NEC N840 mp3/ringtone problem

I have two questions. I hope someone can answer them. Thanks in advance.

1) When i put mp3 on my phone. Sometimes it sees it, sometimes it doesn't. I understand that i have to follow the 8 character limit, but is there anything else that i have to be aware of in order for the phone to see the mp3?

2) Same goes for ringtones. The phone can use midi as ringtones right? How come when i put my midis into the mini-SD, it wouldn't see it in the Music folder? Is there something i need to do?

Thanks a lot.

the mp3s i have no idea about, it's been pretty hit or miss with me too... pretty sure i've narrowed it down to a bitrate issue but i dont have any idea what bitrate to shoot for. the midi files, yer gonna hafta get them to the phone directly cause the minisd doesnt have a "sounds" folder... IR or download them via wap.

Can i somehow transfer them via data cable?

Posted by: I2icky

Nm, i answered my own question and used the cable to transfer a midi to use as a ringer.

Man, is it me or all the default ringers crap?

Btw, i found it very annoying that every time i transferred a file to my phone, that the phone book would wipe out. Good thing i backed it up beforehand

n840 plays upto 320 kb/s and VBRs.
MP3 files don't have to contain russian or other foreign chracters, otherwise they won't play&

Ringtones can be transfered only via USB or IR.
But some MIDs won't be readable becouse of unknown problem&

Posted by: I2icky

I followed all of those rules for mp3, but up till now, it still seems to be a hit or miss

same here. talk about bizzare... hey, have you found any way to make decent video ringers? i've been messing around a lot with the soft that came with the phone and i can get still pics with whatever song i want, no problem. but i want video clips. if i run it thru the prog, they come out extremely chopping like a really really bad gif file...

Yeah i know what that problem is, after countless days of research on this phone I think i finally figured it out. The video plays at 1fps when you select 3gp from Ulead. If you don't choose '3gp' and select 'custom' instead you can choose the frame rate. I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but I think it can be done. Now whether or not you can fit that under the teeny weeny 300k limit is another question. Let me know how it goes.

I too can't get my mp3s to play either. It says 'unable to play data error'. I have 7 letter english file names and the file is encoded at 128bit.

I'm thinking i should get a card reader so i can transfer through SD. Transferring mp3s through data cable takes forever!

Anyone know how to get voice ringtones on this phone, i've tried everything mfm, amr, etc. they all sound like crap. The only thing i got working was midi. But you can't get voice with that... or can you?

Posted by: edykh

You have to unclick the phonebook before you tranfer the data to your phone. Because if you don't unclick it. the phone list is empty so when you tranfer to your phone it tranfer the empty phone list too.

thx edykh

But now i'm still stuck with the mp3 weirdness problem.

As for the voice ringtone, it will work if you convert mp3 to 3gp.

Here's a program that will do it

http://www.imtoo.com/3gp-video-converter.html

However, quality is less than desired.

Just poking ideas in... does the mp3 problems have anything to do with the id tags? Like can or can't have them?

Posted by: jerksmile

iceman, good on ya, the custom thing saves it as an mpeg! then, I2icky i use the nokia mulitimedia converter instead as it's easier and free; just run it thru the converter and send it to yer phone. I am able to get an easy 30 second mp3, plus 15-25 seconds of video to one 5-7mb clip which at amr sound and 64kbps is less than 300kb!!! huzzah!!

Posted by: IceMan77

You can't use 3gp files for SMS tones. What i want is that uh-oh from ICQ whenever i get a SMS msg.

Yeah I like the Nokia converter too. I tried using the Nokia Multimedia Converter 2.0 and converted the ICQ message.wav to message.amr It sounds great in the Nokia converter, but sounds like crap after i upload it to my phone. If any get it to work let me know.

I2, what are you WAP/MMS setting for Rogers, I can't get mine to work.

I used a different program to get an icq uh-oh.amr and when i tried it on my v802se it sounded pretty good (of course not as clear as the .mp3 of it, but still not bad). Let me know if you want to try it out to see how it sounds on your phone.

If you could PM that to me that'd be great! What program did you use to convert wav to amr? It took me a while to stumble upon the Nokia convertor. The N840 comes standard with MFM tones, but when i made a MFM tone I can't transfer it, saying something about being copyrighted???

Posted by: dkny_boi

I'll try uploading it here... see if this works.

Just delete the .zip from the file name (so uh-oh.amr.zip -> uh-oh.amr)

-edit- i used a program called "miksoft Mobile AMR converter". It can do amr -> wav, wav/mp3 -> amr, wav -> sp, sp -> wav.

Posted by: IceMan77

Ha! I have that program too. It's not as nice as the Nokia one though. Something must be wrong with the phone. When i listen to your AMR on the pc it sounds good. After uploading it into my phone, it sounds like a dying donkey squealing...

Posted by: dkny_boi

Lol... that's too bad. it sounds pretty good on my 802se, like i said, still a bit staticky but not enough that i think it sounds horrible

Posted by: jerksmile

yeah, it's really strange this whole amr thing. i've taken vid clips and changed them to whatever bitrate w amr sound and it's fine. but if i just take a sound clip and change it to the same amr setting, it sounds HORRIBLE on the phone... also, there's a bunch of panasonic gd88 yahoo groups that have tons of .mfm files but i cant get any of them to work on the n840 for some reason; always get a "cannot save, wrong format" message.

When I transfer MP3 with a maximum of 8 letters in the title via USB/Information Editor it taqkes forever (more like serial connection) but I can play them all. Funny though that it seems one can not transfer MP3s directly to the SD card with the software or am I missing something?

Posted by: jerksmile

if you transfer them directly to the sd, the names have to be real short... and i still only see some of the songs that are really there. it's a bizzare little phone sometimes!

Posted by: Funmap

You are right - talking about the crippled BT too - however I am very happy with it

Posted by: jerksmile

indeed!!

Posted by: Funmap

Finally - I used a card reader, transferred 30 songs with less than 8 characters in a few minutes to the phone - I put them all in the Private and then 100NEC.. folder and they are ALL there

Posted by: MODist

And what about Java games on 840? Could anyone download some Java app., I mean not via WAP?

what is the exact folder you used

PRIVATE>100NEC>MUSIC?

Posted by: shaolinmonk

figured everything out....

mp3 must be 128 bit rate 44100, if you remove all the id tags it should work 100%.

the root should be

PRIVATE>NEC>MUSIC>100NECDT

Posted by: swu

when you finishing making a 3gp ringtone, how do you transfer to the phone? I saved it under the video folder in the sd card, but it didn't show up in my phone.

Posted by: jerksmile

you have to make sure that it is labled properly. mine all have to be called something like "MOL002" or something. otherwise it wont show up. you can go back in and rename them once they're on your phone though.
