tried the P800... sweet!

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to post that I tried a working model of the SE P800, and I must say, good god it's damned sweet! I didn't realize the formfactor was so small... I thought it was a little bigger in pictures, but holding it in my hands was an entirely new relevation!

For those who are holding out to get the P800, please post some questions you would like answered regarding the unit, as I am going back to WC3 Trade Show in Toronto tomorrow morning and throughout the day. I'm exhibiting my company there, and got lots of free time to kill.

One of the pro's I've seen is the screen. It's CRISP. The white is truly amazing, and the letters are sharp. The functionality of the phone OS seems a little slow, but then again, this was a prototype model, and nothing is finished 'til they actually slate it for production. One of the Con's was the touch-screen. I believe the screen was not digitized, and so, the stylus would be a bit off of where I would want to point and touch... but again, prototype model, and I'm not too worried about that.

As for writing in the unit, I'm going to try it once again tomorrow.

LOL!!!

I'm not sure how much I'm digging the look of the flip keypad. Makes it look somewhat cheap... gotta check it out.

You can detach the keypad if you want ......It will still works for all the functions..........

EC3 sorry... not WC3.. haha!

Exco Comm Canada Communications Trade show, for the GTA folks is located at the Metro Convention Centre downtown toronto, on Front Street, right to the East of the CN Tower.

As for actual working devices, I didn't get to meet a rep who had a real working (as per phone usage) one. I'll go and see if I can find a rep who can actually use the phone function.

The camera function is so much fun. It's such an ease-of-use application. I'm very impressed with how SE implemented it.

As for the mp3, I'll have to try that out. The UI is very simplistic and again, this reminds me of a Palm OS device. Also, there is a 5-way jogdial!

You can either rotate it up or down, move it perpendicular to the plane (i.e. when holding in your left hand, you can use your thumb to move it towards you, or away from you), and of course, the proverbial push in towards the device for selection. The 5way is A VERY usefull feature, as this is basically what'll get you through most of the apps.

You can check out pics that Howard posted, .. as I will be mostly commenting through a text version.

It's 10am, and I'm gonna head over there now. brb in a bit!

The latest version of the software corrects many of the issues mentioned. Not sure if the unit in Canada has the newest software. The precision of the stylus is improved, the speed of the OS is faster. The polyphonic ring tones are the loudest I have ever heard. The phone will take a big bunch of pictures with the memory stick attached. The flip is removable as mentioned but IMO you would want to leave it on as somewhat of a screen protector. The video playback is amazing. It is as good as an DVD player, just smaller. No estimate yet on retail, launch in US will not be until late Q1 '03. Officially no carriers have accepted the handset. SE is not pushing it until after the holiday rush. As much as they everyone would like to have it ready by then, it simply makes smart business sense to have a product that is 100% no bugs. Sorry to say everyone will have to wait a few more months to get one in the US.

The handset is much smaller that you might think if you have not seen it in person. I'm not saying it is tiny, but it fits very comfortably in your hand, and is amazingly light. Much lighter and easier to carry than my iPAQ.

My favorite feature of the handset is that when you take a picture there is a simulated shutter sound to indicate the pic has been taken. Really cool.

Late Q1 03??????? OMFG where did you get that informatiom from? Are u sure? That is truly ridlicous. I can't believe them.

Late Q1 '03 sounds right. European markets aren't expecting the P800 until after Christmas in early Q1 '03, so we North American's probably won't be seeing too much of it until after that point (though you could import one at a premium I'm sure).

Perfect for me though... Let me save some money up for that bad boy, and find something to do with this silly T68i... I guess I can kiss all of my Palms good-bye! WOOHOO!

FINALLY a Mac user speaks out. My Bluetooth adapter should arrive today so I'll be able to get my T68i to talk to my Mac using iSync (and to my PC as well, just have to move the Bluetooth dongle over). Hopefully it all goes well, but my Palm syncs into Entourage, so it's kind of annoying flipping back and forth between Entourage and Address Book and iCal (which is a nice app, but doesn't sync well to the Palm. The final release had better be able to mask categories from syncing).

Do you sync any of your current phones?

Thanks for the mini review and the release info.

Yah it makes sense for them to wait until its 100% ready. Too many companies are always rushing to get it out for the holiday season.

I wish it was coming out sooner, my pocket PC is acting up I think the battery is shot. Dont want to buy another one yet though... if the P800 can take its place.
