Can someone tell me if this is a defect phone or software, etc ?

Im trying to use TeleNav and everything works fine, but the only problem i have is that it fails to get a GPS signal. Sometimes it will get one and sometimes it wont (most of the time not), my backyard is clear of trees and it still does not get a signal, somtimes i will get a signal in my house for a few seconds.

My brothers Telenav on his 730 gets a signal in less than 5 seconds comapred to my 860.

do a hard refresh in the gps setup of the phone, and do that in a totally wide open area, like a baseball field etc, then i have noticed it does work faster, but if you still have problems, visit a service center, you very well could have a faulty product.....

go into the gps portion of the phone, menu, then the satelite, i think its current posistion (i dont have a phone with me) then hit refresh

Yes, it's GPS > Position > Refresh (left soft key). Agree with your assessment, dstar. --BAM

Thanks for the help.

The phone gps feature works fine, standing in my back yard i get continuous gps signals using the phone gps software.

It seems like its something with TeleNav but i am unsure, standing in the backyard it just says "Reading GPS" and will stay that way for a few minutes and then say it cannot find a signal.

Since i cannot make it to a service center if i call nextel up will they allow me to use there DOOR-DOOR service ? I have NSP.

Its free correct to use that option correct ?

Uh, not sure here about this one. I doubt nextel would even replace it via NSP at all due to this being a third party application issue and NOT a nextel related issue. If it was the handset's built in A-GPS reciever not getting a signal, it would be one thing but this is a third party app software not working, nextel has no responsibility over this and wouldnt cover it via nsp or warranty. Call telenav about it.
BTW What version of telenav are you using? I believe the newest(currently in my handset ) is 3.6, you may want to simply try deleting the app and reinstalling it. It would probably take care of it. Sounds like the app itself may not have set up the proper permissions to access the GPS chip during the initial setup.
If after reinstalling it, it still doesnt work, you'll need to call Telenav(be sure to have your subscription info handy, they'll ask for it) or just email them from the webpage once you sign in with your username and pw combo and explain the issue.

1.) Set your GPS permissions from the phone to "ask". Start Telenav. It should ask for permission, hit yes. give it sometime and you should be good to go.

2.) Exit the app and set the phones permissions to "allow" and the next time you start up Telenav it should connect automatically.

If, in step 1. it does not "ask" to connect then the JAVA app is FUBAR'ed. Reinstall the app from Nextels download site. On the 860 you do not have to un-install the original. After the reinstall has completed, exit, scroll to Telenav in "JAVA Apps", hit the menu key and select "Update". If you have any problems ask for help In this thread.

I am moving it to the Software forum fella's...

I860 is less than one year old and is still under standard warrenty by motorola.
what you do is call motorola and tell them your problem and do a standard warrenty replacment. takes about 1 week to 1 1\2 weeks if you tell them you need your phone and just to send you a new one they will if you give then a credit card number incase you dont ship it back or it is water damaged or physical dammaged . they will ship you a new one and you simply ship back the old one . your credit card will not be charged at all once you ship them back the old one .

Thanks for restating that yo dude, much appreciated. Just wish folks would read the entire thread before posting. BTW Congrats on the mod "upgrade", good to see(though should have happened a LOOOOOONG time ago IMHO).
