i605 and Bluetooth

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have had my i605 for about a week now. Here are a few questions along with a plea for help.

First impression: Yeh, it has all the charm of a brick. Not as ugly as the 860 and other new phones but not as nice as the 730 (I happen to believe the i730 was the pinnacle of iden phones for looks. If it had bluetooth I would stil lbe using it). Like a brick though it is sturdy and very functional in it's form. The MIL spec environmental is probably a Good Thing.

Bottom line, it isn't a slick metal flip. I'm done with that topic.

Now to functionality. The large screen is definitely nice. WAP browsing and messages are much nicer. So much better I boggle that I put up with peeping through the keyhole of a display on the i730 and i1000 before that. And hmm, multimedia messaging. I wonder what that does? So I email some smallish images to my phone. Nice! Let's see what I can do with them. I can save them. I can use them for caller ID icons. Sweet.

How about wallpaper? Nope. Won't let me. Rat bastards still cripple the phones to sell downloads.

Ok, now the Big Deal: Bluetooth. I did a fair amount of fiddling but little RTFMing. A bit more googling. Here's what I found so far.

Headset Profile: Jabra bt200. Bingo! Easy paring, complete success including voice dialing.

Handsfree Profile: 2004 Toyota Prius: Mixed results so far. It pairs up easy and auto reconnects when I get in the car. I can use the Prius screen to dial out and it mostly works fine. Decent quality at both ends except for once where it was an echo-y robot voice at both ends. I haven't been able to recieve a call yet although I haven't tried much yet. One time it tried but didn't seem to work although the recieved call display on the prius registered the caller id.

Direct connect is also still a question mark. The first time I got a DC it seemed like with the bt connected it wanted to use that instead of the speaker but the Prius doesn't understand DC. Today it seems like the 605 disconnected from the Prius and worked as usual for DC.

I can upload stored numbers and names one at a time from the 605 to the Prius phone book. I don't see any way to upload more than one. I also haven't been able to dial from the 605 while still using the handsfree connection. Obviously still more experimentation is required.

Palm tungsten|t:
They can discover each other but they aren't on speaking terms apparently. From what I can tell there's a bunch of drivers and things to get it to work right and of course there is no driver file for Nextel. Most of the drivers seem to be for data or network profiles anyway. Or maybe SMS.

QUESTION 1: What do I need to dial from the Palm? How can I SMS? How can I transfer images and ringers?

PC with Bluetooth:

In this case I have a Toshiba tablet PC with built-in bluetooth. Like the palm I can discover and pair with each other but damned if I can get it to do anything useful.

QUESTION 2: like Q1 above, what can I do with a bluetooth PC in terms of ringers images or phonebook data?

What version of software do you have on the phone (#, *, Menu, right arrow)?

It works in voice mode only on my bmw, it will not pair as a full handsfree profile device, just headset. It worked for a few minutes one day and then it stopped.

DC works fine through the speakers though but you have to hit the DC button on the phone.

I am getting a bluetake bluetooth adapter for the PC. I will let you know of any progress on the PC front...

Are you using the car to find the phone or vice versa? BMW's definition of a hands free device and Motorola's may be different.

Hmm, unless I am doing something wrong I couldn't find out. I would hope there aren't old or new versions of software out there yet. It is brand new...

Today I recieved DC connection and it worked. The Prius switched to phone mode by itself and I could hit the PTT to talk.

I was also able to dial from the handset and have it switch on by itself but another time this didn't work. Annoying.

YoDude, Motorola makes 4 or 5 different phones for different carriers that work with BMW flawlessley. There is a new version of the Moto software being tested internally that supposedly clears the BMW BT issues. I dont know what these issues are in terms of the actual protocol being used, but you would think that Motorola would not be reinventing the wheel for every phone they make, who knows..

To check the software version, hit #, *, Menu key and Right arrow in rapid succession. It may take you a few times. Then go into Phone Info and then software. Your version should be R2F.00.00. R2F.00.01 is out in some beta phones.

There is only one OFFICIAL version. A new version is being tested internally and it has been leaked out but I cannot locate it. The person that had it, also had a beta i850 with BT.

I was able to take 1 call and receive one call from the car without using the phone. Any other time, it has worked as a headset device only... Very annoying...
