I got my cable and BitPim software today and was able to remove the Verizon banner, as well as upload pics. But when I try to do ringtones, specifically adding a renamed .mp3 - to - .mid to my ringtone folder I get a screen that requests me to convert it. I edited/clipped my ringtones with Cool Edit Pro, which does not have a MIDI "save as" option.
What free software is available to save mp3's as midi's? I figured I'd ask the pros. :-)

You don't need to convert the mp3 to a midi. Bitpim is telling you that the mp3 file is still too big. I'm not sure about Cool Edit, but with Audacity there are a few different ways to make the file smaller without sacrificing quality.

[Edit] You still need to change .mp3 to .mid, you just don't re-encode the file.

My file sizes end up in the 3-400k range. Evidently too big for BitPim to do anything with.
I'll download Audacity and use that trick if I can't get Cool Edit Pro to bust it down in size. I know when I select "new" it wants me to set the bit rate and sample rate. I'll use the values you guys suggested of 16000 and 32.

I just can't seem to get them into my phone. Can somebody help? I've tried emailing the MID file as an attachment, and although I get the email, it doesn't let me do anything w/ the attachment. If I tried to download (or receive the file) it, I get a "network authentication failed". Any ideas?

I may just need to go buy a cable.

Do you have a Mac or PC? I've found that renaming the .mp3 to .mid on the Mac and emailing won't work the way it does on the PC. I even managed to pull it off using virtual PC on my mac. I don't know if it's the Mac email software, or if the Mac is "too smart" and modifies the file when you change the extension, screwing it up for the phone..
