SMT5600 as USB Modem?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: maiki

I have seen directions on how to use an MS smartphone as modem for laptop using Bluetooth? But what about using it as a modem when conncted via the USB cable?

I looked under "Phone and Modem Options" in Control Panel (Win XP Pro SP1) when the SMT5600 was connected via USB, to see if a modem was added for it, and it wasn't there. I clicked on the link to "Add a Modem", but didn't see any driver listed for using this phone as a modem.

Is there a driver one can download to use the SMT5600 (unlocked, in my case, using with T-Mobile USA), as a wireless modem for a laptop, connected via USB?

I desperately need help with this too. If anyone knows, please step up and answer .

Setting up the Audiovox 5600 as a modem via cable

Using Modem Link you can use your phone as an external modem for another device (e.g. PDA or computer). Modem Link allows you to use a USB connection.

Step 1: To set up a USB modem connection

1. Make sure that your phone is not connected to another computer or device (e.g. PDA).

2. On the Home Screen, select Programs, select More, select More again, select Accessories, and then press Action.

3. Select Modem Link and press Action.

4. Under Connection, select USB by pressing the right or left directional keypad outside of the Action button.

5. Press Menu, select Activate and then press Action.

Note: Do NOT press Done on the left soft menu key. Pressing Done will deactivate the current connection.

Step 2: Obtaining the Audiovox 5600 Wireless USB Modem Driver for your computer

1. Connect your Audiovox 5600to the computer via the USB cable.

2. Upon connecting the Audiovox 5600 to your computer, the computer will prompt you for Audiovox 5600 Wireless USB Modem driver with a 'New Hardware Wizard'. See Step 3 below for further instructions.

Please note that if an ActiveSync session initiates during this process you should shut down the ActiveSync session and verify that your Modem Link session is still active (as described in Step 1 above).

3. You can download the USB driver from the following Audiovox website (www.audiovox.com).

After installing the modem, disconnect your handset from the computer, re-activate the USB modem in your handset and reconnect it to the computer.

"Smartphone 2002 Wireless USB Modem" or similar should now be properly listed in the Device Manager window.

Step 4: To Query the Modem

A modem query is necessary to establish a PC and modem connection. Note: If the PC and modem connection is not established in approximately 30 seconds, ActiveSync will take over the USB port.

1. Click on Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manger > Modems

2. Double click on "Smartphone 2002 Wireless USB Modem".

3. Select the "Diagnostics" tab and click on "Query Modem".

The PC sends AT commands and if the modem replies back without an error then the modem is properly installed.

Step 5: To Add an Initialization String

Add an extra initialization string to Modem Properties. Change the APN as needed. An extra initialization string is needed on your 5600 phone for setting up the GPRS server configuration. Please contact your wireless service provider for the APN name, username and password.

1. After querying the modem (from Step 4 above), click the "Advanced" tab in the Modem Properties dialog box.

2. Type in your initialization string and change the APN name as needed.

3. For T-Mobile initialization string please use the following: at+cgdcont=1,"IP","internet2.voicestream.com"

Step 6: To Use 5600 Wireless USB Modem for Cable GPRS

1. Activate USB modem on handset (unless already active). Connect USB data cable to handset and PC (unless already connected).

2. Establish PC and modem connection (modem query or hyper terminal AT commands)

3. Add dial-up connection using wireless USB modem

To Add new connection Dial-up Connections :

1. From Control Panel select Network and Dial-up Connection

2. Double click Make New Connection then Next

3. Select Dial-up to Internet then Next t radio button

4. From Internet Connection Wizard select radio button Internet Connection Manually then Next

5. Select radio button connect through phone line and modem

6. From modem selection, scroll down to Smartphone 2002 Wireless USB Modem then Next

7. Under Telephone Number space type *99# and uncheck area codes and dialing rules then Next

8. Fill in user name and password as needed

9. Type connection name (ie Smartphone USB Cable GPRS) and next

10. Select No then Next

11. Unselect the "To connect to the internet immediately" option.

12. Click Finish

Ensure Smartphone 2002 USB Wireless Modem is selected and hardware features are properly configured before dialing:

To double check settings:

1. Open the newly created dial-up connection

2. Click on Properties, verify Smartphone 2002 USB Wireless Modem is selected

3. Click Configure and ensure all Hardware Feature is selected as shown below. Make sure that the maximum speed is set for 115,200 bps.

4. Click Ok then Ok

5. Click Dial.

6. After clicking Dial you should see Opening – Dialing – Verifying User Name and Password --- Registering your computer on the Network.

Once Dial up Dialog window shrinks down to your icon tray then you are GPRS connected –

Congratulations!

Step 7: Shutting Down the Modem Connection

When you wish to shut down the modem connection you will need to do the

following:

1. While in Modem Link menu item, press Menu, select Deactivate and then press Action.

Oh dear lord thank you. I've been trying to get this to work for months, and I finally got it!!! For the past week, I've been searching for the needed driver. I found the right driver for the smt5600 as "HTC USB MODEM" here

http://www.bugir.com/jon/gprs.html

you should right click the link, and save as to your location of choice. Then, just run windows installer, and look for the driver under where you saved the driver file. I thought I'd never get it to work.

also, here is a perfect faq http://www.ppcw.net/index.php?itemid=1369&catid=4

I have cingular, and used the following initialization string

AT+cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.cingular","",0,0
username- WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
password- CINGULAR1

And there you go! Everything you need to make a modem connection with your phone, and with a pretty **** good connection speed. But, it's still not dsl speed. Is there any way to change the settings and make it faster? Also, could someone please sticky this iether here or in the smartphone forum? I know there must be others out there who spent a great deal of time trying to find theese resources. Put it as "smartphone modem howto". Thanks.

The link for the driver isn't working..... it's a dead page.... any other driver pages out there?

Thanks

Unfortunately the 5600 does not support EDGE only GRPS. So 56K dial up speeds are normal. It is a shame this product doesn't support EDGE.

Posted by: ascalon

Ugh. Every darn link to the driver seems to go dead, no matter where it is. A google search for "htc modem driver should help". Try here
http://list.driverguide.com/list/company2083/

I have a copy of the driver, both on my phone and comp, so I can email it so someone, and they can put it on a website or something. Oh, and did I mention the phone modem kicks dial-up-speed ***?

Posted by: Coke

Here is the driver and the manuals that shipped with my SMT5600

Thank you ascalon, for emailing me your drivers. I confirmed that they are one in the same.

Enjoy!

what kind of connection speeds are you getting with the smt5600 as a modem? i know this phone doesn't support edge but i've read somewhere that since it's gprs class 10, it actually gets comparable speeds. i have a moto v551 and i've gotten speeds up to 115 kbps connected to my pocket pc with cingular using dslreports.com/mspeed. can some of you post some speed results?

Posted by: ascalon

I dont know. When I'm connected, it says the speed is 230.4 kbs. All I know is that it's pretty darn fast, and levels above dialup if you ask me. But, it's still not comparable to dsl. Does using the phone as a modem charge you by the data usage, or phone minutes? I have unlimited data, and 1250 minutes a month (with some thousand rollover right now), so I'm strait either way, but I hope it's the data.

did you actually run a speedtest or is that what your computer says your connection speed is, cuz i believe there's a huge difference.

Posted by: zenmeta4

When you use the SMT5600 as a USB modem, does it count against your data plan or your minutes? I only have a 4mb plan, so I want to make sure I know what addition charges I may rack up. Thanks in Advance!

Posted by: ascalon

It seems to be coming off my data, or it should. I have unlimited data and 1,250 minutes, with 6000 rollover right now so... I cant really tell.

Is there any final answer on this? Will I be charged minutes or data on Cingular?

Quick question:

I have the 4.99 tzones, and my settings work so that I can browse any website with my phone. Following the instructions in this thread, I can also tether my laptop to my smt5600 using the usb cable, and it shows that I am connected (with something like 220kbps). However, I am unable to access any website from my laptop despite my being 'connected' to the GPRS network. Is there any way I can get this setup to work?

Posted by: ascalon

If it actualy says the internet connection is connected and working, try going into internet explorer, look under tools>internet options>connections and make sure the settings are correct. If that doesn't work, make sure you restart your computer. That solves a lot of issues. In fact, do that first, then the other stuff.

Posted by: Janhaus

Nm, I figured it out. After browsing just about all of the threads on the subject, I learned that I needed to set the proxy settings for internet explorer on my laptop as well...so now it works. However, the speed is horrible, so I guess the 4.99 tzones really doesn't give you much in terms of browsing experience. Perhaps I will switch to the 19.99 to see if there is a speed improvement.

I have the $19.99 T-Mo plan and have been able to make a connection with the modem, but no websites in IE will load. I've tried using a proxy in IE (exact same proxy as what's in my 5600) but that didn't work either.

Anyone have any ideas?

Sorry to drag up this old post... but I ran into an issue following the configuration - I followed the instruction posted earlier to this thread... everything appears to work ok... I got the
Opening - Dialing - Verifying Username and Password, Registering your computer to the network - BAM! Error msg box: Error 734: PPP Link control protocol was terminated.

I checked to make sure it's on unsecure password... tried again, same thing.

Any idea?? I'm on T-Mo with the 4.99 plan and I can surf HTTP sites without issue on the phone.

Thanks,
Cris

Posted by: georgi55

Search around the forum, If memory serves me right T-mo disabled this.

Posted by: phonetech1983

error 734 means you typed the init string incorrectly, or you need to use a different number for the init.

first of all, if it's not at+cgdcont=1,"IP","internet2.voicestream.com"
then try that exact one.

Second, if that doesn't work... change it to at+cgdcont=3,"IP","internet2.voicestream.com" and have the Phone number to dial changed to *99***3#

That should work.
