MPx 220 Update failure. What is wrong?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

So, I downloaded all the various versions to play with - as well as the installer. Unpacked the appropriate version (was trying to go from ATTWS .343 to Cing 1.30 and play with 1.25). Made sure that I had smartfon.inf installed.

Started the install tool, waited. Turned the phone off, removed the battery, connected it when it told me (don't know about not connecting power- USB is always hot), waited, got a USB failure. Again and again. Uinstalled and reinstalled driver.

What am I doing wrong?!

Make sure you remove the SIM as well and make sure your battery is fully charged!

The same thing happened to me when I tried updating the first time. The ROM loader is picky sometimes. Keep trying, it will work.

You have to remove the SIM card too? I was having the same problems when trying to do the Motorola 1.30 rom.

Yes and to be on the safe side the miniSD card as well.

Just do what the guys above have told you, we all know what the instruction says but if those guys had the similar exprience and managed to slove their problem then why you worried about the instructions???

I know, but you want that thing fully charged!

*IF* you flash your ROM and then you place a HALF (50%) charged battery in the phone thinks its a new battery and then makes the 50% -> 100%. In reality, the max you can charge the battery is 50% because at 50%, the phone thinks that is 100%.

Does that make sense? I'm having trouble putting it into words!

It does make sense. Now if I can just get it to work.....~~~!!

You are using the WM2002 modem USB driver right? (smartphon.inf)

The generic USB driver on Motorola's website will not work!

smartFon, I believe? Or is there another? Anyway, I am pretty sure that I am.

I am using Windows 2000. How do you install it and where is it available?

worse: if you flash w/ the battery in, you stand the chance of frying your phone

i havent had issues with using a half charged battery - ive put an almost dead batter in after a flash and had no issues. maybe i just got lucky.

but... for sure dont leave the battery in! i learned this the hard way

LINK to Smartphone WM2002 modem driver (right-click, save as....)

1) Remove battery, SIM, & storage card (if any) from the phone and connect to Motorala data cable.
2) Connect data cable to PC and windows should prompt you about finding a new device. The install driver wizard should pop-up and you want to go to "advanced" so ou can manually tell the PC where the driver is.
3) Browse to where you saved the driver (smartfon.inf) and select it.
4) now just keep hitting next unitl it installs it.
**you may get a warning about the driver not being signed and you want to chose "continue anyway".**

laskuh - My buddy didn't have a fully charged battery when he flashed his phone and it screwed up the battery when he put it back in. He couldn't get it to fully charge after that! He had to end up buying a new battery.

I know! That site is great. I don't like their desktop charger though. Motorola makes a desktop charger that has a cradle for the phone and behind that is a cradle for an extra battery.

Dual Desktop Charging Station - BDCA118

OK, THAT worked. I had left the USB cable in, and it wasn't until I pulled it out and plugged it back in that the system recognized it had a new device, and I followed the rest of your steps and it worked!!! Thank you, thank you.

Now it thinks it is orange rather than blue, although it has an ATTWS SIM in it....now to wait for the official release.....!!!!

Glad I could help!

Hey Alberto any noticable differences between the at#t .343 and cingular 1.3 i just updated and really see no differrence except my camera makes a sound now, where with the at&t version it was silent and also the order of start menus is slightly different and obviously cingular branding.

Actually no. On purpose I flashed it with the 1.30 (1.030) Cingular ROM. The camera makes a shutter sound, although I can use a registry editor to change a 1 to a 0 and get rid of that if I wanted to.. The menus are organized slightly differently, and it is, of course, now branded Cingular rather than ATTWS. I decided to go that way, as not knowing what the upgrade from Motorola would be, I was afraid that it would be specific to Cingular and fail if applied to ATTWS, like it did before when they put out 1.30. This way I would hope that it will see it as a Cing product and upgrade it.

I decided not to go with the 1.25, as I am satisfided with my volimes, and again I did not want conflicts when the time came to upgrade to the next release....

The phone is still locked, incidentally. It is now branded Cing, but can only use ATTWS SIMs.
