Advice required for finding the right phone...

Dear all,

I'm looking to see if anyone can offer me any suggestions as to what phones I could look at to buy. I'm relatively new to the mobile phone industry, so I don't really know where to start myself

Ideally, the kind of phone I'm looking for should also double up as a portable mp3/mp4 player, and if possible, provide a way to could connect it to a car hi-fi so I'm not stuck to listening to Radio 1 FM all the time

It would be good if the phone also therefore had a memory card slot so that music could be transferred from PC in fairly large amounts.

Camera features aren't really a big requirement, so that would be a bonus in that respect.

Another nice feature would be some kind of organiser or calendar that's not fiddly to deal with.

In terms of phone styling, I've had a Motorola v300, which broke. The flip part of the phone is still fine, but I'm a bit dubious about its durability, and I prefer the "standard" styling where the keys and the display are incorporated into the same "panel".

I've been randomly looking around, and all I seem to end up finding are expensive smartphones, which whilst being nice, manifest as a small PC, and I don't really need all of the functions that they offer.

I wouldn't mind something with SymbianOS though, as some of my friends and relatives use the jabber client over GPRS for messaging, which potentially seems to save money on the cost of text messages. If there are alternatives in other operating systems I'm all ears!

Well, I hope that's enough information...any help would be greatly appreciated!

I recommend the Nokia 6230. It doesn't have Symbian OS, and I don't know about connecting it to your car (im sure they make an adapter), but here are the good things that may concern you. It has expandable memory thru MMC card up to 1GB (not all brands work, so make sure you get the right kind). Can play mp3 and AAC formats, but the player is so-so. Also has FM radio (requires headset - acts as antenna) Camera is VERY good for VGA (0.3 MegaPixels). Calendar, Contacts, ToDo lists, and notes can be synchronized with Microsoft Outlook through BlueTooth, Infrared, or USB Cable. The RF reception is about as good as it gets. And its a Nokia - it'll last. It is reasonably priced if you buy it with a plan.

The only bad thing I can think of is that the screen is small, but it has never bothered me.
