Hi, I don't mean to preempt anyone, but i had to spend over an hour reading irrelevant minutia, looking for instructions that actually worked, so I'm posting these here. If there are better/newer instructions, someone please post them here... I think if we can have a SHORT, succinct, correct set of instructions, without a lot of off-topic posts, it would definitely be worth a sticky.

This must be done with battery and sim OUT. you may not have to, but I had to press the left button in while I connected the usb cable, to get the computer to recognize the phone.

It's possible to fool the Motorola System Updater into thinking that your phone is an older Cingular branded phone and will update your phone to the latest firmware branded to Cingular.

How to update

You need the following two files:

The updater tool Motorola MPX220 System Update v1.0.0.28

The Cingular pre-1.030 systeminfo.xml file

Install and run the updater tool, follow the onscreen prompts until it says it has retrieved the information from your phone and is about to check on the internet to see if you need an update.

At this point, leave the updater where it is and go to Start, Run, type in %temp% and click OK. In your temp folder you should find an MPX 220 System Update Wizard folder. In here there should be a systeminfo.xml file. Overwrite this with the one attached above, go back to the updater and click next to continue.

The updater will send this xml file to Motorola and will find out that there is an update available as it thinks your phone is a Cingular model with older firmware than 1.030. It will then proceed to update your phone (this may take some time).

Do I need to update?

Now that's a good question.

1. If your phone is locked to a particular network and you're updating in the hope of unlocking it, don't bother. Firmware updates don't unlock phones, nor do they relock phones already unlocked.

2. A lot people refer to this Cingular ROM as version 1.30. It's not! It's 1.030, released mid Nov 2004. There's a 1.040 released 4 days before this Cingular one, but it's unbranded. There's also been a 1.150 unbranded, released in Dec 2004.

If you have 1.150 in your about info (Start, Settings, About) as the manufacturer version, don't bother with this update. If it shows 1.30 and you're on Cingular, again don't bother. If you have anything with 0.xxx then it's probably worth updating.

3. This ROM update may give you vastly improved camera and earpiece volume, but only if you're updating from a particularly old or pre-prod version of firmware. It certainly won't give you voice dialling over bluetooth, it seems the phone simply can't do that, something to do with the bluetooth implementation in MS WM SP edition.

Hope this helps,

Freakstone

short:

download updater and rom.
unzip rom.
install updater.
open updater.
make sure your battery/sim card are out.
make sure phones not plugged in.
select mpx220.
click browse.
navigate to where rom is unzipped.
select mlf file.
plug phone in when it tells ya.
watch.
clap when finished.

ps - no need for all the xml stuff. this updater doesnt deal with that.

I tried using the Mobile Upgrade wizard v1.8.3, and had it detected my phone, but when I went to pick the file to upload, it wouldn't accept the files... It's looking for a single ".img" file. When I unzip the ROM, all I get is a bunch of files. I've noticed that many other people have had this problem, so does anyone have a solution, or something? What are we doing wrong?

img? should be mlf? what the heck?

Posted by: Omega2008

it can be either or. It depends on the uploader you are using. When I had the MPx 200 and I upgraded to the WM2003 ROM it was a .img file not a .mlf file.

Posted by: lewinb

Yeah, that's one of those subtle details that all of the instructions leave out... grrrrr.

I had assumed that it was supposed to be an img, since that's what it was for the mpx200. What the heck do I do with an mlf? The wizard won't recognize it as anything! Is it supposed to be a single file? Why is it showing up as a folder full of files?

i never included that because i knew nothing about it. the updater that you download from my site should work - ive never heard of anyone not getting it to work b/c of this reason. when you start it, it should let you browse to the files.

you might need to turn on show hidden/system files if you cant see em in the updater. but that doesnt sound like your prob!

are you using the updater from my site? and youre choosing mpx220?

I was using the same one the I used with the mpx200, because it has the same name and version number as the one from your site... I'm going to download it and see if it's any different.

Just so that it doesn't leave anybody hanging, I finally got access to a PC, used the installer from laskuh, and it worked.
I used the MDS-4-1250-1001-000.mlf file...

I started to get worried when it took forever to start up again afterward, but it finally did. It seems to be working properly...

One thing that seemed confusing to me is that it wouldn't work unless I plugged the phone in way before it says to... in fact, at the screen that says not to plug it in yet.

hooray. although... thats odd. ive heard different things from different people (about it taking super-long and all) but ive never heard about anyone saying they needed to plug in way before.

odd!
