Can an LG VX7000 be connected to a Mac laptop?

I have an LG VX7000 phone and have the Mobile Office Kit for it. Is there a way my Mac Titanium Powerbook can see this phone? I'd like to be able to download photos from the phone as well as keep the address book on my computer.

Thanks,
Diane

Moved to the software forum.

I have vx8000 and I use Virtual PC 7 with my g5 notebook. I wasn't able to find a software driver for Mac.

I also have a pc, but have been unable to transfer photos from the phone directly to the pc. Have you been able to do that?

Thanks

Diane

I had a bad ttime getting mine to work but I think in the end it comes down to the right cable and the stars aligning just right. I bought a cable from a cell phone supply store on the web it was a straight cable and never did work. I got the Future dial cable for my girlfriends 6000 and it worked fine on the PC with the futuredial driver but was slow. I was able to get my 8000 to work on a PC with that cable but it was a tight fit. Now on to the MAC I plugged the cable in and opened the preferences and set it to 8000 and on the port setting clicked browse. It showed what ports were there. Including one that said it was unavailable. Just above that one was one that was so I highlighted it and clicked ok and the phone was then recognised in the file system settings. It took a couple of connection tries each time but worked slowly. I just bought the Verizon Data Kit for the 7000 (8000) and it works like a charm. The port is recognised and it downloads pictures very quickly. I didn't have to load any driver on the MAC. The PC will need the driver that is on the cd. Hope this helps.

So are you saying that the official Verizon Data Kit for the LG 7000 allows you to hook the LG 8000 to your mac? Or did it have problems?

Of the 3 cables I tried the Verizon cable worked best and fastest. I had really no use for the Software as I am using Bitpim. I loaded the driver on my PC but not the rest of the software and it worked great to. By the way it all works well with Tiger as well as Panther.
I do think on the MAC it is important to set the port manually with the browse button on the preferences. P lug the phone and cable into the MAC and let it sit for a couple of minutes to set itself up and you should find it. Hope it works well for you. I hate using PC's after switching to a MAC and this works well for me.

Randy, thanks for your posts. I have the Mobile Office Kit which includes a USB connector cable for the LG VX6100 and LG VX7000. Do I need to use Bitpim (I know nothing about this software - but can check it out).

Originally, I did connect the phone to my Mac (running 10.3.9) but never saw a connection. You mention setting the "port manually with the browse button on the preferences". I'm pretty knowledgable about the Mac, but don't know what you're referring to here.

I just replugged the 7000 into a USB port on the Mac and opened Network. I do see LG CDMA USB Modem, but don't see where I can download photos. Any suggestions?

The software included with the Mobile Office kit is only good on a PC. It really isn't anything I was interested in so all I used was the driver on a PC. But onto the MAC.
Install the BitPim software.
Plug in the phone and start the program
open the preference and choose your phone
Where it says Port and I think the default is automatic click on browsw and when that window loads highlight your cable and click ok

For me I am not interested in all of the other functions of the program so you can play with them and see what they do.

Click on file system and wait a few secons and then click on the little arrow head and your phones file system will show up
I don't know if the 7000 is set up like the 8000 but if it is your pictures will be in dload / img and your ringtones will be in user/sound/ringer
Your movies will be in Brew/Media
Be careful what you mess with you can kill your phone very easily.
Also remember you can't just load a picture or ringtone you have to replace something (overwrite) to get it to show up and if you want to delete something do it from the phone offline. Doing it on the program seems to leave a blank file on the phone. I hope this helps. I had a heck of a time getting this to work so I want to help out if I can. I will check back if you nedd any more help. Remember!!! BE CAREFUL!!! Good Luck!

Diane, Sorry when I was talking about the browse button on the MAC I meant on the BITPIM software. I don't think the phone will show up as a drive or disk on it's own. As far as I know this software is the only MAC software to do this. I was really relieved to see that it still worked after I upgraded to Tiger.
I think you can backup your pictures and ringtones from the main functions but all I was interested in was getting the pictures manually from the phone. By the way a Verizon guy I bought the mobile kit from asked me if I was going to backup my phonebook and I said no just get the picures and movies and he said "No that is impossible and can't be done". He just about choked when I held up the phone and showed him the 21 minute portion of a video and 4 full leangth mp3's I put on the phone. I just said "wanna bet"
Putting the video on is a whole new set of struggles but if your phone can hold it let me know and I will tell you how. You will need a pc to do that unfortunatly. Take care.

Randy, I downloaded and installed BITPIM and connected my phone to my iMac (20" 1.8 GHz, 1.5GB DDR SDRAM running OS X Vers. 10.3.9). I've selected my phone (VX7000), but when I click "browse" to select the port, I get the rotating "beach ball" and the program doesn't seem to go any farther. If I click "OK" the program opens up, but I don't find my phone.

My main reason for wanting to connect the phone is the same as yours - mostly to download photos and movies (though I haven't used that feature yet). Working on the address book will be a bonus.

What am I missing in trying to actually see my phone?

BTW, I'm happy you're enjoying the Mac. We have 4 (we use them primarily for graphics) and I much prefer them to my pc. We haven't switched to Tiger from Panther yet, though we will fairly soon. I want to make sure we'll not experience any incompatibilities with our other software.

Diane, You are doing everything right. When you click browse a window should open describing your port and let you highlight it and click ok. The only thing I can think of is you have some sort of conflict. Try disonnecting any other USB devices and maybe reboot the computer and restart the phone before you start BitPim. I have a 12" IBook G4 1.05 GHZ with 512mb ram and Tiger. I really don't think that the difference in the 7000/8000 should matter. Really seems like some kind of conflict. Sorry thats all I can think of. Good luck and let me know how it turns out. I will plug some other things in and try to duplicate your problem. Make sure you have the phone started andd connected for a minute or so before you start BitPim.

After disconnecting other USB devices, restaring the Mac and the phone, I'm still getting the same result. I have a PowerBook and will try installing PITPIM on that and see if I'm more successful with that. Will let you know.

Randy, you've been a great help. I really do appreciate it.

BITPIM installed on my PowerBook and I'm able to see dload / img and my photos by file name. I've tried to click and drag the photos to a folder on my desktop, but wasn't able to. How do I download the photos? Is downloading movies done the same way?

Posted by: randy050

You are almost there. All you have to do is CTRL click the picture or movie and a menu pops up. Then click save and save it where you want it. Like I said before I reccomend you deleteing the pictures manually from the phone itself because it seems that if you do it from the software it leaves a blank file showing on the phone. Drag and drop doesn't seem like it works in this but hey what the heck. We have a a MAC version to use. I'm glad it worked for you.

Posted by: randy050

The overwrite feature is how you put pictures on your phone. You can't just put a picture on it. It won't show up. You have to take a picture or movie and then overwrite it with a picture from your computer.

Posted by: slaninko

Randy, I've downloaded the photos. Also, I've deleted them from the phone and not the software.

The address book is the newest issue. When I tried to download it, I get the message: "The phonebook on your phone is partially corrupt....." I think I saw something about this on BITPIM site. Have you experienced this? Also, have you added ringtones from the Mac to the phone?

Posted by: randy050

Yes I had the same error message with the address book. There is an entry in the help section somewhere about that. I am not sure there is really a workaround for that without erasing it and starting over.
Ringtones are like the pictures. You have to replace a file (overwrite) that is already there. The 800 has a funtion to make a recording such as a voice for a ringtone and then you just overwrite that with an mp3. BUT mp3's can get pretty big. If you have ever played around with sound editing software that is what you need. Something to make a shorter clip of a song and reduce it's bitrate from the usual 128 to around 64 (or smaller. I am a professional sound engineer so I am pretty good at that sort of thing and have the software which is pretty expensive. My MAC came with an editor called sound studio that is pretty basic. I have to admit that I made mine on a PC with Cool Edit Pro mainly because I know it very well but put it on the phone with my MAC. My girlfriend is a huge Bon Jovi Fan and I filled her phone with clips of their songs and she is loving it. If you can't edit a song I would suggest searching the internet for some sites that have downloadable clips and then you can put them on yourself by replacing the ones that came with the phone. I don't know where the sound files are stored on your 7000 but carefully look through all of the folders and you will find them. Good Luck with that.
If you decide to upgrade your MACs to TIGER please make sure you repair your discs and permissions and disable and unplug everything and all will go well. It only killed one app for me but I am very happy with it.

Posted by: randy050

Forgot one other thing. If you do any sound file editing and want to replace a phone file with it you have to change it from .mp3 to .mid to get it to work. It's no real conversion, just changing the extention does the trick. You will get a warning popup but just say ok and it will work. I hope this has been helpful.

I want to sync my address book and calendar (I'm running OS X/Tiger) with my VX6100. Is it possible to use iSync with a data cable? If not, what is the best way for me to do this?

TIA,

Jon

Posted by: randy050

I think it is highly unlikely that Isync will do anything with the phone. It seems you need some kind of special software to recognise and work with the phone file system. BitPim is the only MAC software that seems to work and that is sometimes a struggle. Read the other posts in this thread and you will see how to do it although if syncing your phone book is what you want to do you might have a problem as some of us have found out. Just getting the pictures and video seems to be the easiest and some people on this forum will argue that. Good luck.

Posted by: jonro

Thanks for that info. I decided to exchange the LG for a Motorola V710, which will synchronize with a cable (lame, but it gets the job done).

Posted by: slaninko

Randy I want to thank you again for all the patient and wonderful time you've given me. So far, I'm able to do exactly what I wanted to do with the LG to Mac connection. I was also successful in connecting my husband's LG 6100.

You have made a somewhat frustrating situation rapidly turn into success.

Regards,
Diane

You are very welcome. With the awful state of customer service, (like the outsourced to some distant country that doesn't speak English kind) Forums are really the best way to get help. The one minor glitch in my Tiger installation was solved that way. Glad I could help.
