Using BlackBerry with T-Mobile PRE-PAID????

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Dudes, I have an unlocked BlackBerry 7290 and I want to use it only when I go on trips, to keep up with email, etc.

I know that I can hook up to T-mobile with it on the PrePaid (pay as you go) plan, but does this include the push-email features, etc.?

Has anyone used a BlackBerry on PrePaid????

I need to know!

Thanks

No, the blackberry data service is not available as prepaid.

T-Mobile does have an option for pre-paid service with email, it's just not the Blackberry. You'd have to get a Sidekick II. But given how unreliable the data network provided by Danger and T-Mobile is, I wouldn't recommend it. Just get a Blackberry as your regular phone. Once you get used to having email and other wireless web features in the palm of your hand, you might find yourself using that capability more than you originally thought you would. Take it from me, I know from personal experience.

If you want a device that's geared more towards the phone side of things, go with a 7100 series Blackberry, such as the 7100t with T-Mobile or the 7100g with Cingular. If you want the full QWERTY keyboard for a better typing experience, use the one you've got. Of course, the 7290 is optimized for Cingular's network, so you'll be better off using it with them, than with T-Mobile.

Just my 2¢, for what it's worth.

I was thinking you might be able to do sk2 prepaid, but I wasn't sure.

How about a boost sim card in a 7510? Does anyone know what features would actually be avaulable? Any type of web browsing?

I seriously doubt that would work. I've never heard of ANY carrier offering Blackberry service via pre-paid. The closest you can get is a Sidekick II on T-Mobile's pre-paid service. Period. The Sidekick II may be the ONLY PDA phone of any kind that anyone offers on pre-paid. It's because, as a general rule, the kind of customers that are going to use a PDA phone, aren't the kind of customers who are going to use pre-paid service.

So, again, if you're bound and determined to get a PDA phone/email device on pre-paid service, talk to T-Mobile about a pre-paid Sidekick II. Then you, too, can experience just how lousy their coverage and data services are!

I talked with T-Mobile again on the phone. They assured me that they would offer the full data service on a pre-paid basis.

I guess I will take a punt and try it. I will sign up just before my trip at the end of the month and see how it goes.

I will try to remember to report back here what happens.

There were some claims toward the end of last year that using a boost sim in a blackberry gave access to the nol browser, but only one person had made that claim that it worked. Either it didn't work, and they were full of $h|t, or it did and no one else bothered with it. Either way, I'm not sure why you'd want a blackberry without the email service...if someone did, I'll refer them to motocdmahead's post above....
