SE47 Slider showing strange image on startup

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: bleek520

When I turn my slider on, the rotating hourglass appears, then, as it's starting to display my wallpaper, a fullscreen picture of a computer and a cell phone with a double sided arrow in between them appears. All I can do after that is turn it off. I couldn't find any help on this anywhere else, but I'm assuming it can be fixed. I have a data cable and bitpim, so if anyone knows how to fix it, please help.

Yeah, my brother and I both have se47's and his phone started to do the same exact thing just a few days ago (that's why I'm scanning the forum). I haven't had much time to play around with it, but I also have a data cable, bitpim, and Kyocera's PST. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Is it slider RIP day?????

My primary board for my slider keeps freezing and my backup one is doing taht weird computer arrow thing. It basically means that the software is shot. Try searching and somewhere on the forum there is a site where you can get the software.....I beleive pollaris911 has a link to it for it was in one of his threads

Can somebody PLEASE make an image file with the PST of a working slider preferably a VM slider that's been changed to verizon. But any type would be helpful. On the other, if anyone knows where i could find an image of the original firmware that would be splendid.

Are you wanting to do the process I posted before?

Posted by: bleek520

yeah pretty much...but i guess i need the original image of the phone.

Posted by: bleek520

i did some semi-random stuff to my phone with the PST (executed a reset script), messed with the qcn file...restored it to the default PST qcn, and then changed it back to the original qcn i made when the phone crashed. i restarted the phone, it actually booted up, then i got a weird message and it wouldnt do anything. i kept on restarting the phone, and it would keep on going to that same error screen. well i messed around with the phone some more...and actually got it to start up and not crash. but when i make a call, i get a verizon msg saying the ESN is not valid. so thats pretty much where i'm at right now. not sure what to do and worried it might permanetly crash sometime soon.

oh yeah, don't ask me why i did that random stuff, all i know is that i got my phone partially working now.

Edit: turns out that PST and bitpim will not recognize my phone anymore. any suggestions?

the "Phone Configuration Transfer" can not save a copy of the settings. It basically just Transfers the GOOD seettings from a WORKING slider to a Slider in D/L Mode, and it showuld get it out of D/L Mode.

Would you be willing to part with your phone for a short time, And I can see if I can get it working for you. We can talk over the phone first if u want. I can PM you with my number and stuff if your willing to help me test this all out.. I mean what have ya got to loose.

Posted by: bleek520

so now im back to getting the error message:
"fsd_intel_nr
01279"

DeadEnd2005: im going to see if i can send it in to kyocera or take it back to the store i bought it from...but i doubt that'll work. so if all else fails, ill consider sending you the phone. I'll get back to you.

Edit: I just plugged the charger into the phone while it was off, and got a new message reading:

"dog.c
00637"

wonder whats next.

Hey I have a VM Slider and I just loaded the Verizon PRL. I'm going to make a copy of the ENTIRE 12MB phone software. I will also send along with it a program that will let you RE-WRITE you ESN back into the phone. So just hold off on sending it to kyocera.. I want to see if this all works. ok. PM me with your email address and I will email it to you tommorrow.

After typing all of the below, I'm not gonna delete it before I even post, but I think the fix is found in this thread:

For all of these to do the EXACT same thing on the EXACT same day is VERY weird.

I haven't had a slider for a few months, but I'm just wondering if it's like.... some massive mandated firmware update? Like the picture on your phone means it's being updated over the air? Has anyone started their phone, seen that pic, and then let their phone sit for like 5 minutes, and just left it there while they brushed their teeth or checked their email or something?? Or do you just shut it right back off and fiddle with it?

I'd try leaving it for five minutes somewhere where you usually have a good signal, and just see what happens.

I don't think it would have anything to do with W97M.Dog.C... that was an old Windows worm!

*searching*

okay, here's what I've come up with:
The DOG.C error message can occur sometimes because you've loaded TOO MUCH onto the phone. Try manually deleting somethings, especially graphics (wallpapers) if you can still get into the phone's filesystem via datacable.

Other reports indicate that it is a HARDWARE WATCHDOG error message, indicating something may be wrong with the hardware itself (again, possibly due to too much data).

sorry to burst everyone's bubble but this has been covered to a large extent. the slider has a very sensative software prgrammed into it. it's pretty infamous for crashing. this happens usually from overloading the phone with data/ringtones/etc. it can also happen from dropping to phone or any internal damage such as a break in a connection. occasionally I do see an occasional post about how it just randomly stopped working. it happens. basically as far as I know, there isn't any way to save your phone. the reset stuff that bleek520 posted seems to be the closest. so far I've seen that flashing it doesn't work, KWPST has yet to make a clean fix(I'm referring to bleek520's attempt). the best way for you to get your phone fixed is to take it into your provider. beg and plead and ask them to replace it. I had 2 of my fried phones replaced by verizon without warrenty or insurance on the phones. it's a common enough problem that they might help you out. if they don't, contact kyocera, and if that doesn't work, guess like kealvan said...you're SOL.

Well guess what koreanguy, I have SEEN the "Phone configuration Transfer" on KWPST fix phones in D/L mode...

Ok, so I stayed up until 6 am this morning working on my phone, and got it working again. Here are the steps to what I did:

1. Download needed software: Kyocera PST found here , SE47.exe (esn changer, read/write flash; YOU NEED TO REGISTER AN ACCOUNT WITH THAT SITE, IT'S FREE) found here , A working SE47 image file (Verizon Firmware 1021) found here

2. You need a data cable for your phone with working drivers. I used a USB-to-Serial cable purchased for $10 on ebay.

3. After installing the PST software, make sure your phone is connected to the data cable and turned on. Open PST, and click on the "Ports" tab. There are only two default ports listed, COM1 and COM2. You will need to know what port your phone is connected to...if it's the USB port connected to the mainboard, it's usually COM3 or COM4. So now click "Add New Port" and type in which port it's plugged up to. Next click "Start Clients" and choose "Service Programming". Once you're there, if the program reads your phone, a box will appear listing your phone. I should already be selected. Hit "OK". Next click the button labeled "Read". It will prompt you for the phones SPC Code, this is usually "000000". If that doesn't work, I leave it up to you to search the forums for your phone's SPC. After it reads the data from your phone, click "Save" and save the file somewhere where you can find later. Close the PST.

4. Here it can get a little tricky. If your phone is not connected to COM1 or COM2 you need to assign it to COM1. You can do this via the device manager in windows (by the way, I'm using Windows XP Pro). If COM1 is currently being used by something else (which is most likely), reassign the port to an unused port. Now you can assign your data cable to COM1. The reason this need be is because the guy who coded the program "se47.exe" got lazy and decided to only use COM1 and COM2. Now open the se47.exe. Make sure your phone is connected and on. Uncheck the box that says "Clear SPC, FSC, Lock on Read". Click connect. If it says it cannot open COM1, you either didn't do the COM port reassigning, or it's being buggy like my system was doing. I unplugged the cable from the computer and plugged it back in. That did the trick for me. So as it's connecting to the phone, you should see the Baud Rate changing. Finally it should connect. If not, try restarting your phone, but not when it's trying to connect, or you can try checking the box "Work in Emergency Mode" if that doesn't work. After you've successfully connected to the phone, it will display the ESN along with the phone's number and a false SPC. Write down the ESN.

4. Next you want to backup the phone's flash just in case something goes terribly wrong throughout this process. This isn't needed but if you're paranoid enough to wait 10-15 minutes to copy your phones flash to your hard drive, click "Read Flash". Save it somewhere you won't forget.

5. Here's the very crucial part. MAKE SURE YOUR PHONE IS CHARGED BEFORE YOU DO THIS! With the se47.exe program still open, click "Write Flash", and choose the image file I linked earlier in this post: "NS1021flash_noesn-1.bin". Hit "OK", and start praying everything goes smoothly. This process takes quite a while so be patient. It took me around 30-45 minutes. If the program gives you an error right after you tried to start it, try checking the box "Work in Emergency Mode" and do the "Write Flash" again. During the process, if the phone screen goes blank, and/or the progress bar stops, DO NOT UNPLUG THE PHONE AND DO NOT FORCE THE PROGRAM TO QUIT, DOING SO COULD PERMANETLY DAMAGE YOUR PHONE, JUST WAIT IT OUT. After it's finished, you should have a brand new phone again.

6. Now open up the PST software again, and go into the "Service Programming" application. Click "Read", the SPC should be "000000" again. Click on the "NAM 1" tab and for "Directory Number", put you phone number in (with the area code, no dashes or spaces). Click "Write Changes". During this process your phone will restart. Don't be alarmed. Next you need to click "Load", and find the file you saved earlier with the PST. It should have the extension ".qcn". After the file is loaded, click the "Contacts" tab (you may need to make the window fullscreen to access it). You should see all of your old contacts. Next, click "Add Entry", leave everything blank, and hit ok. Now click "Write Changes". The blank entry is added because it makes the only thing you change the phone book, and when you "Write Changes", it only copies the phone book. Clever, huh?

7. Now you need to restore your old ESN. Close out the PST, and open se47.exe again. Hit "Connect". After it connects, it will say the current ESN is "FFFFFFFF". Change "FFFFFFFF" to the ESN you wrote down earlier. If you didn't write it down, you can find out what it is by looking at the back of the phone under the battery. It will be an eight character number preceded by "H:". Click "Write ESN". This only worked when I left the box "Clear SPC, FSC, Lock on Read" checked. Hopefully it'll be changed now. You can double check by entering "111111" into the phone and hit ok, then hit ok again, scroll down, and under "ESN Hex" it should say "0x########" where "########" is the original ESN. If that is all correct, and this whole process went smoothly, you're ready to activate service on it. If you get errors and the ESN won't change, try opening the Service Programming tool in the PST, click the "General" tab, and change the value of "SPC" to your area code and first three digits of your phone number. Write changes and close the PST. Go back to the se47.exe program, and repeat the process discussed earlier in this step, but uncheck the "Clear SPC, FSC, Lock on Read" box. This should work.

8. To activate the service, dial *228 and call. When you get the option, choose "1". The phone should be back to normal and ready to use after the activation is complete.
(NOTE: The *228 did not work for me, it said I should contact Customer Service. So I went to the Verizon Store, explained to the Service Tech what all I did, they had the phone working in three minutes. The reason I posted that is because it has worked for other people.)

Special thanks to Neophaze, who provided the image file, and thanks to everyone on the HUGE "Found Flashing Software for Slider" thread who had productive comments and questions. I hope this helps. I spent eight and a half hours working on this fix and I'm glad to share this tutorial. Good luck everyone.

Disclaimer: If you choose to do this to your phone, it's YOUR decision. Don't blame me. All I know is that I had a lot of problems fixing my phone, and the tutorial I posted is, in my opinion, the best way to go about fixing a crashed SE47 cell phone without too many problems. If you do this, and get stuck somewhere, feel free to PM me with any questions. Yeah Kealvan and thatkoreanguy, I really was SOL wasn't I?

Posted by: DeadEnd2005

No thanks to me?? That pretty much what what I emailed you.

Posted by: bleek520

haha sorry man...i didn't check my email until after i posted that...but for the record, thanks to DeadEnd2005 for his late, but accurate solution.

I think the data mode lock is different from the FS_Dir problem. I gues the phone is flashable when stuck in data transfer mode. does anyone know if this works when the phone is stuck in FS_Dir lock? I think people tried it with the FS_dir problem and it didn't work. but good job getting your phone fixed. I'm personally lucky my provider is willing to replace the phone every time.

yeah, btw...if you had verizon, why didn't you take it in to them? I mean it was fixed in the end, but verizon replaced 2 of my previously fried phones even though they I didn't have insurance or warrenty left.

Posted by: bleek520

Actually, by the time I flashed my phone, it WAS doing the fs_dir thing. I had to use "Emergency Mode" with se47.exe in order to flash it. The reason I didn't take it in to verizon is because it was a virgin moble slider. I bought it at Target for $100 cheaper than what verizon would charge me. I took the phone to a verizon store when i first got it, and this guy programmed it for verizon service, but it still had the VM firmware. Now it's verizon firmware. But since I bought it through Target, I had no warranty except for the 1 year warranty Kyocero offers, and it's been over a year.

Posted by: Tech_Junkie

Add mine to the list. Lucally, verizon flashed it for me(i felt safer having them do it) and it now works

Posted by: thatkoreanguy

yeah, i think when it's stuck in data mode it can be saved. I thought for a while the data mode stuck thing and the FS_Dir problem were the same until I saw my screen get the data mode picture on it when I accessed my phone with KWPST. i took my phone into verizon when it got the FS_Dir problem and they tried flashing it both times I fried my phone and it didn't work. I'm sure data mode is just a glitch and a flash is good enough to reset the problem.

WEll, i guess it's just been a toughf month on me. Lots of crap happened and lots of my things were lost, broken, or stolen. Includeing my computer which is now trashed so i am stuck useing my dads fancy Hewlett Packard. I do have an old Compaq Contura 420CX, but that thing is a freaken dinosaur. Also, my brother left his gameboy on the seat of my car, and the window was open, and someone stole it out of my car. THEN my cell phone broke....and then the replacement phone had the COmputer thing, but they were able to fix it. And guess what now, i was talkin to verizon to get credits from my GIN downloads, and my phone froze. I have so much more to say about my crap month, but running late to go somewhere.....

Check this thread. I got my Slider out of DL mode this way.
http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...183#post6021183

On my phone I had to enter the 111111 OK when the hourglass was rotating. I had to enter the security code and OK immediately when it stopped rotating.

I did that a few times but it kept going back to DL mode. I finally tried changing settings in different places then changing them back and left the phone in that service mode for most of the day. When I shut it down it restarted and was working again. That was 5 days ago so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Posted by: bleek520

So it's been almost a year since that crazy slider crash, and all I have to say is, don't get PISS drunk and urinate on your SE47 like I did to mine. Re-flashing will not fix it. Thanks a bunch and goodnight.

Hi, I can't seem to find the esn changer, it says it is an invalid link or something.

Please, what is the correct link?

Posted by: DeadEnd2005

I just recently downloaded a program from Kyocera that was actually made to fix the D/L Mode problem.. Haven't got to try it out. Supposedly according to some Kyocera Documentation I read The image of the phone & a computer with the arrow between them is actually a memory problem. and "Service Required" is something PHYSICALLY wrong with the phone.

Some people have said that reflowing the MSM chip corrects the D/L Mode, but that is if it is doing the "Service Required" as well. I have seen some phone that come up in d/l mode first, then when you turn it off and back on, does "Service Required".

I will probably be selling that program I found, but I'm not going to advertise it on here, cuz I will get banned.
