BitPim won't find my VX4400

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I just bought a VX4400 off of eBay and also picked up a cable from eBay, it has the Prolific chip in it, which is from what I've read the one I want, but I cannot get BitPim to find the phone. In my device manager it lists the cable as "Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port"

I've tried changing the Comm port assigned to the cable from 3 to 4 to 5 and still nothing.

I have also made sure to set my phone Data Settings to RS-232C (COM Port). I have also tried it on USB just to check but nothing.

Can anyone help me with this, I have read about getting the drivers for the VX10 from FutureDial but I have no way of getting into it due to a lack of owning one of their programs.

Any suggestions would be appreciated...

I have also tried QPST to no avail....

hhhhmmmmm used my vx4400 with both prgrams...maybe set the port to auto?...make sure in bitpim you have it set for the vx4400.....gouss it could be a cable problem too

Did you install any special drivers for the cable or did you just let windows install the cable itself??

I have an LG VX4400, a futuredial cable (serial to USB) and the latest BitPim 0.7.30-official.

The same cable with the same computer and phone used to work.

This is what the cable looks like
http://www.futuredial.com/FDCart/Pr...?pid=732&cid=50

The new elements are that I reinstalled Windows XP with SP2 and got the new BitPim.

When I plug the cable into the USB port, Windows recognizes that there is a device but cannot find any drivers to support it.

I tried downloading the LG driver package from FutureDial's site, but they do not work and the tech support at FutureDial said that the drivers online were for the "pure USB cable only."

In BitPim, the only ports listed are COM1 and the modem.

Windows only shows an unidentified USB device in Device Manager.

FutureDial's site says that using any application other than their own voids the cable warranty (so it's not supported to use BitPim).

How can I get XP and BitPim to recognize the FutureDial cable?

I had the samr problem with my old 400's. I finaly got a tech on the phone and he e-mailed me a .dll file that he said would help and it did. I was able to talk to the phone with bitpim 7.25 and win98. Now i have not tried to talk to the phones with any newer version of bitpim or on winxp. Since i retired the phones and don't have a machine with win98 on it i'll try with my XP machine with version 7.30 and if it works i'll send you the .dll. I'll try it late tonite when it's my play time.

alright i was able to get my 4400 to talk with winxp and bitpim 7.30 It took alittle playing and as usual with that phone a little inconsistant. it never worked perfect but that's why futuredial won't support it. first make sure you have the lg drivers and futuredial usb drivers installed. open bitpim settings but first set your phone to usb in the data settings. then in bitpim settings choose your phone and click on browse next to the com port. this will bring a window up that shows you the available ports and and hopefully all of the futuredial usb's. try highlighting them one at a time and try them one at a time. start with auto. that's what i did and would ya look at that it worked. now inherent to that phone and i have had it for over two years it doesn't always want to talk. lots of failures while in brew and such things. you'll see it start to download or upload and then fail. if you get to that point just keep trying and it will work eventually. I also noticed at one point it would always fail. look at the bottom where it shows you ehat it is transfering. for some reason it wouls stop at the same name in my phone book and fail. i deleted that name and it worked. so my long winded point is keep trying. let me know if you need any more specifics. i'll try helping you however i can. oh yeah i didn't install that .dll so i guess you don't need it. if you still want it i'll e-mail it.

After telling me that the drivers on the site are for the "pure USB cable only, " (I have the prolific Serial to USB cable, which is different). I bought it 2 years ago at Radio Shack when I got my VX4400 new.

FutureDial wrote me to say:

"That cable is the problem. Where did you get this cable we discontinued this cable quite awhile ago. You will have to exchange it for cable 31. You can either exchange at RadioShack and purchase from us or if RadioShack has it, you can do a exchange there."

Then they followed up and said:

"Here are the drivers for the prolific cable. Download and unzip. During the installation point the wizard to the location of the drivers (above file) that you unzipped. You should be all set after that."

The folder that they sent has several folders and files in it. The applications are "uninstall" and "DrvRemover" so I figure I will just point the XP auto-recognizer at the folder to see if it finds the driver. There is a file called ser2pl with the file type Setup Information.

I don't have the cable with me right now so will have to try this out later.

Thanks.

howdya make out? i have the prolific drivers as well becuz i bought snapsync before i knew what to do with bitpim. the disk has the prolific drivers too. let me know if ya need them.

I still don't have my cable with me. I'll post the results. thanks

The drivers that FutureDial sent me for the prolific serial-to-USB cable for my VX4400 did work to the extent that XP did install the drivers upon autorecognizing the cable and BitPim now recognizes that it is the "(*) Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM4)" on COM4 (which is really one of my USBs) and BitPim also sees that it's a VX4400 at the end of that cable. That was the good part.

When I try to go to Data > Get Phone Data in BitPim, I get an error saying that "Device needs attention - LG - VX4400 on COM4: The phone is not responding while transitioning from none to brew. See the help for troubleshooting tips"

I do have the phone set (Menu, 8, 6, 2) to RS232C-Com port.

What am I doing wrong?
thanks

i had the same issue with mine. try changing the phone from 232 to usb and if that doesn't work maybe try unistalling the drivers and then reinstall them. it sounds like your close. can you read the file sytem? sometimes the phone wouldn't let me up or dowload anything but would let me manipulate the filesystem not sure what the deal is with this phone but it is tempermental. sometimes it talked and other times it didn't. keep trying though. do you have snapsync or any other program? just wondering if you could get another program to talk. Have you tried an earlier version of bitpim? maybe try that as well. i'll have to look later today and list the drivers that i have so we can compare.

I tried setting the phone Data Port to USB as you had suggested earlier but that didn't help.

I cannot read the file system.

When I tried to set the Edit Settings for the port to Auto, it just got hung up trying all the combos itself.

The prolific cable does show up as COM4 and it correctly sees an LG VX4400 at the other end so I think that is the right one to select.

I still have the same issue:

The logs say this
12:52:24.111 COM4: Changed port speed to 115200

12:52:27.625 COM4: Timed out waiting for 7e, requested bytes 1 - 0 bytes read

12:52:27.635 Error: Device needs attention - LG-VX4400 on COM4
LG-VX4400 on COM4: The phone is not responding while transitioning mode from none to brew.

See the help for troubleshooting tips

What to do next?
thanks

how can you tell if the cable is prolific or not

Posted by: kdanieli

with the drivers that FutureDrive emailed me, the cable was autodetected by XP as prolific. Prolific is the name of the chip in the cable that does the conversion between Serial and USB, I believe. Mine has a "box" in the middle of the cable where the chip is. I've read that just because it has that box doesn't make it the right cable. I'm no expert.

Now, I'm still not able to use BitPim (see my last post). Does anyone have any ideas on what I need to do?

thanks

BItpim wouldn't find my phone either (put it on my POS computer tonight) I ended up changind the port settings from auto detect to the port the phone was attached to. Works great now.

now I gotta make some new ringers again, "scotty doesn't know" is gettign old

I have a lg vx8000, using newest version of bitpim, no probs, I noticed I have to have the phone turned on and have it flipped open to upload/download things to it or I get an error.

I used the same cable that I use to connect to the internet with that phone. It is a USB with the little box in the middle of the cable. It flashes red when it is accessing the phone but only loads and unloads the phone book. Otherwise, I get the error message. If anyone thinks they can decipher the error message, I will print the entire thing.

Thanks for the help - I appreciate any I could get.
