Bluetooth tethering MPx220 to Pocket PCs

Has anyone succeeded in using the MPx220 as a bluetooth modem for a Pocket PC? I've tried with two devices, a Dell Axim X50 and an HP iPAQ h1945, without success.

These are the settings I have, which work like a charm with a Moto V551, but not with the MPx 220:

Connection Name: Cingular MEdia
Modem: bluetooth dialup modem
Phone number: *99***1# (dialing rules are turned off)
Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM (case sensitive)
Password: CINGULAR1 (case sensitive)
**click advanced tab**
Baud rate: 19200
Wait for dial tone before dialing: Unchecked
Extra dial string: +CGDCONT=1,"IP","WAP.CINGULAR" (case sensitive and that is an O not a zero)
All other settings are left at their default values.

When I try to dial the connection from the Pocket PC, it finds the phone and begins dialing (supposedly), but always returns an error as if it can't find the phone. I've tried setting BT on the phone to On or Discoverable without any difference.

Do I have to use different settings for the MPx220? Thanks.

Try *99# thats what I use. The settings are the same as they are on a computer. Everything looks right. And of course you made sure you paird the phone with the PPC or vise versa?

What is the error message that it gives you?

Everything looks correct unless there is something that we are missing.......

I tried *99# without success. And yes, the phone is paired to both PDAs and I have BT on in both the phone and the PDA while I try it. BTW: My phone came with the 1.30 firmware.

It looks like the PPC won't intialize the MPx 220. There must be a setting that is needed. I will see what I can find. I got this to teather to my former Tungsten T3 without a hitch.

I have been thinking about this. Just wondering what is the cost of a bluetooth dialup modem? If this works i might get it.

I have a Mpx220 and a Nokia 6620. I can pair and log onto the internet all day long on my Ipaq 2215 with the 6620. I have NEVER been able to successfully log on through the Mpx220.

I have the same problem with Tmobile VPN. I can get POP3 email and surf on my MPX 220, but I canot connect my HP 2755 to the net using the MPX 220 as a BT modem. I can do it with my old T39. Has anyone contacted Motorola?

Has anyone been able to connect their MPx220 to a PPC yet? I am still getting an error that the phone cannot be made. I have a Dell axim and checked their forum, but I am still coming up empty.

Thanks.

This should be a sticky for Cingular Bluetooth Tethering between a PPC and the MPX220...

Pair up your devices like normal and use *99# as the phone number. DO NOT USE the Modem Initialization string!!!

After you have setup the base connection, go to your connection settings...

Make sure your username is WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM and PW of CINGULAR1.

Click the Advanced Button.

Set your Baud Rate to 115200. Make sure the "Wait for dialtone before dialing" is unchecked. DO NOT ENTER anything into the Extra dial-string...

Then go to the Port Settings Tab. Make sure that the "Enter Dialing Commands Manually" line is selected.

Save everything and close out of the connection box.

Open up Pocket Word / Notes /etc.

Type in the following:

AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","wap.cingular","",0,0d*99#

Then select the entire line and copy it (either by using the Edit menu or by tapping and holding).

Save that file as something like Bluetooth Dialing String/etc...

Now attempt to connect via Bluetooth. In a moment, you will have a blank screen popup.

Hit Edit -> Paste... Wait until you see the word Connect pop up...

Then select File -> Continue...

Then you should be connected...

I should note that you would need to do the "Copy" dialing string everytime you want to connect via bluetooth.

Unfortunately, there is a bug in the MPX220 OS that causes this problem when one attempts to connect via Bluetooth from a Pocket PC.

That is why the 0d*99# is added to the end of the dialing string...

Or if you want to get specific, you could fill the standard +CGDCONT=... command into the Extra-Dialing string area and then manually do the ATD*99# in the terminal window... That has worked for me in the past also...

Thanks, but I can't get past this step. When trying to pair my PPC and MPx, the PPC times out before it can establish a connection.

I get an error message like this one:

"Unable to establish a connection. Please make sure the device is enabled and in range. Also, make sure that the requested service is available."

Reboot your phone...

I've had that a few times, too...

the manual dial string entry makes some sense....is that why i can dial my isp via bluetooth from my 2215 from outlook but when try to do it from connection manager (bluetooth modem) i get similar error messages?????

Posted by: gapfilmvideo

oops incomplete thought....when i dial via bluetooth from outlook it WILL connect to the server but from within connection manager, (bluetooth modem mode) i get errors....

AFAIK, this problem is only between Pocket PCs and the MPx220...

Still does not work for me. I'm not given the blank field to paste the new dial string.

Make sure you have the "Enter Dialing Commands Manually" selected. It is the key to making this work..

After you try to start the connection, a blank screen will pop up named Terminal. You paste the dialing string there...

I did, but still nothing.

Does anyone know the commands to make this work w/ T-Mobile? I'm using an Axim X50v.
