Wrong USB Cable - VX6000?

I bought a straight USB cable (one that doesn't have a converter in the middle) for my VX6000 off the internet.

When I load BitPim, it won't communicate with my phone and tells me that the most probable reason is that I'm using this "straight cable" and that I should use the other type of cable instead (one with a converter).

So, is that truly my problem or is this a bogus error message that really points to something else?
