Samsung P207 Questions & Answers Only...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: blaze0ne

I just received my Samsung P207. I signed up to a 2 year contract with cingular through www.cingular.com and got the phone and data cable plus shipping for $110. Not too bad for a brand new phone thats not available in stores.
I'm migrating from the innostream 90, which as opposed to many others, I enjoy and will probably still use it as a back up phone.

Anyway the point of this thread is to ask any questions regarding the P207. I will try to answer them all; hopefully with help from others. Let me know if anybody wants any pictures of the phone.

My questions are:
How and which software do I use to connect the phone to the computer. As stated above, I bought the cingular data cable which came with no software!
I'm gonna try EasyGPRS and i'll post my experience.

I just tried taking several pictures using the different resolutions.
Pictures takin at 176x160 fit perfectly as a wallpaper, so I guess that is the resolution you need.
Try that size and post if it works.

Posted by: MDDrew

nope tried a jpg and it didnt fill, samsung needs to do like all other phone makers and let the wallpaper be the size the screen is supposed to be, what is so hard about that

Posted by: JBX74205

It looks to me like the top part of the screen can't be filled. The signal strength and battery meter have a white background and it seems like it's permanent. I've also tried 170x160 and it didn't work.

I have a question. Does anyone hear a hissing noise in the background when making calls? I do.

I am also curious to hear what folks think of the phone. I'm contemplating upgrading. This phone is on my list (along with a few other brands). Cingular does have a 30 day period to test out the phone.

How does the phone feel (quality or cheapish)
What can you customize (screen brightness, camera sounds? etc.) These are some of the things I'm interested in knowing about.

Thanks in advance!

Just got mine yesterday, here are a few preliminary thoughts: The phone feels a little cheap to me (upgdraded from the SGH-E600, which is a little tank!). It's about the same heighth as my old phone, but about 4 mm wider.

After some repeated voice training, the phone got really warm?!? The voice features are cool and work pretty well. You have to pause between words for text messages, but it's a lot better than typing them out. I think it's a common misconception you can just talk normally and it will recognize your words...it doesn't. YOu can also check the status of the battery & signal strength simply by saying "Check Status." You can lookup an address entry by voice, as well as dial a contact by name. You can even switch to an application by saying Goto [app]. Or say "send text to [person]" and it will prompt you with the new text message screen.

There's a proprietary headphone/microphone jack on the side, with a flap that WILL come off eventually (the jack looks similar to a mini-USB). The phone does not come with a headphone/microphone. The phone shipped with the new 64k SIM
that reads Cingular Wireless on it.

I bought mine for $79 + shipping & tax through an upgrade plan. However, I soon learned that in order to activate it, I had to agree to a 2 year contract. Mind you, I've never been in a contract nor do I plan on signing one. My 32k SIM does work in the phone, but I'm guessing it won't hold as many pics/vids/ringtones/etc. as the 64k version (otherwise I'd just leave it in there).

Does anybody know if I can somehow activate my new SIM with my old SIM's information? Or another way to get around it?

What other phones are you contemplating and why? Just curious, I looked at some other models as well. ;-)

Posted by: AriesG

Thanks for the info! I know that the issue with the phone heating up was brought up in another forum on the web. that makes me wonder regarding safety issues.

when I chatted with a Cingular rep he mentioned that if and when I upgrade that he would have to send me a new SIM since mine is older (I have a trusty Nokia 3650). What would be nice is being able to "upload" the sim information somewhere safe then "download" it once you have the new sim installed so that you don't lose any of your contact information. Does something like that exist?

I personally would prefer to stick with Nokia although I don't have the patience to wait. The P207 lacks a number of things I've grown accustomed to (bluetooth, etc.). Cingular has a decent deal with the Sony Ericsson z500a which is attractive. I also am looking at the following:
Samsung p777
Motorola v551
and Sony Ericsson s710 (although that's a little out of my price range).

I'm looking for a phone with good scheduling capabilities (maybe synch with Outlook), a reliable contact/addressbook and solid reception. My first experience with an Ericsson phone left me cold. I like the color preview screen on the outside of the phone - particularly during meetings. I used to purchase a phone every year just to keep up - now I just want to upgrade to something that is going to last me a while so the more overall solidity, the better!

I took the new SIM card to a corporate store and asked them to transfer my phonebook from my old one to the new one.

Transferring the phone book is one thing, transferring the account information is another. ;(

I have already transferred my contacts with a data cable, but still need to activate the phone.

Hmmm... may be another reason for having bluetooth. I may be thinking too simplistically but would Cingular be able to download that information to your new sim? It used to be so easy to upgrade...probably why I've been putting it off!

Pizzle...seems like you're the only one to have any success with a data cable. Could you tell us what program you used and where you got it? Thanks!

I cheated a bit. ;-) Uploaded my contacts from my old phone/SIM using EasyGPRS, then stuck the new SIM in my old phone and downloaded the contacts to the new SIM. Then stuck the new SIM back in the new phone. Haven't tried it with pictures, graphics, or ringtones, but guessing it may work.

Like you guys, I can't find anything to enable the P207 on Easy GPRS. Nothing on the Web, nothing on Ebay, nothing on Samsung.com.

Posted by: JBX74205

d'oh false hope! lol

Posted by: blaze0ne

After two days of waiting for activation and 4 phone calls to cingular, my phone has just become active.
As many others have already stated, I'm having problems connecting the computer to the phone. I did buy the original samsung data cable, which is actually not USB but serial, and I downloaded their software, EasyStudio II.
I see everybody is trying to use EasyGPRS but on Samsungs website, it states that you need EasyStudio II. Here is a link where u can download the software: http://www.samsung.com/download/Mod...207&fileType=SW
My problem is that the software simply does not recognize the phone being attached. I put it on Com1 and have tried changing all possible settings with no luck.
If anybody has any solutions to this retarded dilema, retarded because so many people have this problem yet samsung does not want to address the issue properly, please post em!

Posted by: Roameo

I have the exact same problem as you blaze. It just sits there saying offline and I'm able to connect my S307 just fine so it's not a settings problem....it's just the P207. I think Roasted mentioned that Samsung said they really don't have a version of EasyStudio or EasyGPRS that will work for the P207 out yet. Now why then would they list EasyStudio II under "P207 Software" when it won't work with the phone is beyond me.

I hope a solution is found soon because I'm dying to be able to sync and customize this phone.

Posted by: JBX74205

Yeah me too. It's so strange that they'd release a phone without the proper software to back it up.

I know these little things are new, but has anyone had any problems with the phone yet? I've already had a couple...

Signal issues: I took my phone around the office and to my friend's house and I didn't get the same signal as I did with my SE T637. Actually, I didn't get signal in some places at all. I had never had a problem before, with the 637 or my motorola v400

Freezing: My phone spontaneously restarted yesterday two different times after locking up.

Keypad: While I was playing around with it, I noticed that the keypad gets warm if the lights are active for more than a minute or so.

If this is going to be the norm, along with no data transfer software and a really slippery outside which has already led to me dropping it (after the problems happened so it's not that) I might exchange it for a v551...I dunno yet though. Any thoughts?

Posted by: blaze0ne

I am angered because I bought the cable directly from Cingular. It is an official Samsung data cable that cost $23. When i make a purchase like this one I assume the product will operate as stated, will include the correct software and documentation, and if needed, the company will provide technical support.
None of these three "requirements" have been met.
Another question I ask is why spend the extra money (2-3x what aftermarket cables cost) buying OEM Samsung when it works just as ****** as garbage aftermarket cables?
I'm definitely pissed off that I can't get this cable to work and I know if I call up cingular or samsung, they'll just say return the cable and get a new one.
I would expect this problem from, for example, Innostream but not Samsung. Yet my innostream 90 always connected to my computers without a problem.
Samsung should stop putting out crap software and cables, and organize themselves reagarding this matter.

Posted by: Pizzle

Too many issues with this phone! Between the heating up, the hiss I hear, the cheapness of the phone...this junker is going up on eBay in the next 20 minutes. Sorry guys, I really tried.

So bummed, on paper this was a really cool phone. So what should I get next?

Posted by: MDDrew

this is the best samsung ive ever had

Posted by: JBX74205

Pizzle, looks like you've had some of the same issues that I've had. I'm starting to think that there's a reason why this phone sells for so little...you get what you pay for.

I think the hiss is the one thing that I can't stand the most. Roased said that it's known as "comfort noise" and that it's common in GSM phones, but I thought back to my GSM phones of the past and none of them had it. I've had a moto v400 and a SE T637 myself, and I've also used a moto v180, v220 and a nokia 6320...and I've never heard anything like this.

The case also feels cheap and the glossy finish is just aching to be scratched. I actually dropped it yesterday because it slipped out of my hand.

I'm not convinced that this phone is going to hold up over the long run, but the only other flip phone that Cingular offers that has the features that I want is the Moto v551, and I've heard some bad stories about that one. It looks like it's the lesser of 2 evils here...

Anyone have any ideas about what I should do? I'm gonna check out a v551 this weekend, but I won't be able to test the batteries...which are apparently the sore spot.

Posted by: straylight3

I had the V551 for a few months and really liked it, then it was stolen. Getting the p207 in the mail soon, so i can do comparisons

Couldn't have said it better myself. And yes, it's the hiss that bothers me the most. What sort of horror stories did you hear about the V551?

Ya, the V551 looks pretty nice. My first few phones were Motorola back in the day, then I went Samsung. Maybe it's time to go back to my roots lol.

What are your thoughts on the V551 and why didn't you get the same model this time around?

Posted by: MDDrew

i bought a wallpaper from cingular and it was 166 x 167 and it filled the screen but if i put a pic that size it doesnt.

the cingular pic was in .dm format tho

Posted by: JBX74205

There's nothing really terrible about the v551 except some battery stories. Apparently Cingular & Rogers got something like 30,000 defective units from Moto, which I hope have been taken care of. I had some issues with my old v400's battery, but nothing awful. The software problems that plagued the 400 don't seem to exist in the 551, which is good.

I'm thinking about trying the 551 myself because I don't know all of these people with batter complaints use their phones. If you have Bluetooth on all day and you're making 2 hrs of calls and texting, of course it's going to die quickly. Plus, if this one has problems that are documented by moto, the have to replace it with a working one.

I agree with Pizzle...this phone just didn't live up to the hype and DEFINITELY wasn't worth the trouble to get it. Looks like I'm heading back to Motoland. This was my first Samsung experience and I must say that I wasn't impressed. Maybe they should've stuck with their old formula. The phones all looked alike, but they seemed to work better.

The reason I didn't get it this time is I like the way the P207 looks, I don't really need the bluetooth feature. I really liked the V551 though. It was a very sturdy phone. 1 problem people had with it (I didn't) was that every time you pressed a key it would make a snap or pop sound. Really annoying if you get the problem, though it might just be with early units.

Posted by: saleen911

The phone is to cheap feeling to me. I got & getting rid off already. You cant fill the wallpaper as they post earlier & I dont like the fact you cant put anything in the fron LCD; Just the cingular jack which stinks. The phone will will be hot for a very short period . That just my my feelings on it, but those who do like no offence intenended

Posted by: nickcarr3151

if anyone wants to sell their P207... please PM me... thx.

Posted by: Saryio

Anyone know if the picture caller id shows up on the front lcd? I've tried to get it to show up at all and it hasn't worked I copied the entry to the phone memory and what not and still nothing.

Posted by: saleen911

That is one of the things that I really dont like about this phone. You really cant do anything with the front LCD except change the time display. I am not really half as trill about this phone as everyone else. It has a really cheap feel too. Light is good , but this just feels like it is too light & cheap feeling. To get the peach to work , you have to talk like rain man lol

Saryio, my picture caller id shows up on the front lcd so it is possible. Try deleting the entry entirely (from phone and sim) and then re-entering it to phone memory only, don't add it to a group and of course assign a pic to the caller id. Post again if it's still not working after that.

I have absolutely no problems with this phone, but I haven't used the data software so we can count that out.

This phone is built like a tank, because I've dropped the poor thing so many times already and surprisingly the hinge and everything else is intact as if I pulled it out of the box.

I at first thought it felt cheap, but I think that was mostly due to the fact that the glossy exterior squeaks when rubbed against one another (such as when the phone is open). If you take this phone and put it next to another Samsung such as the E317 or the X427, those phones have the standard shine-less silver exterior. The P207 has the black glossy shiny exterior. I knew right from the get-go that these 2 components when they make contact will make a squeak or two, which is why I first questioned it. Once you get over the fact that it has a glossy exterior and realize it's got the build of any other Samsung, you'll know you have a sturdy phone in your hands.

All in all, it's a **** nice phone. Sorry some of you are having trouble, but everyone else I've talked to have had 0 issues...

A replacement looks ideal for you folks.

Oh, how long are you on your phone before it heats up? I've been on for 45 minutes with no noticable warmness of the keypad...

Posted by: JBX74205

I've been getting terrible call quality on this one. I don't get service where i used to with my T637 or my v400, and the calls sound like they're coming from a tin can when I do connect. I've also got that annoying hiss in the background. Is this something that's common to Samsungs, or is it just my lucky unit?

Got it figured out, thanks for the tip I needed to put in the full area code in the phone number for it to recognize.

Posted by: Roameo

Glad you got it working.

Posted by: JBX74205

Well that's it for me.

After a week with this thing I've given up and ordered a v551 to replace it. I don't know if I just got a defective unit or what, but I can't stand the lousy call quality and the fact that there's no data transfer software out yet. The V551 is a little more expensive, but it has speakerphone and bluetooth, plus a MUCH wider range of handsfree devices thanks to the universal jack. Sorry Samsung, better luck next time.

Posted by: Saryio

That's unfortunate I actually get better reception at my home with the p207 then I did with my n625.

Posted by: Roasted

Sorry you couldn't of experienced a P207 that actually worked JBX... it actually is a very nice unit.

Have fun with your V551.

Just a question for P207 users - Open up your P207, on the left side of the hinge, grab the top part and lightly try to move it front to back... does it have any play?

I noticed my X426 had this, but given the fact I had dropped it on hard surfaces well over 2 dozen times I figured I just messed it up...

Is this just the way that Samsung builds their hinges? I guess I'll have to see tomorrow, when my other P207 comes... I did a warranty exchange for my original P207 and turns out my original P207 was fine, it's just I'm an idiot and wasn't doing something right.

Posted by: Roasted

jbx, you posted on phonescoop with your review of your bugged phone?

I just talked to someone who took apart like 6 Samsung phones (all different models) and said it's the way the hinge is built... I just wanted to make sure it wasn't out of the ordinary.

So at least we're all squared away here.

At least you had the balls to say nice things about it too. Last time I got a defective phone I went right to phonescoop and just laid on it saying how terrible it was.

Go me.

I guess I wasn't completely lying though, because about 40% of the reviews were saying it sucked with the same reasons I gave in my review, so I assume there was some MAJOR problems there...

I cannot access the internet through the P207 even though I'm paying for MediaNet. I do not have the GPRS icon on the phone and have tried changing the connection settings but still unable to connect. Anybody know what the problem could be? Thanks.

Posted by: chowxmien

GPRS might be down in your area. It was down for me a day ago.

Do the keys on the P207 light up at all because that is a nice feature to have at night

Posted by: saleen911

yes they do

Posted by: saleen911

The phone is a decent phone all in all, it really is. The selling price once the come available will only be about $200 to $256. so that is not bad. It has a lot of features that i did like. But it really isnt what everybody is hyping it to be. Samsung does make a good phone-but just like all of them everybody has features they like about every maker. Out of all the phones I have tried, which is about all of them. I think for all around uses the SE 710a has everything you could want from a phone, just my prefrence

I agree. People are going OMG YOU CAN TALK AND TYPE TEXT MESSAGES LYK WOW! Yeah, you can... but if you're quick at typing text messages by hand, you'll be faster at that than saying them.

The speech dictation thing (in my opinion) is MUCH more useful for calling people in your phonebook.

Example: You only have x amount of keys to set speeddial to. What if you have 70 contacts in your phonebook?

Hit 1 button so it goes into voice menu. Say "Call Amy." As long as it understands what you said (and the only time it didn't understand me was when I said "Call A...*sneeze*") It will connect right away. It has some snazzy voice command features too. Like checking battery life or signal strength. But more or less, it's a toy that can serve with a good purpose.

Regardless, it's a good Samsung phone. If you get this phone when you hate Samsung's, but want speech dictation, this probably isn't a smooth move. If you want a nice black flip phone made by Samsung, that happens to have an additional snazzy features no other phone has, then this is the phone for you.

I agree with that %100 , I think you nailed it

now if we could just figure out the whole Data Cable thing...

My girlfriend just got this phone and needs to copy all the numbers from the sim to the phone but says she can't find a copy all option you can only do them one at a time.

I'm at college or I'd try to help her, is there any way to copy all from sim to the phone?

The date on the main and sub screen is medium size but cannot be changed; you can change its color; the time is in big, easily visible numbers.
When you are sending a text message, you can change the text size (small, medium, large).
The menu text is large anough to easily be read but the size cannot be changed.

Maybe I'm overlooking something but is there a way to set it up where if I have a voicemail, missed call, or text message, that the service light repeatidly blinks instead of once every 5 seconds like normal?

I used to own an X426 and now ive got a moto v600. i love my moto but the thing is a brick, its so heavy and kind of clunky that its starting to bother me. i saw the p207 on cingular's site and i loved the look of the phone. i loved my x426, but i had a problem with the sound. the mic on the x426 was way too sensitive, if i had my radio on in the car people would complain that my radio was too loud, or that there was too much road noise.
so my question was: how is the reception compaired to the x426 or if someone has used a v600, and how is the mic quality. (if it is the same as the x426 i think i'd be going a different route)
the battery life im sure is excellent being that it is a samsung phone. my x426 was a solid phone and i loved it, i also love my v600, but i am a phone whore. :x

thanks for your info guys.

so my question was: how is the reception compaired to the x426 or if someone has used a v600, and how is the mic quality. (if it is the same as the x426 i think i'd be going a different route)
the battery life im sure is excellent being that it is a samsung phone. my x426 was a solid phone and i loved it, i also love my v600, but i am a phone whore. :x

thanks for your info guys.

When the X426 and X427 were first released, they had some bugs with them. The firmware 1.5 is the bugged version. Apparently Samsung and Cingular/ATT were doing returns for these phones. If you walked in, typed in the code, and showed 1.5, you could of gotten a warranty exchanged. The sensitive microphone and poor reception were the two big problems with this. Some had issues with battery life and such.

I don't know the security code, I think at the main menu you press #*9999* and it will say a bunch of stuff and at the end "Rev 1.5" or "Rev 1.6." The one that says 1.5 is the bugged one. If your phone says that, that's why you had poor results. Again, I'm PRETTY sure that that is the right code to check the firmware version... I may be wrong, perhaps doing a search may find it.

But, regardless, if you were happy with the X426, you'll be happy with the P207.

I too came from an X426, and I loved mine.

I really hope they release a firmware update. This phone has a lot of potential. The most annoying thing by far is the hiss while on a call which is not that bad. I don’t even notice it if I am in a half way decent conversation. Another thing is the front LCD could be a little more customizable. 2 options is just not enough.

I am sure they will release an update to Easy Studio II very soon that supports the p207. We just have to bombard them with emails and calls.

Has anybody else noticed the volume is kind of low while on a call? Maybe it is the hiss drowning it out but I think I need an 11.

This phone has a lot of potential.... what do you mean by that? I'm not seeing anything wrong with this phone...

Mine has no problems at all. I'm just a bit erked about the wallpaper thing, has anyone come up with a solution for that yet?

I guess what I mean is it could go from a good phone to a great phone with a few key upgrades.

I absolutely agree with you especially about the front lcd customization and the call volume.

Heck, if I could find WHERE to e-mail or call, i would... but the site is hard enough to navigate already.

Also, I don't know why some people are having low call volume and hiss. On my phone, I actually have to turn the call volume all the way down, or it blows me away. If I turn it up to half way, I can clearly hear the person with the phone 6-8" away from my ear.

I also don't get any sort of hiss, that I know of. I even listened in a really quiet room... nada!

anybody take any good pics of this phone? also what about mp3 ringtones. and how about the camera's pic and vid quality?

Posted by: saleen911

the pic & vid are about as good as se z500 nothing new. the phone is a nice lookin phone

Posted by: Roameo

And yes it does have mp3 ringtone capability. I have some working just fine on my P207 now.

Go to Menu --> Messaging --> Settings --> IM --> Default Community

From there you can select which service will be chosen when you go to IM the next time. Post again if you still have questions.

Nope, never worked so far. I don't know if its set up right on the phone, but I can't find anywhere here, or the Cingular site with the right settings to check. :-/

Does the email client on this thing support attachments? Like can you send your pics in an email? I haven't even configured it yet but i was just wondering?

another question for you guys, is did your book get crossed out in the pim sync?? and a sticker put there saying that it does not support it?? cuz mine says that??

I don't have a usb cord for it but i have unlimited data so i use the email client and email them to myself. I may look into getting a cable but i've heard there isn't any compatible software yet? I'm not sure.

I added the media net unlimited plan (24.99) just so i have no worries about going over. It has a built in email client, all you have to do is put in your settings i.e. I use yahoo and they already had yahoo's settings preset so i just entered my user id and password. On my computer i just go to yahoo mail and attach the picture or mp3 and email it to myself. Then i go to the phone and check email and retrieve the email with the song or pictures and save it to the phones memory. Might sound a bit complicated but it's easy and with EDGE speeds it's pretty fast too. I can email myself a ringtone as fast as i can bluetooth it in most cases.

Hmm, I have a problem with low volume too...I wonder how I can fix that..anyone got any ideas? This is the main problem for me and bad reception.

Note: I'm still under the 30 day trial, so should I get exchange for a new one (same phone of course...)?

Also, anyone that has the p207 and it works perfectly and you really like it, could you post your connection settings and any other useful information? this would really help.

go to www.samsung.com and seach for "P207", and you'll see a link to P207 software... looks like they just posted a driver and some software! the USB driver is v1.0 and the filename starts with "20050526" so perhaps they just posted it today. i can only assume the USB data cable Cingular sells will work with it...

Posted by: victimiza

I found that if you try to use custom wallpapers you can't fill up the whole screen like the default ones. Does anybody know what the specs are for the default wallpapers for the P207 (file format, size, etc.)? I'd love for my wallpaper to be without the white borders on the sides.
Thanks!

176x183.

Posted by: wcpprez

I am debating on which one to get. I notice some of you have had both phones at one time or another. I am leaning towards the P207, but that is mostly based on the appearance factor. I think the P207 is pretty awesome looking - but that isn't the only reason to buy a phone. So my questions to you are:

1. Which one has the louder ringer? (I can barely hear my current phone ring, and yes, it is turned up as loud as it can be.)

2. Do either of these phones have message reminders? Like beep every five minutes or so to remind you that you have either a voice mail or a text message?

Any other words of advice will be appreciated. I have to pay retail for whichever phone I buy, and there is at least $100 difference between the two.

Thanks In Advance.

Posted by: WirelessAndy

I think you and I are the only ones that care about the "nag" reminder alerts! But I'm glad I'm not alone anymore.

The V551 has nag alerts. Can be set to either beep or vibrate once, your choice (nice!) If I recall, Samsung has a mixed history on this feature. The x427m will blink the LED orange, but won't remind/beep you... UNLESS you have the flip open! It will then chime the SMS tone once every few min.

The P777, on the other hand, will blink the LED for the MOMENT the SMS chime is sounding off! Then it's back to regular blinks-ville. BUT, you can set it to nag-alert.

If I recall, I think someone mentioned the p207 does not have nag alerts, but does blink the front LED until you open it, read it, or something. can someone confirm this?

Posted by: wcpprez

I LOVE the nag alerts. The phone I have now doesn't nag me at all, and sometimes I go for hours before I realize I have a message of whatever type. I think I am going to go with the V551. The P207 is pretty to look at, but I can't justify spending so much more money on a phone.

I appreciate your response, and welcome others opinions too, as I have not purchased a new phone yet. And since I am a woman - I can change my mind with a moments notice. LOL

i don't know about the V551, but the ringer is definitely a weak point on the P207. it has no speakerphone or external speaker, so the earpiece ends up functioning as a very weak ringer. i guess there is a reason the stock ringtones are so obnoxious, anything that doesn't sound really strident is barely audible. i edited the midi's i downloaded to use the maximum allowed note volume (127) and it's still very, very weak... i'm going to have to figure out which midi instruments are stronger.

in short, the P207 ringer sucks. certainly any Nokia will blow it away. i don't have any experience with motorolas. for me the V551 is just too big and heavy to pocket - every other phone i have had was on the light/slim side, so i didn't want to "downgrade" there. if you carry your phone in a handbag this may not be as much of an issue.

on the plus side, there are other things i like about the P207. the size is good. the main LCD is about the best i have seen (the external however is terrible). the menus and java programs are much more responsive than other phones i have tried. the voice dictation actually works, tho it's not really any faster than T9.

points that are just average: sound quality is just ok, better than the T-mobile E315, not as good as a cheapo Cingular Nokia my mother has. battery life and reception are also so-so but acceptable. the keys are rather small and can be tiring to press a lot.

all in all, i'd rate the P207 a 6.5 out of 10. i'm generally satisfied i guess, but it definitely could be better. i wasn't expecting a whole lot more though, it's about what i thought it would be.

Posted by: LicorShot

truthfully i would go with the 551 unless u like to text message i would go with a nokia for that
but i tap on the 551 is annoying as hell whereas the samsung texting isn't too much of a pain to text on
loudness i definatly have to give it to the Motorola
a good plus for the moto is that there is a speakerphone
and bluetooth for the wireless needs
(which i thank god for cause i hated the wires)
bad thing is the Moto doesn't always get the BEST reception
as far as the 207 i don't know a ton of things about it
but for the money
the 551 is a great model to go with in my opinion
also u can get something close to the 551 maybe cheaper @ www.myworldphone.com

u need the 850 mhz this is crucial if your a cingular customer
otherwise u can get any phone off the website if your t mobile
or such

oh and im glad u liked the ringtone website i gave ya there Dorkus
that website was designed for motorola so its easy as hell to get those to work on that
took me some time on the P777 i had for it to work

Posted by: aznd000d

is it me or does the front LCD screen only stay on for a few seconds after you close the phone, then it goes blank.

Yes, the P207 has nag alerts. You can set it to alert you once, or periodically. However, as weak as the tones are, you will miss the reminders too!!!

I love the phone, but I HATE the ringers and message tones!!

Posted by: wcpprez

Thanks for all the input everyone. I am going with the 551, buying it from a sweet guy on here as a matter of fact.

Since not being able to hear my current phone ring is a major issue for me, and so many of you say the 207 isn't much better in that respect - it was a no brainer.

Thanks again. I will get out of this thread now before somone yells at me for getting off topic. LOL

I just got my p207 in the mail today. I have to turn the speaker volume all the way up to hear anybody. There is no way I would be able to hear the person talking if I was at a restaurant. I also have the hiss which gets louder with higher volume (duh). Also, the sound quality on my end is not as good as my old phone (Audiovox CDM-8900). People on the receiving end say the sound quality is great, though. I think I will try to get it replaced.

My other complaint is that the "silent mode" is not silent, rather "vibrate mode." You can still hear the sound of the phone vibrating, especially while taking an exam at school. Is there any way to quickly silence the phone, including turning off vibrating besides going through the menu?

I do, however, like the menus, many of options in the settings, and the external display isn't as bad as most people have described. I would prefer a monochrome external display, but this full color will do. I don't like the cingular background on the external display, though. I already bought the freakin' phone, so why is Cingular still trying to advertise to me? I hate advertisements and labels like that. Do the unlocked phones generally have the carrier labels all over the place?

I've got an update a few days later. The speaker is now pretty loud. I can usually hear people at the lowest or second lowest volume settings. I guess the battery just needed to be charged really well. The hiss is still there on volume settings above the lowest setting, though, but I can probably get used to that. I'm basically happy with it so far, considering it is a cell phone.

Posted by: Vexed99

Extract the photo from your phone and upload into Samsung PC Studio (Free from Samsung) and Resize. Upload back to phone. Pain, but it works

So you're just saying that you turned the phone off and let it charge for a long time and now the sound seems better?

I have not turned the phone off since I turned it on after the initial 8 hour charge. I put the phone on the charger every night when I go to bed while the phone is still turned on. The sound is now much louder than the first few calls that I made on it.

This is going to sound strange... and it may not apply to the P207.

On the x427m, I noticed that if you launch one of the built-in games, then exit out, all the ringers are now a few notches lower, even at the highest volume. I have to restart the phone to get the ringers to be as loud as they ought to be.

Just for grins, try launching a game and then see if your ringers behave any differently... You never know.

I did what you said and didn't notice any change in volume.

Posted by: option94

Does anyone have any info on battery life? I got my P207 last week and the battery lasts about 12 hours tops with out really using it that much.

Posted by: zadosha

Mine started off being real bad too, but it has gotten better. Now, I only have to charge it every 3-4 days. That's with moderate playing and calling. It's not as good as I'd like, but it's better than my v551! My biggest complaint is with the ringtone volume. It's horrible. I have to use the vibrate mode or I will miss calls. Vibrate will kill the battery quickly also.

Posted by: option94

I've been having to charge it in the middle of the day everyday. I followed the instructions for the initial 8 hour charge, and its just horrible. cingular is sending me a replacement. I just wanted to know if this was common, and something i was going to have to deal with. Otherwise I have no complaints.

Posted by: LicorShot

prolly is cause samsungs never did have great batteries
just dont overuse the car charger
plus i would buy a desktop charger unit and get a 2nd battery if u do that much talking

Posted by: option94

thats the thing. I only use about thirty minutes of talk time a day. And its still horrible. I used to have the x427 and it would last me two days before needing a re-charge.

Posted by: option94

bump.......

Posted by: zadosha

I would say that it's got to be a defective unit, or at least needs to be reflashed. I can get at least 2 hours of talk out of mine before it needs recharged.

Posted by: option94

i just recieved the replacement. Its on the charger now, and i'm going to leave in plugged in overnight. We'll see if that ones any better. If not, i'll just try and find a different phone from cingular arounf the same price.

Posted by: LicorShot

i would fork out a bit more and get the Nokia 6230
talk is great and customizing it is a breeze plus u can the MMC card out and get a bigger one or transfer things easier

Posted by: option94

yeah, but i absolutly hate nokia's.

Posted by: CraZy MeXic4n

can u give individual people ringtones? my lg l1400 u can only assign groups ringtones. and hows the memory on it? my lg can only hold about 5 ringtones, i know motorolas you can store a lot on them.

Posted by: LicorShot

i honestly am not totally sure but i am gonna go out on a limb here and say YES u can assign individual ringtones
plus groups and u don't have to store the contact to the phone u can learn i on the sim card unlike the motorola V series
really check out the phone
there is a 6230 and a 6230i
difference is the middle navigation button
Licor..........

Ok I have a few questions about this phone:

With the MP3 ringtones do they ring anything like the Motos? Alot of people I hear talking are talking about the .mid ringtones being low,but im really concerned with the mp3.

Also, with previous Samsungs you havent been able to change the message ringers is it possible to use custom ringers for these now?

Can you use images you recieved via MMS or something else as caller id? I know on my e317 I can only use photos I take as picture ID.

With the custom MP3 ringers can you use the ring and vibrate setting where the phone rings and vibrates at the same time instead of vibrating 3 times before it rings?

Posted by: shadtacular

BUMP! cmon i need answers!

Posted by: RotorMotor

Is there any way possible to turn off the Camera "Snap" sound, i have it in Vibrate mode and it still makes the noise.

Also anyone got any games specific to the P207 as Rogers does not list any yet for this phone, I think it's because the screen is a slightly off size.

There really is not much info yet on this phone. I want to be able to customize it like my Moto V551.

Hello,
I tried to do a search and couldn't find an answer, I was wondering if there was any code available right now to turn up the volume for the p207 phone, its never loud enough for me.
Thanks much

Posted by: LicorShot

first answer the ringers are loud but i believe they are ascending so they get loud at the end
2nd unless a 2nd program allows it there are no customizable msg ringers only what is stock with the phone
if i remember correctly caller id is a possibility
4th vibrate then ring thats how it works
never both at the same time

hope that helps

It plays MP3 ring tones , it has a video camera (quality isn’t that good), records audio, the design is perfect , light weight, slick , shinny black, Speech to text ( I personally love it, you have to personalize it, and push the button for every other word, You have to know how to use it & get used to it . Like I said earlier I personally love that feature). Cons: I cant get the data cabel to work ( I have tried everything) the front LCD doesn’t stay on. You have to press & hold the left button . you have to get the hands free ear piece form Samsung, it doesn’t have Bluetooth nor Infrared). I think that’s it.

I've searched this forum, I've searched EVERYWHERE!! What is the proper size of wallpaper on this friggin' phone??? I subscribed to a site to receive wallpaper, ringtones, etc., but the wallpaper will not fit (even though the P207 is in the drop down menu). Has anyone had any luck finding the proper resolution? 176 X 160 is listed on the site I'm subscribed to, but it's incorrect...I just end up with white on the top and bottom of the image. Help please, this is so frustrating!!

Is it true that you can't put games or ringtones on the phone with a datacable?

Posted by: Charisma32283

I just bought a samsung p207 with cingular less than 2 months ago and I'm having a few problems. Yesterday I was trying to access my calculator and the screen froze. I thought, okay that's weird, so I wait a few seconds and I hit end to see if it would take me back to the main screen. . . well after trying a few more keys the screen went blank. . . then it asked me to wait. . . finally it took me to the main menu. Okay Long story short it continued to freeze up on me for about an hour everytime I tried to access the menus but during that time I was still receiving calls. . . that's what's so strange! Then the last time it froze I took the battery out then put it back in . . . I hit the end button to start it up. . . the phone lights up with all the keys and the screen shows sgh-p207 www.samsungmobile.com I know this is usually the first screen that pops up so I wait. . . and I wait. . . the phone gets hot. . .and it's frozen . . . so now I can't get past this screen. .. it wont even take me to the main menu. . . What the hell can I do?

Games no, Ringtones yes.

Games can only be installed via a WAP site.

Take it to a Cingular store and see what they can do for you. More than likely they or you will need to send it to Samsung to be exchanged under warranty or for repair.

How are you uploading the ringtones to the phone? All I can do with the crappy Samsung software is access the pics and video from the file manager? How do I get ringtones on?

Posted by: Mango808

There should be Image to Phone and Melody to Phone options on the main page or under Tools.

What/which version of software are you using?

hey how everyone doing ?

my friend just bought a samung P207 from cingular and asked me to help with transfer pics and stuff from comp to phone. So i went and bought a USB data cable for her (which lable CLEARLY for samung D500 btw, and the seller said it will work, 200 item sold cant go wrong !!). After searchin this forum, tried to installed some drivers but the phone still wont detect the driver...

so i got pissed and email the seller and he sent me this guide to make it work.

http://www.mobilesandpdas.com/cables/

after follow the instruction from the guide, ALL the drivers are installed in perfectly, got the COM port on the USB to match with COM port on the PIMS (COM5), but the link to download the PC Studio PIMS for D500 still display the OFFLINE message on the status bar.

can anyone try this and tell me whats is going on ? is it my machine or it just wont work at all ???

thx

Actually I have 2 programs from samsung. One is the PC Studio II PIMS and File Manager (1.0.0.2) in which the melody to phone and image to phone menus are greyed out.

I also have a version of the EasyGPRS software (2.1.8) where when I select the melody to phone I can choose a ringtone (.mmf format), but after that I can't do anything. Where it says To Phone: the dropdown box only has [ADD] in it. So I'm assuming it doesn't understand that a P207 is connected to it. If anyone has a version of the tool with these features working for a P207 please point me in the right direction.

Posted by: Mango808

Just so you know, I don't have a P207 to work with the specifics, but the program works the same way for EasyGPRS with my other Samsungs and with the limited time that I've been using the Easy Studio II PIM & File Manager 1.0 with my E635, it's also the same.

In EasyGPRS, the Melody to Phone should work by Clicking on the Select button it should bring up a window for you to choose the folder where your ringtones are on your computer and lets you open it. Once it shows you the files, you just highlight it and click Open which brings you back to the Melody to Phone window. Now you should be able to click the Upload button or if you want to preview it, click the Play button just to the right.

Once you have some ringtones on the phone and you click the [Add] dropdown box, your downloaded ringtones shold be there. It lets you know which ones you have downloaded to your phone. Even the ones you download via WAP or get sent to your phone, shows up as well.

The same should apply to using the Image to phone.

As for Easy Studio, you should be able to use the File Manager to upload the ringtones and images to your phone and also download your pictures you take with the camera to your computer. In File Manager, there should be a phone Icon that has file folders that tell which folder it is, such as My Photos, Images, Sounds(Ringtones). There should be some Up and Down buttons which you can click on after yoyu select the file on the phone or on your computer.

I just got this P207 Samsung on eBay, and i put my cingular sim card in and it says 'sim lock Enter Password'

i read the manual and the P207 has a password protection for a specific sim card, and in order to use other sim cards, the password must be entered. the factor default is 00000000. Does anyone know how to recover or change the code if i can't get a hold of it?

Hi,

I just bought a brand new P207. I also purchased the USB cable available on Ebay. I downloaded the program that comes with it. After spending a lot of time to get it to work, I finally realised that it only lets me upload pictures and videos. In the file manager, ther is a file called photos and one called videos. There is no file called Sounds or ringtones.

Has anyone been able to put any sound on their phone using the USB cable and the PIMS file manager that comes with it?

Hi,
I have Samsung p207, and i have tried several times to install the software so i can upload my pic to the computer. I also bought the usb cable data on ebay, and the saler send the link that i can download and install the software, but i tried but can't. I don't know what did i do wrong, and seriously i don't understand the intrustion. I'm really bad at tech as u can tell, please help me since you're already installed your.

the link the saler provide is
www.mobilesandpdas.com/cables
and then follow the instruction for P207, but i really don't understand all the stuff. Can you show me how? Thank you so much if you can help me out.

Sincerely yours,

An Nguyen

Posted by: Mr.Firestorm

Well, it's pretty easy, first thing is to download the Drivers for the program. Install them, then download the PIMS file manager. Install it and plug in the phone. Chances are it won't work. You need to go in you Device Manager. Select Ports. Choose a Com for the usb cable that is not already taken. I'm not too sure between the Ports or Modems which one it is but you need to take the same com as the PIMS is configured. Go in the PIMS setup and select the same com, it should work properly.

Okay this is my first real cell phone, i'm liking it so far, a few quips but whatever, it makes calls.

One of the big selling features (for me..) was the voice thing mixed in with the calendar option since i can't afford to drop the money on a blackberry or PDA and i need to keep track of things.

Is there *ANY* way to get the voice recognition/input software to work with the calendar? It is very frustrating that i can send text messages (which i never use) with the voice software which picks up my voice wonderfully and i can call people with voice (which i would never really use... i have like 12 names tops...) but it pisses me off that it doesn't appear to be able to input text under the calendar which is the one place i want!

Is it possible? Mods? Anything?

Posted by: Logic_BomB

Also, do i pay for data transmissions by simply looking at games and tunes to download or is that considerred free since it's in a purchasing area??

If you are browsing on the phone, the answer is yes, you are still incurring data transfers (i.e. the images and other stuff are being downloaded to the phone for you to view them) even though you're not buying anything.

As for your other question regarding Voice recognition for the Calendar, the answer is no. It was not designed for that, only for texting and voice dialing.

I don't believe it's been asked before in this thread since i've gone through it all:

How the hell do i get multimedia caller id working? I have adress book entires with pictures and audio associated with them. For example, i have 3 entires under my girlfriend's group and i want them to show up with a different ring and a graphic so i know it's her. Everytime i've changed/re-changed and even restarted the phone nothing seems to work. I have caller ID as part of my package so i don't see how there could be a problem....

Just put the area code in with every phone number too. Then they will show up. For example, have every phone number down as 519-555-1234.

This is from another forum about which cable to use:

"the serial cable (with the female DB-9 connector on the PC-end) does NOT work, at least I wasn't able to figure out what driver and/or application it would require. (A lot of these cables are being sold on the Web, incl. eBay, claiming that they work with the P207; just stay away from them!) I am not sure what's the deal the USB cable with adapter box; I'm not even sure why the adapter box is necessary. The cable you need is the "straight" USB cable, with the Samsung connector on one end, the USB connector on the other, and only cable in-between. Being sick of duds received on-line, I just bought mine in Radio Shack (Mobile Phone Data Cable by FutureDial, Radio Shack catalog# 17-764, price $22.99); it lists the Samsung A310, A530, A600, N270, VGA1000 and VI660 as supported models, but works with the P207 without a glitch."

I went to radio shack and bought the futuredial cable and it works just fine. I seem to remember that the catalogue number wasn't exactly the same, but just look for the one with the model numbers listed and it should work fine.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme

The USB cable does work fine, mine was 8 bucks from Ebay and it works just fine. BUT, we're unable to transfer graphics and ringtones etc to the phone, thats all.

Posted by: video567

mine works i bought the radioshack usb cable model number 17-784 it was $22 bucks and i used the information from here : http://www.mobilesandpdas.com/cables/

it says :
SAMSUNG P207 & P735 USB DRIVER & SOFWARE:

Use the driver at the bottom of this page and the PIMS software.

http://support.samsung.de/modelsele...ype=SW&language

Connect the phone before starting.
This will create a device called WMC ACM 1.0 app, in your Windows Device Manager, in the Hardware section, under Ports but no drivers for it.
Download the USB Driver from the link above and run the setup.exe in 'Samsung Mobile USB Driver'
This will run a number of things. At then end, reboot and it will work.
Use the PIMS software from the same link you downloaded the software from immediately above, and install after driver is installed.
Now, go to the Device Manager, under Ports. If you are getting the ACM thing and a yellow exclamation mark, right click your mouse on it and update driver, point the search to the folder you
created on your computer with the above driver in it.
This should get your driver working.

only problem is that i had found a samsung PC studio 3 and had installed it and it recognizes m y phone but when i deleted the PC studio 3 i couldnt use the PIMS software to download or upload pictres so i had to rw installe the PC studio 3 even though i cant use it to get the previous version to work, granted they are not big programs so i dont mind taking the little space in my laptop, but atleast i was able to download all my little videos and pictures to my hard drive for safe keeping and save the money sending them through the phone. if anyone finds abetter way to do this please let me kknow. one thing is that i cant remember where i found the SAMSUNG PC studio 3 , i think it was in the uk samsung site

You're pretty much **** out of luck there. The battery is pretty horrible, and thats probably one of the only things i dont like about the phone (minus the data cable problems).

You could try turning off keypad tones (so it doesnt make a sound every button you press) and turning off the light on the outside of the unit.

Other than that, i dont think theres much else you can do.

Easy gprs doesnt work with the p207. The file manager does not display sounds. Only pics and videos. And you cannot select the melody to phone option in pc studio 2. Are you sure you can actually transfer ringtones?

how long does yours normally last? im not having any other problems just the battery not keeping a charge.

i dont use my phone that much, but i removed the sounds from the buttons and the outside service light and since i have it on all day for emergencies i recharge my phone about every other day, if i play a game though i have to charge my phone evry night. so mine last for a while i guess. i would suggest to take out the sounds fromthe keys when they are pressed and dissable the outside light and you may notice your phone lasting a bit longuer

i just purchased an OEM battery and I am gonna test that with the phone to see if maybe just my battery is bad...

That's exactly the frustration I experienced too. The "melody to phone" function is grayed out and out of use. The folders available in the file manager are only "Photo Album" (which only allows you to upload JPG files) and "Video Album" (mp4 and 3gp). No "Sound Album" whatsoever and cannot create one myself.
