Downside to buying a VZW converted 650?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Is there a benefit to not waiting for Verizon's T650?

If I buy a Sprint converted T650 now, will I be more likely to have a more useful Bluetooth?

Is there ultimately a downside to buying a converted unit in terms of future Verizon features, or Verizon firmware upgrades? Or is it exactly the same phone with no real differences?

In my opinion, no.

Probably not. Sprint has crippled the bluetooth as well, and I'd imagine that Shadowmite would be able to hack the Verizon ROM just the same as what his did for Sprint's version.

MMS will not work with a converted unit. For all intents & purposes, it's the same phone.

Downside?

No support from Verizon.
More expensive.

If Verizon stated they would not carry it, I'd say go for it if you really want a 650, but with all signs pointing to a release within the next few weeks, why not wait, get it through an official Verizon channel (discounted if you get into a contract), with a full warranty?

At this point in time, I really don't see much of a point in converting a Sprint model to Verizon.

I've read that gadgeteer article...it doesn't really answer my questions.

No. But the Verizon version is apparantly going to be released soon so if it was me, I'd wait.

Perhaps insurance though. I'm sure you can't insure the 650 through Verizon right now since they don't carry it yet. It's an expensive phone to be using un-insured.

No. It will be exactly the same.

It's the same phone hardware wise.

In essence you have to lie to Verizon to get them to activate it for you. Unless you happen to get an understanding rep. who is willing just to do it.

I'm not sure how you expect someone to tell you whether the Sprint version will prevent you from getting "future Verizon features." What features? That's the thing, no one knows what, if any, features may or may not be added so it's impossible to say which device they could be applied to.

The upgrade patches can be applied but it's not as simple as if you had a Verizon version from the start.

Hopefully that better answers your questions. Sorry you didn't find the Gadgeteer article helpful.

Thanks!

Sounds like I should wait then.

I found it informative, but it didn't answer my questions. But it was a great article!

Thanks again
