FYI Mobile IM and Firmware Version for 9900

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I installed Mobile IM via GIN back in October 2004 and have no way of removing it from my phone. By contacting Verizon Wireless several times, including a trip to a store, I have found that I need to get my phone flashed. Not that his is new news, I'm just recapping. So...

My first trip to a store revealed that they couldn't access the app by any means and need to flash the phone. BUT since I put a custom faceplate on my phone, my warranty is void and they won't flash it. Arg!

A call to a tech about the problem got the same response, I need to flash the phone. He kindly put a note in my acct that a store tech needs to flash my phone. He suggested that I put the original faceplate back on and maybe go to a a diff store.

I also asked if there were any firmware updates. The version they are currently using is the same one that my phone is running, 131.038. (Menu/9/3)

I'll let you know how the whole 'flashing' thing turns out. I was told that they can flash the phone w/o losing my pics/vids/contacts... I'd back up my info with a datacable if that were possible, but that 's a whole different topic (If it is possible now and I am apparently unaware, please let me know.)

I went to have my phone flashed at a store and they couldn't do it. I don't know why, but they couldn't. SO... They are shipping me a new phone which I have to bring back into the store so they can set it up and transfer over SOME of the stuff from my current phone. I think they said they can get the Contacts and Scheduler info over. Any media files I want to keep will have to be emailed off and emailed back on. ARG! I'm going to call and see if they'll credit me the charges incurred for emailing all my junk back and forth.

I got the new phone in the mail and went to the store this weekend. The tech moved my contacts from my old phone to my new phone without any problems. I emailed all my pics and tones to my personal email account and then emailed them back to my phone. I didn't use Verizon's Pix Place. So... My phone works, Mobile IM is no longer installed, my contacts are still in place and my pics/tones are on my new phone. The pics are smaller than they were before. I seem to remember hearing about them shrinking images, but I thought that was only through Pix Place. I also called Verizon and they have agreed to credit me the charges for the 41 emails I needed to transfer the pics/tones form my old phone to the new phone. All in all, it wasn't too bad of an experience, but I really would have liked this to work properly from the beginning.

Can you please let me know what the current version is on the phone. Also do you notice any improvements. I have the same version as you had, 131.038.

Thanks!

The version installed on my new phone is the same as the old one, 131.038. I haven't noticed any improvements. Right before I swapped phones, I was experiencing a Scheduler problem. On the normal display, it always showed the event warning, regardless if there was an event scheduled. If I experience this again on my new phone, I'll post something about it.

I posted this before. If you have a data cable, you can fix the Mobile IM problem, I've done it.

A data cable costs a couple of bucks on ebay, and maybe sooner or later we'll be able to do the pix transfers and stuff, who knows. But as far as mobileIM goes, problem solved.

Here's a copy'n'paste of the REMOVAL and if you so desire REINSTALL procedures (kinda chopped up because they were posted on another forum before, I didn't save the original 'type up').

This is long, but some instructions are repeated. Read the whole
thing.

Use GAGIN or QPST.

Instructions for only removing the MobileIM application.

I have the datacable from 3GCables.com, and their "toshiba" driver
installed.

Install and load up GAGIN (need a link? let me know).

First, I deleted all of the files in my "4192" folder (apparantly
some kind of "name" or serial number or something for MobileIM, may
not be the same on every phone).

Then I was able to delete the 4192 FOLDER on the left side of the
GAGIN window (where it shows the filesystem tree).

Finally (after restarting both GAGIN and my 9900), I was able to
delete the 4192.mif file from the root directory of the phone (on the
RIGHT side of the GAGIN window).

With no other GIN apps installed, it says I'm down to 17% usage, and
356K/1.99MB of my GIN space free. Don't know how accurate that is to
having NO programs installed, I don't remember how much free space I
had prior to playing around with Get It Now and downloading programs
and uninstalling programs, etc... Don't know if there's any clutter
left for me to get rid of, but that should do the trick pretty well.

The BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH THIS, right now, is that I cannot find
MobileIM in the "GET MESSAGING" section of GIN. So I cannot
reinstall it, because the GIN network thinks it's still installed.
But I'm sure I can resolve this with VerizonWireless at a later date.
****look below to resolve this problem****

Just thought everyone should be made aware! Best of luck!

Instructions for removing / reinstalling (follow only the steps that
apply if you've already uninstalled) (thanks to "VZWStud").

1. Start program in folder '/Z'

2. Open 'brew' folder

3. Right-click & choose Delete on these:
- 10923.mif (the verification app for Mobile IM)
- 4972.mif (the actual Mobile IM app)
- 10923 folder
- 4972 folder

4. Open 'download' folder

5. Delete 'dlog.bin' file (this is the actual log file created with
date and time when you download an app)

6. Restart your phone

7. Re-enter Get-It-Now and redownload Mobile IM!

* Please note, I had no other apps on my phone when I did this so I
do not know if it will cause them to not function. But I would assume
in that case you would have to delete their corresponding .mif and
folder, and they would allow you to redownload also. And I am not
responsible if you screw up your phone.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD LUCK!

I've read those posts before, but don't have a datacable. I decided to not get a datacable for my 9900 until it becomes more useful. If someone figures out how to access the pics/tones or apps, I'll probably get one. As far as Mobile IM for GIN, Verizon should really be responsible for providing support, which they did. So... when are you going to figure out how to access the files/apps?

lol, I wish I could... but maybe I'll work on Ring+Vib, first... I mean, after all, I'm finally on summer vacay!
