i cant figure out how to change the gprs settings so i can use the net on my phone...... any ideas

um.. did you order the sk service? if you didnt then you cannot use the net on your sidekick. i didnt know that the sidekicks use gprs

well its the hiptop colour which im guessing is the same thing... and i have it unlocked in ottawa under Rogers.... i turn it on and it says Network not available... gprs/apn settings might be incorect but you can still use the phone

sorry i still dont know what your talking about. even if it is a sidekick color it still needs a sidekick/hiptop data plan.

Well.. the only provider for Hiptop data access Is Fido... but I know you can roam with it on rogers. Regardless though, you would need a hiptop Dataplan from Fido to get GPRS on it. Unless of course someone has done some interesting hacking & wants to share

from what i was told you cannot get data coverage while roaming on another network. for some reason while im roaming on cingular i still get data but the web browser times 75% of the time.... im not sure if this is just a mistake on my phones part network but it does say cingular wireless on the bottom of the screen and i still get data sometimes... you should just call danger 650 289 5000 or your cellular service provider.

Generally speaking, you should be able to get data service when roaming on another carrier though there's no real hard and fast rule when it works and when it doesn't, as long as you have the Data Roaming box checked in your Wireless settings.

However, in California, T-Mo and Cingular share towers through a Shared Assets program so even if your phone says Cingular you're still on T-Mobile's data network and not roaming, so that *should* work all the time.

And please don't call Danger for data service or roaming issues - they can't help you - those are all issues that your carrier needs to address.

Onza, you get the message you're getting (gprs settings may be incorrect) when the network can't be reached. It's very unlikely your network settings are incorrect (they're typically not changeable to anything useful) and that's more indicative of a problem on the carrier end not supporting your data connection. you need to make sure your account is set up with the hiptop data plan and then things should work a lot better. You're far more productive dealing with them about this than us.

Fido used to, if Rogers bought them then you may be able to get it.

The hiptop network connection is different than other phones. If your carrier doesn't *specifically* have a connection to Danger's backend servers for the hiptop, all the GPRS settings in the world aren't going to help you.

ok then that settles it then.... it will never work on net because when i call rogers and tell them what i have there like " what the hell is that "

Posted by: jgeorge

Sorry onza... The hiptop does not actually connect directly to the network so if you can't get hiptop data service for your device theres really no way to make it work.

Well yes, the sidekick does use GPRS but it doesn't connect directly to the network like a regular GPRS phone does - it uses GPRS to connect to danger's backend servers and connects to the rest of the net from there. It's very akin to a VPN-like setup. So yes, GPRS, but no, it still wont work without the hiptop data plan from your carrier.
