CDM-8940 Questions

A friend of mine just bought one of these phones and has a couple of questions. First off, the bottom two rows of the keypad aren't lit up worth anything (7, 8, 9, *, 0, and # keys), and second, he says there's a ticking sound all the time while talking on it, like you're hearing a clock. Has anyone else noticed these problems? Thanks in advance!

all my numbers light up and there has been no clicking noice. guess the friend just got a bad phone... sounds like an easy return/exchange.

The ticking sound is common on this phone. I exchanged once, and the new phone had the same ticking. Check out phonescoop.com forums and enter keywords "CDM-8940 Ticking". Many people have experienced the same problem. Audiovox and Verizon claim to be unaware of a problem. For me, the ticking is very soft, and occurs 6 out 10 calls. I personally think it's a hardware problem. Hopefully there will be a fix soon! Other than the ticking(most people can get used to very light ticking), the phone is almost perfect!

i haven't noticed any ticking and the lights show up fine, i can see all the keys. awesome phone!

yo mine hasnt made any ticking noises yet

my bottom buttons are a liiiiiiiitle less bright but there still visable in dark places

the only thing i dont like about this phone is the speakerphone isnt as loud as i like it in some places and it has no bluetooth

anyway, yeah I guess I got lemon cdm8940. ticking noise is random, but very annoying when audible. The light on keypad is really worth nothing. 5 lights up the most and 4 and 6 lights up, but I can barely tell 1,2,&3s are on and 7,8,9,*, 0, &# are joke.

Since return looks like my next step, I am thinking about maybe getting some other phone and not replacing it with another cdm8940.

please convience me to replace it with cdm8940. I need to know:

1. how do I download mp3 to my phone? just buy a $20 cable? or do I need some software to do so?
2. is there a way to transfer pic and vid to and from miniSD? I hear some has done it, and others think that's not possible.
3. is it really that difficult to take a self portrait?
4. my ringer volume is next to nothing with volume level at 5... is mp3's volume the same way?

thanks in advance

i got one yesterday. Problems ive noticed are speakerphone volume and keypad volume suck, even at level 5. When i try to take a self portrait, the screen flickers b/w the camera and the background picture constantly. At one point for about 5 minutes, i had no volume at all. I tried to make a call and could hear nothing. Then it just stopped doing it and had volume again. Weird stuff.

I haven't even played with miniSD card and I am already getting sick of this phone.

Below are some of the problems I already faced.

1. Battery and charging time sux. It takes too long for too little of juice. Is there a way to charge this phone without BOTH display on? WTF is the inside display on when phone is closed?

2. Volume key on the side of phone is placed in a bad place.

3. It makes noise by itself. For some reason, this phone makes tiny chime noise little after 2:30am! It also make this same noise every time I go in and out of EV mode.... so annoying.

4. It makes ticking noise, but I guess that might not be for all CDM8940s. But I also hear beepping noises when I'm talking like it would with my old phone when I get a call when I'm talking. So I thought someone was calling, but display is black! I don't know if someone is calling and I need to answer or if it's going in and out of EV mode... again, really annoying.

5. Most importantly, when it looses signal, it goes into "extended network" and it won't let it go! Do I have to keep getting my phone out of my pocket to see if it's in Verizon Network? It's a joke right?

As you can see above problems are all related to cell phone's main purpose: talking on it!

Am I the only one who faced these problems? or am I doing something wrong?

I will play around with it for couple more days, but what I really looking for is your advice. Please resolve above problems and/or share the reason why you kept this phone.

thanks in advance.

1. i agree, totally sucks and it is really stupid, havn't messed around too much to tryt o figure it out, probably not possible

2. havn't noticed

3. check your alarms. when i got mine there were on by default. i'm pretty sure there is an option for the noise going in and out of EV area.

4. I've heard the ticking once, was talking to someone with cingular. sounds annoying, you go in and out of EV a lot huh?

5. that is weird and i have not experienced it.

it's like this phone is a bit of a trial run. the got vcast on it but didn't concentrate on a lot of the other little details (the charging thing really pisses me off) i used to have the kyocera slider and it would charge up completly in like 15 or 20 minutes and then last for 3 or 4 days. it was totally nuts. 8940 lasts like 2 days if i don't use it much. of all the little flaws the phone has the chargin/battery is the worst.
all that said i love the phone. vcast, 3Dgames, mp3 player with removable memory card, pix and flix, buttons easy to press, BEAUTIFUL screen! (all 260,000 colors) great displays. and yes, the speaker could definitly be louder.
if i didn't have this phone i think iwould go for the v710...

anyone know the storage capacity in mb that the phone has in itself without a mini sd card? I had another problem yesterday. I have about 10 flix saved and when i went to open the camera, it froze on the please wait screen. I had to remove the battery to restart the phone. Tried the camera and same thing happened. I had to delete some pics and flix, i guess i had to much memmory used. So does anyone know what the limit is? It must not be a lot...3 or 4 mb probably.

hey... wooooo i live this phone and havent encountered non of those problems other than the fact that the speaker phone is quite low but i barely use it so yea... but the phones capacity is 60mb i believe without the card and you can email ringtones to yourself (Ihave about 40 of my favorite ringtones)!!! there are so many things you can do on this phone and with this phone....dont give it up or away....its great once u get it.... and my phone doenst make any noices at all like urs....it works great and charges in no time maybe u just need to trade it for another 8940 and all the drama will stop.... i have none of that problem with my phone!..... i'll be around so write me if u need me and check out my birthday forum..hehe

Im having almost all of the same problems. The first one I noticed was the ticking noise, I kinda got over it. The "extended network" problem is the worst problem and getting worse by the day, mine was locked on it from around 10pm until I thought it was strange that my phone hasnt rang, and it was 4 pm the next day!!! I missed some VERY important calls because of that crap!!! (by the way, when I called VZW CS they said it was MY fault for buying an all digital phone in an area with "spotty" digital service!! WTF i live in the F-in BAY AREA if we have spotty service how do people in rual area's even get a signal at all!!!)
The battery life in my case has just recently become an issue. At first the battery life was decent, full charge = 2-4 days of usage. NOW.....I can barely go a whole day without my phone dying on me! This is my charging schedule: plug in at night around 10pm, take off charger in the moring at 7am, if lucky I will make it home with out the phone dying to be put back on the charger again. Lastly, the beeping, ringing and various annoying random sounds the phone makes when not wanted/needed can all be turned off in the settings, just play around with 'em.
