Solution for dead Sliders.

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hiya,
My slider is stuck in download mode, so it's not quite dead and I'm hoping to resurrect it by reloading the firmware. I broke it by deleting ringtones off the phone using the phone instead of the computer- now it won't restart. I looked up what the error message I have means, (fs_dir.c 02551) and it means my phone is stuck in download mode. In fact, whenever I open any PST applications, they say the phone is in download mode so nothing can be done. I recently downloaded the software from this website for the SE47:

http://franktownco.tripod.com

..namely the NS10214.hxb file which seems to be a firmware image for the SE47. (about 6 MB).
I can double click NS10214.hxb and it opens Kyocera Wireless PST Software Download.

Here is where I am unsure of what to do!
I do not understand what SPC means and how that factors into whether or not I can put this software on my phone. The 'Auto' box is checked next to SPC and the box is filled with 0's. I'm hoping there are some of you out there who have gotten this to work, preferably using the firmware file I have now. I've read through a lot of threads and it seems as few to none have managed to flash their Slider successfully themselves. How do I go about doing this? I don't want to try it just yet without some advice for fear I could ruin my phone for good.

By the way, I do apologize if the subject heading is a little deceiving.
Thanks so much for any help you can provide.
If its easier to talk on AIM, my screenname is YellowCiti.

You need to un-check the auto SPC box and type in 868666

Posted by: Polaris911

Hey,
I am by no means trying to doubt you, but how sure are you this is all I need to do?
How do you know this is the right SPC number?
Do you have any idea if that'll get me out of download mode and put new software on my phone?
What would you do if you were in my position?
Would you trust the software from this site and go for it?
Thanks again- sorry to be a bother.

Posted by: AgeNt B

Thats the SPC code on mine. Even if it dosen't work, what do you got to lose? I mean, i'm sure if you enter that code, your phone will power back on and work fine. That software company is defenatelly to be trusted....

SPC code on all Verizon phones I'm aware of is 000000

Posted by: Polaris911

AAAaahhh. This is killing my brain lol.

What do you think I should use?
Is there a way to find out what the SPC code on my particular phone is somehow?

Otherwise, I think I will just use 000000 because according to
other threads, thats what I should do. Please help! Thanks again.

Just load the firmware. I trust that site...................just do it!

Posted by: Polaris911

Okay here's what happened.

I loaded the firmware on and it went to 100%, then the phone restarted, but the error message still came up on the screen "fs_dir.c 02551". Then the status said "Attemping to Communicate with the phone" for about 1 minute. THen the status changed to Software Download Aborted and I got the Error " Could not Communicate to phone after DMSS upgrade and Reset"

When I try to restart the phone now, I get the same error on the screen "fs_dir.c 02551". What can I do now? PST tells me my Slider's still stuck in download mode!

Try loaing the flashing the phone again. This time when you do it, use 86866 as your spc code.

Posted by: Polaris911

Yeah I already did try that. Same thing happened.
Do you know where I can find this SE47.exe file everyone is talking about but that doesn't seem to exist. I looked all over for it on the forums- the search engine doesn't work well at all. Does anyone have the file on their computer?

I'm also available to talk to on AIM- my sn is YellowCiti

if you fried your phone it's dead. people have claimed that flashing it is possible but verizon tried it on my slider TWICE. because I've fried my slider twice. it isn't as simple as flashing it. just go talk to your carrier to see if they'll replace it, or try kyocera if your carrier says they won't help.

I was hoping, just to wrap this whole thing up, if someone could
just post some simple precautions when using BitPim and the
data cable with the phone.

From now on, I know I'll be deleting files from my phone using
BitPim, not the phone itself.

Is there anything else I or anyone should know (besides avoid
overloading the memory and exceeding its capacity) to prevent
this from happening again?
Thanks again for all the help.

The obvious is becarefull what you delete Bitpim will allow you to delete some of the important stuff. Also if using software other than bitpim don't trying using your phone doing a data transfer I know it sounds like common sense but I did this and froze the thing up. (wasn't paying attention ) But MOST IMPORTANT DO NOT UNDER ANY CERCOMSTANCE DELETE ANYTHING WITH THE PHONE. It is to much data for the phone to process and will fry. Luckaly most carriers will replace the phone for free

HA HA I stole your lock

uh, let me do this properly

1.when using programs such as bitpim and gagin, you must be very careful of how much remaining data is left on the phone(you can check the memory on a verizon slider by going to menu>get it now>options>manage apps) a general rule is that you want to leave at least 350KB of data on the phone as this magic number is what I have used since frying 2 sliders and has worked well

2. in the event that you might have loaded too much data, and the phone hasn't died already, don't panic. turning off the phone at this point WILL fry the phone. stopping the download of a file mid-way by pulling out the data cable during a transfer will also crash the phone.

3. if a file needs to be deleted(you don't like it anymore, you loaded too much data, etc) then do it using your data cable and bitpim or gagin. trying to delete with the phone will crash the phone and if you have too much data on the phone, will fry the phone on boot-up.

4. another thing to prevent your phone from frying is by not trying to load files that are FAR too large. try to keep the MP3's small and short. you don't need a 45 second ringtone. 20 seconds is more than enough. wallpapers are too tiny to be affected by this rule, but trying to load 40 on your phone is also an issue per statement 1

5. in the event you do get an FS_DIR error. you've fried your slider. your options after this are small. first off, you CANNOT reflash your phone. this is what I've been told by the nice people who replaced my phone at verizon. if it was that easy, they would have reflashed it(one lady tried and said it wasn't possible. if anyone has screenshots/proof showing otherwise, POST IT). with a fried phone your options are as follows

•if you have a nice carrier, go to them, show them the problem with the slider, and chances are that they'll replace it(I had 2 sliders replaced by verizon even with NO insurance and NO warrenty so it must be a common enough problem that they don't require either for a free replacement).

•in the event you don't have a nice carrier you can

~sell your phone for parts on ebay and use that money to buy
another phone.
~buy another phone that isn't fried and try to flash it with your
carriers software
~say screw phones, cancel your subscription, carry quarters
everywhere to use pay phones, and use your slider everyday
as a paperweight as a reminder that technology and
corporations are evil and need to be bombed.....

Thank you for making an organized list with suggestions.
Thats exactly what I wanted.
As far as ringtones, what would you think is the maximum size
for a file? 400 kb? 350 kb?
Also, since I'm getting a new slider, I want to have as much free
space on there as possible. Will removing the crappy little icons for
contacts it comes with and the lame ringtones, and stupid wallpapers
free up space or does it not truly delete them? I should be okay removing
files that came on the phone with the phone and not the data cable, right? Thanks.

Posted by: thatkoreanguy

you gotta understand that deleteing anything that the phone comes with will probably be restored upon boot up and that might cause the phone to fry also. i don't think there's a maximum file size for mp3's but just use your best judgement. I've loaded 1.4MB mp3's(2 minute long song) and it worked fine. I deleted it with my data cable and there wasn't any problems, but it is a risk. if I had dropped my phone or tried to delete it using the slider, I might have fried it. my suggestion to you is that you should leave all the data on the phone that it came with. load 1 or 2 mp3's(small, 20 second ringtones are good) and a few wallpapers. then check the memory. if you still have a good amount(more than 350Kb) then try turning off the phone. it'll reboot and you'll see you don't have quite as much data left on the phone. but 350Kb is a good margin. if you're worried, leave more. my 350kb margin turned into 167kb after my slider turned off and on so I know somethings happening when you reboot.

edit
anything you can do so far with your slider can be found here

Just to back up thatkoreanguy on this flashing a fried phone thing.
When I took my phone in the US Cellular techs sent it to Kyocera and they couldn't even fix it so US Cellular gave me a new phone now if Kyocera couldn't do it I am pretty sure nobody else is going to be able to.

What the hell do they do with these phones then when you switch it for a new one? Salvage the parts?
It almost sounds like a software error caused like a physical hardware problem.. know what I mean?

When I bring in my slider this weekend to have them switch it for a new one, should I bring the box it came in, adapter, instructions, etc? Thanks.

Bring all the stuff the phone came with.

well verizon just replaced my phone. i think they take apart the broken ones and replace the fried hardware. I've noticed on some of my replaced phones that they removed my ringer folder in sounds(trying to keep me from loading mp3's eh?) and that the area behind the battery underneath the sticker was an almost...burn mark as if the phone physically "fried" from the inside. but it's all good, if I ever break anything on my phone, I'll just fry it and have verizon replace it. :laughs:
