I recently purchased a kx444 on ebay, after activating it i wasn't unable to use the ptt function. I called verizon technical support, after 2 hours of trying to reprogram it...nothing, i'm not getting the inverted 1x. If anyone has any ideas besides the obvious..that i'm screwed, I would appreciate it.
I know these tech support guys are justing reading off a check list, so someone on here might have a little bit more knowledge.

Have you double checked the PTT setting? Go to MENU-SETTINGS-PTT-Make Sure PTT ENABLED is checked.

Hopefully That helps. The 444 hasn't been out that long it would be covered under manufacturers warranty. I dont believe you have to be the Original purchaser.
