i'm looking to get a data cable for vx8000. from what i've gathered there are 2 types of cables.
1) direct usb. plain wire
2) serial to usb. wire with box in middle.
the benefit of #1 is that the driver is easier to set up. the problem is that it doesn't charge the phone while in use.
#2 is good because it charges the phone, but bad because drivers are hard to set up.
can anyone confirm this info?
i'm leaning towards #2 because i plan on using the phone for internet, so charging while in use is important. anyone with wire #2 have any comments?

#1 Check to make sure that it does or doesn't charge. I checked with eforcity on ebay. He stated that his usb cables are data only. Some do charge, and make sure that they are described as doing so before charging.
#2 too slow, and driver setup is usually evil. Usb to Serial requires a driver that typically does not help (even when it works) because the slow speeds for serial communication vs. usb transfer speeds... well, there really isn't any comparison. If you're hearing ppl here state that their usb transfer speeds are slow when transferring a 2 or 4 meg file, serially isn't going to make you feel any better, trust me.
When looking for a USB cable, make sure that you're getting one for the 7000 phones (if it doesn't also list the 6100 and 8000). If it works for one, it works for all.
Check to make sure that it charges. Email and ask the sellers. This could save you some wasted money on crap schwag.
Personally, I like UL approved cables because regulatory certifications state that an item with UL cert will "Fail Safely". If a component burns up or fails horribly, there shouldn't be any burning plastic melting on your hand, or exploding, etc.
I just got my phone this week, and should be getting my cable next week. I'm examining some combo options, but USB to phone, UL cert, and fit for the 7k and 8k phones a must. I don't like shaving my face, let alone breaking out the dremmel for some plastic.

you've found a direct usb cable (no box within wire) that charges? if so, you have a link?

I bough the Data Cable from Verizon. A little more pricey but I knew it would work and wouldnt cause problems.
