S66 Owners: Would you buy it again?

Hey all....

Due to the impending change of the Cingular rate plans, I am planning on getting a new phone before 31-May, so that I can still get the Nation 29.99 plan. I've been looking at either the Siemens S66 or the Audiovox 5600.

The 5600 is a great phone, but it's a bit more than I wanted to spend, and I'm not crazy about spending $200 on a phone that is already obsolete (due to WM5, etc...).

So, I'm back to the S66. Seems like a steal for $75 (w/ my FAN discount). The only thing that makes me hesitate is that the latest firmware is (I think) v34, which seems to suffer a bit from lock-ups, etc.. I'm not comfortable flashing it to the S65 firmware (v43...and I think v50 is out now too).

So, that said, would you recommend the S66--even with v34 firmware? I plan on keeping it for about a year, then upgrading to a WM5 device.

Thanks for your opinions!

Firmware 34 really sucks. I use FW 43 and it's much better. Not to mention all the patches that are available for it, so you can really mod it and customize it like you wish. I haven't tried the FW 50 yet, but I hear there's almost no changes compared to 43.

I don't know why you are afraid of flashing the new firmware, but even with the sh*tty FW34 I would probably buy this phone again if the price was good. It's a very nice phone, go for it!

I just got this phone for my gf, and will have to return it because it doesn't have 1 touch dialing. Having 1 touch to the menu features is such a dumb feature. Can this be changed with a firmware update or these patches you mentioned?

What makes FW 43 better than 34? I have 34 on the phone now, and I'm pissed now, because it should have come with the lastest.

with the new firmware can you assign mp3's to things such as text messages? seems it wont let me use anything other than a wav and something else.. How about the alarm... I have browsed though the manual and cannot find how to set tones for that either! I need something loud for txt messages and alarms..

You can set your own alarm sound in firmware 43. Unfortunately the phone does not support and probably never will support mp3 files. But you can always use IMA ADPCM wav files for your specific tunes. I know, the sound quality is a lot worse than mp3, but it's better than nothing.
The x75 series of Siemens phones will support mp3 though.

thats kinda weird because I can play mp3 on mine. it seems that it would only take a little more code to make it work for ring tones.
Did you mean that they just dont and probably wont support mp3 for ring tones?

I did not look at the model of the phone very well for this topic. I thought it was for the SX66..
Sorry about the confusion...
