Total FLASH guide for DUMMIES

Info:
- Firmwares are the software of your cellphone... (the windows / linux of your phone )
- Firmwares are being improved all the time and little known bugs (like the kalenderbug in old
versions) are fixed in newer firmwares.
- Firmwares can sometimes be changed (modded) by 'hackers'. That way you can modify the
entire phone as long as you have the right programs and knowledge
- Those (modded or newer) firmwares can be flashed into your phone replacing the old
firmware.
- The D500 does not have voice-dialing/voice-commands. TIM a italian provider had his own
branded unique firmware which DID have voice-dialing/voice-commands (D500E). So you
can flash that firmware if you want those futures. Unfortunately that's an older firmware with
some bugs. At the time of this writing there is not yet a way to remove those but I know for
sure that there will be one in time. What has been done is removing the annoying branding of
TIM so now you can flash the 'unbranded' software to your D500 and make it a D500E with
voice-dialing/voice-commands.

* Firmwares are shown as:
examples: D500CEEB3 or D500AIDK6
type *#1234# in your phone to see which firmware you have.

D500 stands for the type of samsung phone
CE / AI = branding type or coutry/region (CE is western europe, AI is TIM branding etc)
E / D = Year of the firmware release (D=2004 E=2005 F=2006 etc)
E / K = Month of the firmware release (A= januari B=februari....L=december)
3 / 6 = revision number of the software in that month (example CEEB3
is 'newer' than CEEB2)

Flashing:
1) Buy a serial cable and a 9v battery:
for example at http://allgsm.co.uk/product_info.ph...9cd7e735c2b9936
Not expensive and they deliver fast (england to holland 5 days!!)
2) Download the firmware you want to flash (must be 3 files: a tfs a cfg and a bin or cla file)
See for nice firmware downloads:
* http://avi-stuff.irde.to/files.php?catid=116
* http://www.samsung-stuff.de (look in the database)
* http://www.samsungworld.net/forum/index.php
* http://www.cell-base.com/4free/files.php

3) The flashing :

- Remove simcard, and make sure you have a fully charged battery (of phone)
- Connect the cable to the phone and attach 9v battery to cable.
- Open corona downloader and hit start. (it will say to power on your phone)
- Push phone 'on' button shortly.
- Files are being read. (about 30 sec)
- You now can do a NOR and NAND backup if you want but you can skip this step.
If you do you will get a 30 mb and a 128 mb .hex file. Rename the 30 mb to .cla and the 128
mb to .tfs and you have your own backup.
- Press the 'format' button under NAND flash. (takes about 15 sec). Do this or you will have
empty 0 kb pictures in your picture maps which you can not delete in your phone.
(If you do not erase the NOR flash all names/numbers will not be affected, your
mms and wap settings will be lost!! So write them down before flashing)
- Select 'tfs+bin' and in the browse buttons select the .tfs file and the .bin (or .cla) from the
firmware you want to put in your phone.
- Now hit download.
- Wait for about 3 hours and your done. The program will say when it's done.

That's all folks

Enjoy...

I am tryign to flash my phone however i have heard from several people thati need a flasher cable but then others say i can use my usb datacable.

MY USB Data cable is wt048000317

i power down my phone, take sim out and connect the cable.

i am using Corona Downloader v32

I select teh comm port i believe to be the one for my phone (even tho its not displayed in windows) Comm 4

I click start.

Now from what i gather from flashing E700 and Nokia phones i click power on and its suppose to download or connect to the phone?

However mine never connects, it sits on 'Power On' phone.

Can anyone give me some advice on what i am doing wrong?

Posted by: Randy_Badger

a quick couple of questions
how do i do the backup
and wot do u do with the ,cfg file

thanks

Posted by: A|ex

To backup you dump the info onto your machine, i cant even get it to connect never mind dump

How do you get it to connect and wha cable are you using?

Posted by: Randy_Badger

first time i tried to connect it wouldnt work so unconnected and reconnected all cables and tested battery. connected on com2, once u press start and power on phone it reconises immediatly but phone itself doesnt power on (i assume if connetion is bad then the phone will power up as this happened when it wouldnt connect)
thanks dump takes ages

i got mine off ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....ssPageName=WDVW
only took 2 days to arrive

gonna use firmware D500CEEB3 unless any one knows any better ones

and wot do u do wiv .cfg file ?

also wot should you call the backup .cla and .tfs files or doesnt it matter ie backup.cla

Posted by: A|ex

yes but you have a proper flasher cable, i have a usb datacable and i want to know how other people are gettng their usb datacable to flash and detect their phone

Posted by: hugeeug

Yah, I just got my datacable and have the Corona software handy. All I want to hear from you guys is that its possible to flash using the usb data cable. Please tell me its possible!

Posted by: A|ex

From what i hear it IS possible but i am starting to think that it depends on the cable. Maybe there are some datacables which can do both and there are some which can only do one thing?

Maybe posting some cable models s/non will help:

I got the same exact USB data cable as you Alex. I bought mine off Ebay from Itrimming. Same Serial #.

I live in SoCal and my D500 (Orange) crapped on me after I turned off the phone. It turns on, but it gets stuck during Samsung boot screen, and the LCD keeps flashing. Is this what happens when there's no firmware to boot into? I remember that my E715 had a similar symptoms when I didn't flash it right...

Anyway, I'm going to purchase the data cable attempting to restore the firmware. So the question is will my D500 work in US if I flash the firmware using one the files listed below? Also would D500E firmware work on my D500?

I've been using Orange D500 with Orange UK firmware. D500 box and manual are in French, but the firmware I believe is a Orange UK firmware. And D500 worked fine with T-Mobile.

Please help! I went to the Chinese dealer today, and told me that it would take 2-3 months to get it repaired. Basically, the guy BSed me.

m8 you can take the D500 anywhere in the world as long as you have international roaming enabled. The phone is Tri Band! so itdoesnt matter what firmware you flash it with

Posted by: A|ex

bluepix did you test this?

Posted by: veeinc

Does anyone know how to find out which firmware does what?
I have the TIM D500E. I would love to remove the carrier branding from my menu , without losing voice commands & EDGE.
Can someone please recommend how I should go about accomplishing this?
Also... Are there experienced people who would be willing to flash for others?

quoting the original post was a tad lame. the firmware i flashd mine wit was the d500xaeb1 it doesnt have hte barrier or carrier displayed and works fine without any problems. i am not sure what this EDGE thing is

Posted by: blupixelz

i just got the cable today that i ordered from germany!

i flashed the phone and it works fine!

thanks.

Posted by: hugeeug

does it really take 3 hours as noted?

Posted by: blupixelz

i don't exactly remember. but i think it took about 2 hours for me.

Posted by: hugeeug

I read elsewhere that you can flash thd D500 with a normal USB data cable....here is the quote from another site

Quote:
The only thing that i have discovered is that you can flash the fone with a usb cable using CoronaDownloader_v32. (Select the correct com port for your usb cable - mine was com 6 and set the com speed to 921600) It cuts flash time to around 20mins compared with 90 mins by serial cable. (And does away with 9v battery).

I have a USB data cable I bought off of Ebay. The serial # is WT048000317. I can't seem to flash my phone with it. I take out my sim car first then connect usb data cable. The phone "No SIM card" and has a "SOS" option at the bottom. I clicked on start in the Corona downloader and it says power on phone. I did that and nothing happens. My phone is setup up to use com 5 but it didnt work. I tried com1 as well. Any ideas? Does your data cable have same serial #? Also, I went to cell phone shop and they had a samsung data cable with a switch in it. One side said D/L and the other said data (no batteries involved). Thanks for the help

Anything I can do with it?

I have the same cable as you described (One side said D/L and the other said data), will it work for flashing the phone?

I think it will. If my cable wont work, I'll go down to the cell phone store to flash the firmware.

Posted by: hugeeug

I just tried every type of port and different programs and I still cant flash my phone with the usb data cable I'm using I tried Corona downloader....I tried Optiflash's backup but still nothing. ****!

Posted by: xux99

Flashing cables are special cables used for flashing only. You can't use a data cable to flash the phone. Use a serial or USB flashing cable and follow the instructions here.

Posted by: genXevo

So does anyone know know for sure that there is a USB Flash cable out there for a D500? i'm considering buying one off ebay, but i wouldn't want to risk the seller not knowing what he/she is actually selling

Posted by: bananacat

does a flashing cable have to have a 9v battery in it coz i bout wot i thought was a flashing cable and it didnt have one!!!!

Posted by: genXevo

it only has a 9V battery because there no power running thru the serial port, with USB wouldn't need the battery

Posted by: Romeo0119

Does anyone know if something like this would work with flashing or updating the firm ware? I dont wana waste money on something that doesnt work.

Posted by: A|ex

I heard that there is a special data cable which can be used for both flashing and data transfer, from what i gather carphone warehouse DO NOT stock flasher cables. You must have a datacable which doesnt support flashing

can someone tell me what kinda firmware i have? its weird D50CDZEB7 .. should i update it to a newer one or is this firmware good enough?

Posted by: IsLNdbOi

Ok, does anyone know how to restore backed up firmware? My D500 came with Orange branded firmware (with the littel sidebar / shortcut bar). I flashed it with unbranded firmware with the voice dialing. Voice dialing is nice, but it confuses about half of my contacts with other contacts (for example it keeps thinking I'm saying "Mom" when I am saying "Home").

I miss the sidebar / shortcut bar too and didn't realize how much I actually used it when I had it. Anyway, when I backed up my Orange firmware with Corona Downloader, I did a full NAND + NOR dump and got two files (I already changed them to the appropriate TFS and CLA extensions), BUT Corona Downloader didn't create a CFG file which it says it needs to flash the backup.

Anyone know where I can get a matching CFG file for my backed up Orange firmware or if I can make one myself?

This is the S/W info. my Orange branded firmware showed:

S/W Version
D500EBVED1
xaed2 Orange

H/W Version
MP 3.700

Hello,
It's impossible to recreate the *.cfg file and impossible to put your firmware in the phone (that which you have to safeguard). Here a link for download your original firmware:
- D500BVEB1_ED1 - France(FTM) UK(Orange), Netherlands(ONL), Switzerland(ORG). Excuse my english I'm french. Each *.TFS file have a her proper *.cfg . All the informations in the *.CFG file describe the rights directory and the rights files that the TFS contains. I've tested with a Cfg file of an other Firmware (D500_modded_by _Merten3000 and D500BVEB1_ED1 ) the flash succeeded not. The format of safeguards 128 and 30 Mo does not correspond to the size of the firmware downloaded. When we open the *.tfs safeguarded with Resmasn the images are truncated.

Posted by: IsLNdbOi

Thanks Azev! Do you know if any of the Orange branded firmware have the voice dialaing / voice commands feature?

Posted by: IsLNdbOi

Also, what's the point of being able to dump / make a backup of your firmware with Corona Downloader if you can't restore the backup because it doesn't make a CFG file needed for doing the restore?

Posted by: Azev

Hello,
There does not exist for the moment of Orange firmware with the voice dialing. The backup is not used for nothing. This must be used to be reassured in order to make the flash under better conditions

Posted by: arrrmand

sort of an FYI if it hasn't been stated in this thread already. i just used a regular serial cable without a 9v battery and successfully flashed my phone as well as transferred some picture files onto my computer from it. it is very stressful though worrying that the battery may die, but if it's fully charged, the backup and flash steps can be performed without problems.

Posted by: IsLNdbOi

You don't even have to backup your firmware as there is no way to restore it since Corona Downloader doesn't make a *.cfg file.

I have a data link cable with "Data" and "dl" switch. Can I use that to flash my d500 without using a 9V battery? Model # pcb093lbe

That Data cable is not for the D500. It is for the V20x, S20x, S30x, X42x, E105, X105, E31x, E71x, D41x, P107 phones.

Posted by: chomper81

does anyone know what firmware if any can get rid of the menu bar and time and date bar on the idle screen? kinda like how the e730 can use a full screen wallpaper and the those info bars are transparent.

Posted by: Cash*Converter

Like someone else asked.. where do you get the Corona Software?

Posted by: sayeds33

can you use any serial cable or does it have to be a specific cable, with the 9v thing?

Posted by: michealcara

maybe i am on the wrong thread may i know where can i buy the HP 6500 dictionary APP?

thanks

Posted by: kimnkk

If i get the USB cable - how do i find out what COM port to use and what 'number', i.e 115200, 230400, 460800 or 921600?

Any help at all would be _greatly_ appreciated

Also, if you fudge up the firmware update - does that turn your phone into an expensive paperweight? Or can you 'reflash' it?

Posted by: Mango808

To figure out what COM port to use, you need to go into the Device Manager and see which one it is being used on.

As for the 115200, 230400, 460800 or 921600 numbers, those just refer to the Modem speed it would be used on if it was being used as a phone modem.

Thanks so much mate! I think i've got an idea where to head now . I checked with google and found USB virtual COM port drivers - will the cable be supplied with this driver?

Also, do you recommend me go with the USB cable or COM one?

Thanks
Kim.

Edit: How do i find out which COM port the USB device is operating on? I've looked at all my current USB devices but none have any detail on their COM port.

Cant get rid of phone lock using corana? Do I ave to dump something, any help would be great...

For all those looking for a D500 USB flash cable - I seem to have found one

http://www.completefone.com/xcart/p...0&cat=76&page=1

Less than £9 including VAT and delivery (cheapest delivery)

FWIW: I am kinda pissed about my new D500 - the firmware truly sucks and trying to find an answer abut which firmware to install seems impossible! Anyone got any tips?
