Any good Music player software aside from WMP out there?

Windows Media Player 9, while good, its an unstable peace a cr@p that has no options. One can set no order of the songs unless you name them one way, to scroll down songs [specially for me since i have a lot] takes forever, no equalizer, no way to fast forward or rewind a song, and the shuffle action repeats a few songs every now and then as opposed to play randomly all different songs until all are played.

Anyway, does anybody know of any other [preferably free] music players for the MPX 220 [or windows mobile 2003 SE]. BetaPlayer is also ok, but to me is more of a video player than anything. any ideas?

I just make playlists with winamp (what i use on the desktop) and betaplayer understands those, which is great.

Otherwise nero (the folks who make burning rom) have a beta audio player out there which sucks, there's a non-freeware player i've never used out there called simple tunes... it looks to be pretty good.

Thanks. Any other ideas?

I like Pocket Music the best... available on Handango

...Music Box kept locking up and the user interface is a massive P.I.T.A.

Possibly making some playlist would help with a few of your issues. WMP does not know how to use the standard (M3U) playlist (like Betaplayer can), but it does use the Microsoft format ASX playlists.

Here is what a sample ASX file looks like. In this example, my songs are on the storage card, in a folder named MP3s ("\Storage Card\MP3s").

<asx version="3">

<ref href = "\Storage Card\MP3s\song1.mp3"/>

<ref href = "\Storage Card\MP3s\song2.mp3"/>

<ref href = "\Storage Card\MP3s\song3.mp3"/>

<ref href = "\Storage Card\MP3s\song4.mp3"/>

</asx>

There is a of Playlist Manager that some people have found helpful at air***ev.com (and it is free): http://www.air***ev.com/downloads.asp?cat=Applications

FYI: change the *** above to the 3 letters "F A G".

Do you make this .asx file in a text editor and then save it as for example: playlist.asx and save it to your storage card then point WMP to that file file.

Of couse I am sure this playlist will only work if the songs I refrence the tags to are in the same directory? or can they be in a different directory? Thanks for any help dchester. By the way I really like you site, its very informative I just need to find the time to try some of the things you suggest.

You can make the ASX file with a text editor, or you can download a playlist app, like the one on air***ev.com (which will make the playlist for you). Also, the playlist does NOT need to be in the same place as the MP3s. The playlist just needs to have the full path to where the MP3s are (like in my example above). In fact the playlist manager (at least the older version that I still have) puts the playlist under the start menu, while my MP3s are on my MiniSD card.
