Is the bluetooth on the MPX220 or SMT crippled?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I am looking at getting an MPX220 or the audiovox - but I've recently read that motorola crippled the bluetooth on a few of their V phones, due to piracy concerns. I don't want a half ***** attempt at bluetooth - I want the real deal.

Anyone know?

I don't understand you, but the 220 have limitations on the bluetooth but with some tricks it works great, the audiovox 5600 has more features but it depends what type of phone you like, flip(mpx220) or candy bar(smt5600), i like both, they have great features and difereces but at the same time are equal.

This are my BABYssss, The SMT5600, My MPx200 and the Holux GR-230 Bluetooth GPS.....

If its motorola - than they may have done this all of their bluetooth phones....

here is a thread on here too:

Ok i read your link, i never read some like this on a Mpx220 or on a SMT5600, i can tranfer files good, and remember, its a smartphone, if moto can't, the programs can

The MPx 220 has full BT, tho Motorola forgot to put the port setting program on the MPx 220 like it is on the SMT 5600. However you can edit the registry for this. I am not sure which key is for which service not only that but I don't know if it is protected (meaning that when I change the default value, it changes back if I power cycle the phone. Its some sort of file protection and I am trying to figure out how to disable it). For instance if I wanted to use a GPS device I would need to know the port that it needs to be set on so that the MPx 220 and the GPS device can communicate (with the right app on the phone too of course). I am working on it, trying to see which is which, I don't have a GPS device so I can't test it. So far every BT device that I have discovered with BT and or paired worked flawlessly and had no problems.

I think BT on the MPx220 IS crippled, at least with Cingular's version. The only thing I've been able to use successfully is the headset. The phone reports it supports DUN, but I haven't been able to use it as a modem for my PDA the way I can with a V551. Also, it does not support OBEX, and though you can enable it through the registry (supposedly), you just get a lame FTP folder where you need to put stuff you want to share - no way to browse the phone's file system the way you can with a V551.

This is the kind of crap I'm talking about. If I get a BT handset, I want full functionality - ie, this would be an awesome file storage device for example. If I can't transfer files to and from the device, what good is it?

One thing I'd definitely want it to do is support my "doc n talk."

DUN works fine with my laptop. BT sync works as well, although I've never tried file transfer via BT.
I remember reading that a longer text string needs to be added to use the DUN on a PPC. Sorry I can't be more specific, I just remember reading it back when I 1st got the phone.

You CAN transefer files between your computer, PDA, and other phones if they have BT. I use my phone as BT modem with my Windows XP machine with no problem. If you want to know how to do this go to my blog. As to teathering with a PDA, there is a way I do know that the PDA has to call for the connection like you do on the computer. I had my MPx 220 teatherd with my old Palm T3 but thats when I first got the phone and I don't have the T3 anymore and of course that was with a palm device.

Want to view the phones file system? Do a USB or BT ActiveSync and click the explore button, you can view every file that the phone has via Windows Explorer, no need to use OBEX for that and you can drag and drop files between the two.

True, you can browse the file system through ActiveSync, and it works beautifully, but that doesn't take out the point that BT IS indeed crippled on the MPx220, as I've had BT in other phones (SE T616 and Moto V551) and both have more transparent BT implementations, where you did not have to jump through hoops to get things working.

That is true but its nothing that a piece of software couldn't fix. When I say crippled I mean that the hardware actually does't support the services, not just the software. If the hardware does and the software doesn't then thats ok, you can always get software that does, however if the hardware is crippled only to lets say send files then no software is going to bring in other functionalties. But yea it is a pain that you have to edit and tweak the registry to get BT fully operational if that.
