SIM card question from a newbie...

Forum,
I just bought a Siemens C56 from ebay for use while traveling abroad in Colombia. The phone is unlocked and I believe the frequency is correct, I'll just need a SIM card from COMCEL for use there. I was going to familiarize myself with the features of the phone, but it seems 99% of them won't work without a SIM card installed. No problem, I'll buy one off ebay, they're cheap.
My question is, is there memory on the SIM card, or is it in the phone? I.E., if I program it with a USA SIM card, then swap SIMs later, will everything (numbers, ringtones, etc.) be lost?
Also wondered how you lock one of these phones, in other words I'm assuming as long as you don't enter the "secret" code, it will stay unlocked indefinately?
Thanks in advance, this is all real new to me....

Yes, it should stay unlocked for as long as you want it to (indefinitely). The SIM card issue is different. Numbers, contacts, etc. will be lost unless you save them to the phone memory, not to the SIM card. If you save them to the card, they won't be there when you switch back and forth. Ringtones and graphics and things of that nature are almost certainly safe since they have to be saved to phone memory (no SIM card has that kind of capacity).
