard for the 650 discretely hidden away in his hand. He slipped it to me and when I held it in my own two hands and read it, I almost passed out!!!!!!!!

It was true!!!! He was telling me the truth! I had proof in my very hands!

I "borrowed" the placard and slipped into the bathroom at the Verizon store and snapped a few photos with my 3.2 mega-pixel digi-cam to post up here for you guys.

I also made sure to take a close up picture of the bottom of the placard in order to prove to you guys it was no hoax and that it was indeed going to be offered by Verizon.

I've got a question for you guys, can the 650 screen be switched back and forth from portait and landscape view?
Here is the actual placard from the Verizon store with their patented signature colours showing that they will be offering the Treo 650!

Finally, I think we can breath a sigh of relief!

Enjoy guys and let the fervor begin!

PS. I tried attaching the pictures here but it wouldn't let me do so because it kept telling me that the file sizes were to big. I had posted this info in another forum so I'm just going to link you guys to the pics there. Sorry about that.

I clicked on the links. The Verizon Treo 650 has a MEGAPIXEL camera?

I'll believe it when I see it. :-) Nothing about EV-DO though. Hmm....wondering.

Posted by: Alpha Phoenix

Is there a way to get the 650 to toggle back and forth from portrait to landscape view the way the Tungsten T5 can? That would suck if there wasn't an app that could do that and you were stuck in portrait view all the time.

Posted by: cwosigns

While technically a rectangle, the display is more of a square than the T5. You wouldn't gain that much by switching to landscape mode.

Posted by: patchs

Alpha Phoenix,
If this is true, then thank you very much for this great info!
I posted a link on treocentral.com's VZW forum.
It really is coming soon.

Posted by: si4u2nv

so, what r we expecting the ETA of this to be, about may 3rd? i think i might not bother waiting, cuz im still not sure if i wanna pay like $500 for a phone. i kinda like the whole $200 sound of the 600.

Posted by: howhao

did you get the whole "feature" part on the placecard?

not only does it not mention EV-DO, but it didn't mention BT either.

Posted by: FlyPenFly

Internet explorer and dual 65k lcd screen? eh, i say fake.

Posted by: mcevoys

Verizon Accounces Treo 650 to be offered

w00t! Woo-hoo!

See, I told you guys it was true!!!!!!

But probably not with the specs that seemed fake.

Posted by: howhao

without EV-DO and BT, that thing is crippled. i'm holding out for the i730

Posted by: si4u2nv

well, i went to the VZW store this morning to get my treo 600 and asked them about the 650 just for fun, and they said they didnt think it was coming onto the VZW network, and then i whipped out my printed out version of the 650 VZW flier, and they were like, well, thats news to us, we didnt think we were going to be gettin it.

Posted by: sevn11

I went to the local verizon store in central ohio to inquire about the treo 650....What a joke. First of all they didnt even know how to pronounce "treo" ....I think it was something like "treeeeea". More important- they didnt even know about the announcement on the verizon website. At that point why bother asking about bluetooth or any features that may or may not be crippled. Hurry up verizon!

Posted by: UncleDannie

Just my 2cents, but Verizon never will implement full bluetooth functions. I had a v710 before getting my Treo600, and it was crippled on that phone. There is a lawsuit against Verizon at present over this crippling. If the lawsuit prevails, Verison will either release full functioning or offer a store coupon for a rebate, or allow customers to return their phones and get out of their contracts. Probably the Treo 650 may be added to the class-action lawsuit. Who knows for sure? I don't.

The first pic says the Treo 650 has dual screens. It's a candybar phone with one screen.

Posted by: SuzzyP

Go to www.mytreo.net they are taking PRE orders for the Verizon 650 369.99 after a 100 loyalty discount..... they do not say when they are shipping, but it has to be fairly soon if they are taking orders.

Posted by: mcevoys

From mytreo.net:

"We currently only offer the Treo 650 to customers establishing new Verizon Wireless service"

Posted by: SuzzyP

So there you have it .... Verizon is finally going to carry the 650....

better late than never

What are you talking about with regard to the crippling of Bluetooth? Are you telling me this was an intentional thing on Verizon's part? If so, why would they do that?

Posted by: howhao

confirmed: VZW 650 has no EV-DO, and is coming out by the end of the month.

How and where did you come by this information? Any links to official info you can post up?

Can someone please explain to me the whole crippling of Bluetooh thing? Why did Verizon do this? Do the Sprint and Cingular models have Bluetooth crippled as well?

Why is ED-VO not going to be on the phone and what exactly is that and does it do?

Posted by: howhao

i cannot disclose where the info came from. let's just say at this point this source is as reliable as it gets for this particular matter.

Posted by: Alpha Phoenix

Ooookay. I'll take your workd on it. So we've got a time frame, do we have a release date?

Posted by: UncleDannie

Verison only support bluetooth for the below.
# Headset-for connecting Bluetooth headsets.
# Hands-free-for connecting hands-free car kits.
# Dial-up Networking (DUN)-to allow the handset to be used as a modem.

You can't exchange data with another bluetooth phone, you can't synch and the car kits don't work with all cars. Per verizon Wireless tech people.

Posted by: Alpha Phoenix

Why would they do this? What can they possibly hope to gain by crippling technology that doesn't take anything away from them or cost them anything?

Posted by: rumpole

Of course it takes money out of their pocket. If you can transfer files directly, you don't have to use their messageing system (for which you have to pay) to send photos or midi files.
It's all about the Washingtons baby.

Posted by: Alpha Phoenix

Do the cingular and Sprint models have them enabled?

What if you bought it directly from Palm? Would all those features be enabled? Since Verizon will be relasing the phone on their network in a few weeks (supposedly anyway), could I byuy the full uncrippled version from PalmOne and just activate it through Verizon?

Posted by: dschump

The 650's are comming to Verizon I currently have one for testing purposes and with the speed of verizon;s network it is bueaty will run from 4-700 dollars depending on options with the device

Posted by: dkay

yea right. So does that mean your phone is EV-DO capable? How would you know about the pricing? And what do you mean "options"? If you know about pricing, how about release date? Sorry, can't believe you...how bout a pic of just the screen + verizon logo above it with a bandwidth speed test run? Then MAYBE we'll believe you.

Btw, does ANYONE know anything about whether the VZW Treo 650 will have EV-DO capability? This is a deal-killer for me.

Posted by: mcevoys

>>does ANYONE know anything about whether the VZW Treo 650 will have EV-DO capability? This is a deal-killer for me.

It will not have EV-DO. Sorry to kill your deal.

Posted by: Alpha Phoenix

Okay I have it from one of my inside sources who works at a Verizon Wireless store (the same guy who helped me to get a photo of the placard) that the Treo 650 is being released by Verizon this month. Here are the exact dates I was told and the prices:

May 11th for B2B, in stores on the 23rd.
$400.00 with two year contract, $450.00 with one year contract.
Full price is $529.00.

Rejoice and be merry. The time is nigh!

~Phøenix

Posted by: howhao

the B2B info 5/11 is second-ed.

Posted by: jen_xda

If you upgrade a Cingular locked-Treo 650 to OS ver 1.23, will it unlock it to other networks?

Posted by: Jaharmi

The Cingular Treo is GSM, so it wouldn't work on the Verizon or Sprint network.

Posted by: WiggyFife

So I paid a visit to the Verizon Store in my local Circuit City Shop today after work.

The Lady said that the Release Date for the Treo 650 is May 10th for all channels... not just Business, but Consumers as well. She didn't have the pricing readily available.

She also mentioned that a Data Plan is highly recommended, but not mandatory.

Here's an interesting side note. The Lady said that there will be a promo that will give you an additional $100 off the Treo 650 if you purchase w/ the Unlimited Data Plan. This is IN ADDITION TO the NE2 Discount. I thought I would pass this along to you guys to chew on...

I'm just the messenger, so don't shoot me!!! Cheers!!!

Posted by: Alpha Phoenix

What is this NE2 thing I keep hearing about?

Can that $100 data plan discount offer be coupled with my $100 off towards the upgrade of my handset that I'm entitled to ?

That $100 discount you are entitled to IS NE2! "New Every Two".

Sign and fulfill a 2-year contract of $35 or more a month and you get $100 off your next phone, when you sign another 2-year contract. You have to wait until you are 22 months into the contract to be able to use it.
I've used my NE2 in the past with other rebates (although not a data plan), so I would think it would be OK.
Ex: $200 phone - $100 NE2 - $50 mail-in rebate = $50 phone.
