Treo 650 - Cingular Branded Firmware Updating ...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: rajs

Hello -- Can one take Cingular Treo650 running v1.04 of the Firmware and upgrade it to v1.23 ... if so ... is it possible to revert back to the original v1.04 someway -- I assume via having a backup copy prior to upgrading of the FW ? Also if this is possible what tool / tools would be needed.

Thank you very much for any assistance.

Regards,

- rajs

just upgraded to firmware 1.23, no flaws. Gained about 5.3 MB. I have a LOcked Cingular branded 650. All you need is an empty memory card (preferibly) and a card reader (or card export).

On a side note, my Backup Man didnt restore properly, neither is hotsync...so im still investigating, ill post with updates

Posted by: Achap

ok, sync ok, just soft resetted in the middle of it...seems stable now

No resets, voice volume is noticably louder, i was previously on version 1.04

Posted by: KalJer

So can you revert back to 1.04 or in my case 1.02?

Posted by: dapastaguy

Where do I get the firmware update from? I am running version 01.05.

Posted by: Achap

you can get the firmware here.

Achap,
After upgrading to 1.23, is your Treo still locked to Cingular ?
(I thought that 1.23 for a ROW firmware).

Oooh, and how is the volume level during calls after 1.23 ?

Thanks !!

Thanks for pointing me there

So to do this update I have to have a SD card and reader? Or is that just recommended?

Not sure, Thats what I would recommend. I have however heard of a hotsync update, but I have also heard that that method fails..failsafe is the SD card...you would need about 15-20 MB free memory, although an empty SD is also recommended

I would also like to know if you can revert, possibly by downloading an official previous firmware updater from PalmOne/Cingular.

yes, i went from a 1.15 version firmware upgraded to 1.23, then back to a 1.15

Hi -- I called Cingular and had them unlock my Treo 650 which I had for under 1 week. No probs. I was running 1.04 FW on it.

I then went to PalmOne and downloaded 1.05 FW for Cingular (The one that supposedly fixes the VM issue). Updated to that ... no issues. Also now I have a copy of the 1.05 Cingular FW on disk.

I then tried out another SIM from a buddy on T-Mobile -- no issues .. I could make calls etc.

I then updated my FW to 1.23 and my device works fine ... and is totally unbranded now. I assume I can easily revert back to 1.05 FW that is Cingular branded by updating the phone again if I ever needed to.

Next step is a custom ROM based off of the 1.23 FW.

So far so good. 1.23 FW is alot more stable for me as compared to 1.04 or 1.05.

Best of luck everyone.

Where is the 1.05 update. The only update I see is the Treo 650 Voicemail Updater 1.04.

Did you do the update with a SD card and reader or hotsync?

I got my phone unbranded with 1.23. It has been working quite well. My device was originally BLUE version. I got it unlocked with code from Cingular after I had done the firmware upgrade. I loaded the software onto media card. Firmware update at home is so easy

Now anyway to use personal midi as ringtone instead of preloaded ones? Have not figured it out yet.

My Treo 650 just arrived today.

For MIDI tones I use blazed and go to my domain I have with the files and download them and store them that way.

Here are a few I have.
http://treo.x2-hosting.com/midi

For MP3 tones I keep them on the SD card and use Ringo for custom MP3 tones and PhotoID. I use a card reader for transferring them.

There is also MIDI files at www.treobits.com. Use Blazer to browse and the installation is automatic

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98; PalmSource/hspr-H102; Blazer/4.0) 16;320x320)

The homepage in Blazer for Cingular does not work. I would like to browse the settings I have under MyWirelessWindow.

I got my t650 from Cingular the first week they came out so I think it had v1.02. I tried upgrading the v1.23 and still had stability problems so I downgraded to 1.15. It's still fairly unstable or at least I don't seem to be having the type of luck a lot of other posters are having.

One odd thing is that whenever I turn th ephone on or off, I get a Sprint Splash screen. Is this just by default or is there something wrong? It has no problem woring on Cingular's n/w.

Thanks

My problem with Cingular MEdia Net not loading was solved by enabling Proxy this setting is enabled on the ORANGE Treo 650 but not the BLUE one.

Where is the best source to download Treo software?

Also I find the midi do not sound as good on the TREO it sounds like it lacks instruments.

If you put the 1.23 firmware on a Cingular branded 650, will you lose ENS support?

ENS support is pretty important until Cingular intergrates all the towers, and I would hate to lose that.

Posted by: dapastaguy

It took me 3 weeks to get up the courage to try but since most of the reports were good I took the plunge. It went perfectly. The only small issue is that quick tour took over the favorites button on the phone dialer that was originally the camera. I have no plans to use the camera, especially from the phone dialer, but I also have no need for quick tour. Oh well, cest la vie....

No problems restoring old info from the backup. I was going to hot sync but my son said to restore. All my hot syncs have been fine, and I did ditch Express Mail.

I also want to upgrade my current 1.05 firmware but I'm very skeptical of messing something up or having any problems at all.

I must say that my 1.05 hasnt had any issues at all but if the 1.23 firmware is better....................... well, I just dont know what I should do.

There was an issue early on with a 64k GEMPLUS SIM card that jacked up the voicemail number...the VM upgrade (v1.04 i believe) fixed that...

yeah I read about that. jacked up the sim card? what exactly did it do. I have had Cingular for 2 months and I still dont have a working voicemail. I just assumed it was setup wiht the default msg as i switch phones a lot and hadn't had a chance to set it up.

Then I realize its not set up at all and ppl can't even leave a msg. I think it used to be who knows what happened. I call them adn they say there is a problem with the system and my account but they were fixing it but then it would take 24hrs. I still have no voicemail.

Bad mark against cingular and they aren't even crediting me anythign for it.

Posted by: shawncv79

I can see why they won't credit yoy...the voicemail feature doesn't cost you anything as a subscriber...

as for the voicemail issue, download the voicemail dialer issue patch on palmone's website. I'd link it but I'm wi-posting. if someone can provide a link that would be splendid.

I realize that the Cingular SIM cards disable manual network select. I do know though that the phone can bypass this SIM block when the software of the phone allows it. For example, my old Motorola v600 was seem-edited to allow the manual network select, therefore bypassing the SIM's restriction. So if the phones software can be used as a loophole around this, I was wondering if the unbranded firmwares of 1.21 or 1.23 enabled this option and bypass the cingular SIM's restriction.

can anyone with 1.21 or 1.23 and a cingular sim test to see if you indeed have the ability to manually select a network via Options >> Select Network?

I am assuming that these FW updates will also work with a Treo 650 locked to ATT?

Better luck with that FW?

Posted by: homegeek

I have a Cingular 650 running FW 1.05. I am still wondering if anyone knows about ENS support for the unlocked firmware. I was also wondering where these FW updates are from. Palmone only seems to have 1.15 for unlocked GSM on the site?

Is this just a firmware update to 1.15? or are there software updates too. Am I better of sticking with Firmware: 1.21 which I have. I think I tried some other firmwares even newer then 1.21 but read a few ppl say that speakerphone was louder with 1.21 which was one of the most important things to me so I tried a few for myself and ended up with 1.21 though I didn't remember noticing a significant amount of difference in speaker volume on any but I guess 1.21 was better.

Also, I have Software: Treo650-1.06/5050/0'

is that still the original. Is there a way i can just the software updates from this official update but not go down to firmware 1.15 which I'm assuming wont be as good as 1.21 that I have.

What is the newest unofficial? still 1.28?
Maybe I can get the official update which will put firmware to 1.15 and give me the software updates at same time then i can just put 1.28 or newer firmware back on and it will retain all the official software updates listed above?
