Nextel Blackberry 7520

Sometime back I used to be the proud owner of the Nextel Blackberry 7510. However, since it didn't work in letting me send/receive emails, and gave me headaches, I decided to return it and went back to the old fashioned cellular phone. Now, I see that Nextel has come out with their "new and improved" Blackberry 7520 with a lot more gizmos on it. My question to the group is: Does anyone have the Nextel Blackberry 7520 (with full web/email package and phone service)? How is it overall? Does it give you headaches when you have to use it as a phone? Are you able to send and receive emails? Is there anything cheaper than the Blackberry data plan Nextel offers or anyway to bypass that? What do you think are the pros and cons? I want to be 150% sure if I am to purchase this unit...that's why I'm doing the research first. Thanks.

No. But it's not comfortable for long periods (someone here described it as "talking to a piece of toast."). I recommend using a Bluetooth headset.

Yes.

No, and no.

Pros:

Awesome reception, build quality. Screen large and much brighter backlight than 7510. Keys enlarged slightly compared to 7510. Capable of saving images, opening attachments. Fast, reliable email messaging. Bluetooth!! Capable of backing up entire content of handheld to PC. Syncs with Outlook, etc. Supports many third-party applications (some freeware, some not). Capable of full HTML web browsing with purchase of 30.00 reqwireless webviewer. Great speakerphone.

Cons:

Poor battery life (esp. with Bluetooth enabled, or with lots of Direct Connect usage). Big and bulky. Ringtones awful -- monophonic and quiet. Multimedia experience almost nonexistent -- no mp3 or video playback. Nextel's web service slow (56k max throughput). Included Nextel Online browser is WAP only -- sucks. Font selection minimal. Limited or no customization available for user interface.

For me, the pros far outweigh the cons. Beautiful device with great features. Snap one up and use the 30-day trial period to your full advantage. Visit www.blackberryforums.com for more user opinions.

cabletech, there are many users of the blackberry 7520 on these boards, as well as over at www.blackberryforums.com as VCI mentioned already. It is a great device, and does have many updates over the 7510 (updates are a combination of hardware and software).

Many many thanks to those who replied. Also, what is WAP and RFI?

Posted by: martin_j001

WAP is a form of mobile internet--wap pages usually don't contain images, contain broken down and specific links. Usually slightly different than regular web pages. A wap-only browser (like the one included with the bb), will pretty much limit you to viewing wap pages only. Even if you visit a regular web page, you won't see graphics or html codes, all you will see is text.

As for RFI, I'm not real sure. RF usually refers to the level of signal the phone is getting, but not seeing RFI used in context, I'm not sure at all if its the same thing in this case (although its probably something simple that I should know and just don't remember or something...I don't feel that old yet!! :doh. Hope this helps.

I am as well looking into getting BB for work purposes but we're going to need the Microsoft Office equivalent for hte BB, forget what it's called, to edit Excel and send Excel files...have any of you used this, and how quickly do files transfer from BB to BB. I know it's through E-mail but Nextel transfer with text messages suck for receiving and I know it doesn't go through that but just curious i'll check out the BB forums but I gnereally look here first

I believe you are reffering to eOffice software. Email using the blackberry is extremely quick--in most instances its immediate.

Yeah, I've been doing my research on it, we're probably going to just get eCell since we won't need to whole suite, plus it's half the price. Also, nice that the e-mails transfer quickly

You will notice that martin is more of a blackberry encyclopedia than a person. And he is always helping people out, and never being an a-hole about anything. I would say he is the most knowledgeable and helpful member of hofo. Thanks martin!

Probably a good move if you don't need the eWord app, just make sure that eWord won't be something you miss in a month or two--it may be much more expensive to add that on after the fact. I find in most cases that I am able to send email and receive email (between two Nextel blackberry's on BWC) pretty much instantly. I had a conversation with a guy just last week and it was more like instant messaging without the funky colors and all. I have had a few instances where an email takes a few minutes to come through or go out, but it really depends on how the device is set up and to what email address it was sent to. Pop3 addresses that are polled by your BWC account only poll every 15 minutes, so it could take up to that amount of time for an email to be delivered, but even that can be worked around using forwarding from your pop3 account.
