So in the fall, IF I get a room that is shared with someone who pays for high speed internet, I may just go ahead and sign up for Vonage....why vonage over CallVantage? Well, simple...it's cheaper, no contract, and if I am not mistaken, no sales tax (please correct me if I am wrong....I do NOT live in NJ, btw). It is only $24+ a month which is excellent for what you get....but my thing is, I will also have a cell phone (Verizon). The cheapest plan, of course! My best friend will have VZ too so I will not waste minutes with him. None of my family has VZ though, so I can call them on my Vonage phone. Also, I can make local calls without using peak minutes, of which I would only have 450. I will likely have a multimedia add-on...the $5 pix/txt/flix package....so that makes my bill about $45/mo for wireless + taxes and fees which will give me about a $55-6 bill....+ $24/mon for Vonage + $450/mo for rent (incl utilities if I get one of the places I am looking at now) and then of course, living expenses.

D you think getting Vonage is a waste of money? i would only get it so I could call long distance and locally as much as I want without wasting minutes and plus have the backup security of a "landline" phone. What do you think? Btw, I would be paying for all of this with left over student loans/grants and possibly a part-time job....all while juggling 18 credits at school.....I also may want to go to another state for research or to Canada for a vocation and if I would be able to bring my laptop with me to a place with the net, I can call back home and they can call me without fees!

Anyway, one last Q....for those with Vonage, do you JUST pay the $24//mo or does your bill end up much more than that with state and locat fees and taxes??? if so, much much does your bill total.....particularly for those with a PA number.

Personally, I would just add more minutes to my cell plan and then conserve them by calling home after 9:00pm or on weekends. With Verizon you can go to 900 for an extra 20 bucks. VOIP service needs bandwidth which you won't have much of if someone else is surfing the net while you are trying to make a call. I have an experimental VOIP account now and it just doesn't work as well as I had hoped. Sometimes it sounds great and sometimes calls break up worse than my cell ever does. If you do go the VOIP route, check out Voicepulse, Packet8, and Broadvoice as well as the two biggies you mentioned.

it's hard for us to tell you if it's going to be wort hit for you to have Vonage or not.. it depends how many calls you are making, and if they're incomming or outgoing.. and to where they are going to, or comming from..

Vonage can work to a major advantage, cuz you can get your number form anywhere they have service, so you may be able to get a number locally to your friends/family back home, and they can then call you whenever they like.. you could maybe get away with teh $15/mo 500 min package form Vonage, as all incomming calls are free, then you'd stilll have the 500 mins for outgoing, plus your cell, that shoudl be alot of minutes, and since you're in school and at work, you wont' be able to talk that many mins away..

as for taxes I don't think that vonage in the US is taxed, we here in Canada are taxed both Provincial and Federal taxes but I think in the US it's tax-free, but you may want to check here http://www.vonage-forum.com/forums.html they have lots of Vonage info

I sent an email to Vonage and they responded promptly with specifc and with detailed answers to my questions. I will just post their response here:

Quote:
Dear Sir/Madam:

Thank you for your interest in Vonage.

Your computer does not need to be turned on for you to make and receive calls because your Vonage phone service works independently from your computer. You may not even need a computer to use our service. We do require a high-speed Internet connection such as DSL or Cable Internet.
With a DSL connection and with some Cable Internet connection, you would need a computer to setup your connection. Along with that, it is not necessary that your Vonage and internet provider's account should be under your name.

If you decide to subscribe to our service, we provide you with a digital phone adapter. This is the device that allows you to make phone calls over the internet. The digital phone adapter connects to your high-speed modem, and your telephones connect to the adapter. You then use your phones as you would normally to make and receive calls. Each adapter supports up to 2 phone lines, or a phone and a fax line. You have the option of using your existing telephone wirings or can use any of the following options:

You can purchase a multiple jack extension connector, and then connect it to a phone port of the phone adapter. This will allow you to have multiple phones on a single Vonage line.

Some of our customers use cordless phone systems that come with a base unit and extra handsets. The base station of the cordless telephone plugs directly into the phone adapter. Multiple handsets can be placed anywhere in the house.

You can purchase wireless phone jacks. The base unit connects to the phone adapter and the wireless jacks plug into your household electrical outlets. A telephone connects to the wireless jack. Please note that only the phone attached to the base unit will display caller id information. Also, during testing in our lab, we noticed sporadic dropped calls on the extension phones and an inability to talk on more than one phone at a time.

Some of our customers have plugged the phone adapter directly into the existing telephone wiring in their homes. The manufacturer of the adapter does not recommend hooking anything to the adaptor other than a telephone, but you can seek advice from an electrician or someone who is familiar with internal telephone wiring on how to best connect it to your current wiring to take advantage of multiple extensions. We would advice that you pre-check the wiring on the jacks to make sure you don't have live PSTN voltage on the jacks before connecting them to the phone adapter (this can be easily done by using a line tester such as those that are available at Radio shack). Be advised that any damage resulting from practices contrary to manufacturers recommendations for the phone adapter will not be covered by warranty.

With regards to the phone adapter we are sending, it is the Linksys Phone Adapter which has 2 phone ports, so you can connect two phone lines or one phone line with a dedicated fax line. It also comes with a built in 3-port router so you can connect multiple PCs, wireless routers, or gaming systems. For example, you could connect your computer, wireless router, and Xbox Live on the same device. And because it has an internal router, you can talk on the phone and surf the web at the same time! (Depending on your home network setup, this may require additional equipment.)

Vonage is not like the traditional phone companies who charge tremendous amount of taxes. But we do apply additional taxes. Below are the monthly charges for the $24.99 Residential Unlimited Plan.

Monthly charges:

Monthly Service Charge $24.99
Federal Excise Tax $0.75
Regulatory Recovery Fee $1.50
-----------------------------------------
Total $27.24

All prices are listed in US dollars and are subject to change without notice. Paid Features, additional lines, International calls, Directory Assistance, and any overage charges are additional.

And when we say we redefine technology, that includes providing dedicated phone numbers outside of your area code or country for just
$4.99 per month. You can add as many Virtual numbers as you want with an area code of your choice provided it is available.

Please let us know if we may be of any further assistance.

Sincerely,

Sarah
