i just went to the smartone site, and it seems that vodafone and smartone have merged, does this mean that we can not escape the dreaded vodafone menu system, in any further sharp releases?

Yeah I noticed that smartone and vodafone have merged or something. hopefully the dreaded 'blood red' menus dont escape vodafone to smartone..i love the menus of the smartone's 902.

After reading carefully (in Chinese) they did not merge, more like a joined venture like Rogers AT&T back then all they are changing is the logo and I doubt Voda will ever change their menu, maybe in 2030 :rolleyes2

In HK no service provider will ever locked their handset, but as for the Sharp SX813 they ony do it if you are on any contract term or pay $500 HKD to have it unlocked from them but buying the phone outright will not be locked.

yeah from what i read too it seems more of a partnership than a merger.
After the SX813/V902SH i hate both of them!!! Voda for locking their phones and both voda/smartone for locking mp3 ringtones!!!

You guys don't seem to be very familiar with the way Vodafone works...

When Vodafone start an agreement with a phone operator and go as far as rebranding to have their name in the brand name, you can be assured that Vodafone eventually plan to take control of the company and rebrand completely under their name. SmarTone-Vodafone are only in a transitional phase, and I'm 99% sure that within a year or two, they will become Vodafone HK or something.

Just look at Japan, Vodafone started with J-Phone in 2002, rebranding their business to J-Phone Vodafone. One year later, the company completely changed over to Vodafone KK, and became Vodafone in Japan, with no trace of the former J-Phone.

Vodafone Group have always preferred to own their subsidiaries 100% wherever possible, so I wouldn't be surprised if in that time SmarTone will vanish from the market and you'll only hear about Vodafone HK after that.

What I can almost guarantee you about is that handsets customised for SmarTone will cease and they will just adopt the Vodafone live! set of handsets. It will be much cheaper for them to do so while giving them the same benefits as they had before.

So if you want an unbranded Sharp handset, now may be your last chance to get one...

if thats the case these new panasonic range with 16M colours is not looking that bad anymore,(competition for sharps CGS????)

Looks like the SX813 will be my last sharp. is the gx t300 a smartone phone or some other provider in taiwan. If its a taiwan provider do u think we still have got a glimpse of hope?
