Giving BitPim a try - what to do?

I have a Bell Mobility version of the Sanyo 8100 I have heard mixed things - it works or it doesn't work for ringtones. I don't know if it works sometimes and not others or if people are just getting mixed up. In any case I think I will give it a try. I downloaded Bitpim - do I run it first then plug in the phone. Also should the phone be on or off when I plug it into the USB cable. As well where can I download some free ringtones to try this out?

Well I loaded bitpim and sanyo drivers - then plugged in phone. Uploaded data fine - saved my addy book, pics, ringtones to my computer. Then I went to upload and the options for wallpaper and ringtone were greyed out. Any idea why this would be? Did I do something wrong.
