Treo 650 Without Camera

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Is it possible to get a Treo 650 without camera, other than for SPRINT? Is it possible to get a GSM/Edge version of the 650 without camera? If so, where?

Darn no camera policies at work.

Thanks.

ATT still has the Treo 600 NC (No Camera) I believe.. no 650

on my treo 650 gsm go into cam then look for option and turn it off.

Thanks. But that won't keep me out of jail.

Seriously, the existence of a camera, even if turned off via a software setting, is not allowed in facilities where I work. I am not alone in this predicament.

not trying to be funny, but would your job allow you to put a screwdriver into the lense and destroy the camera? Though its not as pretty as the non treo 650 would be, but hey?

I am sure if you wait a while, one will come out.

A drop of black paint would be more professional

maybe a new job?

Not many hofoers seem to understand what a big deal this is, but the people who run RIM do, and that's why you'll never see a blackberry with a camera. The feds love RIM because they know that they don't have to examine them closely to see if they have a camera or not; they don't.

Punching the lens with a screwdriver, painting over it, ... will not impress the armed federal employee who gets to look at it. I don't need to take pictures, listen to music, or watch videos on my phone, but I do need email, wap, html, ssh. Treo and RIM will do the work, and Treo is a lot easier to pay for.

Me, I'd pay EXTRA for a camera-free phone. I like my job and don't think I'd like jail. I keep an old moto 7389 just to take on the road when I visit a no-camera place on business. If my job was no-camera, I'd be busy seem editing a v180 to be quad-band.

There will be a camera-free 650 sooner or later, hopefully after palm fixes the problems that infest the 650 now. I'd get a 650 in a minute if

(1) it had no %#@@% camera
(2) it worked
(3) I was out of contract

(1) and (2) are showstoppers, and I may get myself a 7100g if I can get a decent price on EBAY. RIM products, unlike Palm, don't seem to have major problems with (2).

I personally don't use the camera on my camera phones but it is never a major concern for me.

I do understand that it can be a problem for those in the James Bond capacity but the reality is that if one wants to steal trade secrets or share secure information, there are many other ways to do this without the camera phone.

I don't know how much of a security threat the camera phone is in real life practice but if you work for Big Brother and love your job then I guess you have no choice.

I would rather not work under such archaic conditions

No offense meant, but an organization that is worried about cameras in their workspace (easily understood) but is not at all concerned about someone with a device that can send outbound email, or connect via unsecured (by the company) vpn/ssh capable of uploading plenty of classified files?

I just ain't buyin it.

Buy it. Try entering many federal buildings and see how funny the marshalls at the door think you are... you're definitely right, but, do you think they understand what a vpn or ssh is? They do get excited harassing you about a camera phone though..

Has anyone ever accused the government of being smart or consistent? Not me. But things are how they are.

Methinks that you are jumping to conclusions... I some places - such as federal courtrooms - cameras are banned by law whereas communication devices are not.

Posted by: msmathguy

Many places are very explicit. No cameras or camera phones allowed on premises. All devices with photographic capabilities are prohibited.

Yup. The absolute prohibition against cameras in many secure areas is one reason we probably will never see a Blackberry with a camera. So many of their customers are government agencies. Probably won't see SD cards used in Blackberries either for the same reason: security. This is largely why I'm transitioning from my BB to a shiney new Treo 650.

For the people that are waiting for the Treo 650 w/o camera it's now the rebate form with limited availability. Again this don't mean a thing. Beacuse Cingular will put phones on the rebate form months before they come out.
