First I want to thank the awesome posts here that helped me get a real ringtone on my vx6100!

HOWEVER, there's a bit a lot of them leave out. I had an almost impossible time, probably due to OS, mp3 editor, and email program. It was also frustrating that a lot of the very helpful directions don't say what happens *after* you email the ringtone to your #@vzwpix.com account (and since mine didn't work for several days, I had no clue of what was going on).

I tried a bunch of apps and two different emailers on my MacOSX machine, but nothing worked. I don't know why. I edited the file down to a good size on my Win98 machine and used my university's webmail. Didn't work.

Finally, I came into the office, used the WinXP machine and Sony's soundforge 8.0 demo, and used my gmail account. That worked. I have NO IDEA why, only technical guesses that aren't worth detailing here (and many of which could be wrong).

Clearly, mp3 editor and email service and program matter, and the OS you use may matter as well. This was killing me since in theory it shouldn't matter at all.

When your phone receives a workable file, it won't say "failed to play", it will actually play the song! You can then save it. Then, from the main menu, go to "Media" (#7). In "Sounds" you should see the title of your mp3 that you gave it when you saved it. You can then set it to the ringtones.

I am so, so happy now, since the normal ringtones are terrible, and the for sale ones were clearly made by people that hate music and want everyone in the world to hate music. Some great songs by my favorite bands.... Destroyed... Boooo!!!!
